‘State must enforce mandatory thalassemia testing for grooms'
KARACHI: Founder and Chairman of Saylani Welfare, Maulana Muhammad Bashir Farooq Qadri, announced that 92 children undergoing treatment at the Saylani Blood Bank and Thalassemia Centre have been successfully rehabilitated. These children no longer require blood transfusions and can now lead normal lives like other children, dream of a brighter future, and look forward to milestones such as marriage. Currently, 300 more children are receiving treatment at the centre.
Addressing a seminar held to mark World Thalassemia Day, Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority Secretary Dr Darnaz Jamal emphasized the need for collective efforts to combat thalassemia.
The seminar also featured speeches by prominent figures, including Hamdard University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Shabib Hassan, Director of Clinical Science Division Hamdard Laboratories Prof Dr Hakeem Abdul Hannan, Prof Dr Faisal Haider, Dr Tabiba Saima Ghayas, Dr Azra Rafiq, Dr Zaneer, Dr Abdul Qadeer, Director of Saylani Blood Bank Center Iqbal Qasmani, Dr Sarwar, Dr Younus Jamal, and others.
Maulana Muhammad Bashir Farooq Qadri urged the state to strictly enforce the law mandating premarital blood tests for thalassemia minor for grooms. He cited the successful implementation of this law in Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom, which have achieved thalassemia-free status.
Dr Darnaz Jamal lauded Saylani's efforts in combating thalassemia and called for research into possible treatments using Unani medicine. She suggested that if marriage registrars were to refuse to solemnize marriages without thalassemia-free blood test reports for grooms, and if banquet halls and catering services declined bookings without such reports, controlling the disease would become much easier. This is crucial because when both the bride and groom are thalassemia minor carriers, their children are at high risk of being born with thalassemia major.
She also expressed concern over the lack of awareness, highlighting instances where families have multiple children suffering from this condition. Dr Jamal stressed that the goal is not to impose undue restrictions on marriages but to prevent the annual addition of 10,000 thalassemia-affected children.

Blood banks must have all blood groups
Specialised Healthcare Secretary Najam Ahmad Shah directed the authorities concerned that registration of public blood banks should be completed in seven days. PHOTO: AFP The Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority (SBTA) has declared that all blood banks in the province have been asked to ensure availability of all blood groups in case any need arises. All district health officers have been instructed to assess the availability of blood and related products at blood banks, ensure compliance with SOPs, and provide an inventory report to the SBTA. The Secretary of the SBTA, Dr Dur Naz Jamal, stated that they have always ensured the availability of blood during natural disasters, the COVID-19 pandemic, and processions. She stated, "My focal points are active throughout Sindh and are collecting inventory data from blood banks. We will have a complete record within a few days."

Illegal blood bank in Saddar area sealed
KARACHI: The Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority has sealed the Day and Night Thalassemia Haemophilia Care Centre in Saddar area for its involvement in illegal activities. The centre was providing blood to patients without legal permission, putting the lives of citizens at risk. Fake donor identification numbers were being used on blood bags with fake signatures from a foreign institution. The centre's temporary permit had expired in 2022. Blood was being provided to various hospitals, the screening of which was unsafe. A hospital had complained that the centre was involved in forgery of records and misuse of ISBT codes. The SBTA took action on complaints from other institutions, including Indus Hospital. A case was registered on the complaint of SBTA Secretary Dr. Durenaz Jamal. The illegal blood bank also had a guest house, while a cancer patient was given unsafe blood, which is tantamount to putting her life in danger. The centre employee also tried to threaten SBTA employees during the operation. According to Dr Durenaz, there is a risk of spreading diseases like Hepatitis B, C, HIV, malaria and syphilis through unsafe blood screening.
