Balenciaga and orthopaedic brand Scholl team up for ‘Frankenshoe' hybrid

The Guardian11-04-2025

With Birkenstocks and Crocs now ubiquitous, fashion's so-called ugly shoe trend was in danger of losing its shock factor. So the arrival of Balenciaga's collaboration with the orthopaedic brand Scholl couldn't have come a moment too soon.
The collection, which launched this week, includes a 'Frankenshoe' style that combines the buckle and front strap found on the classic Pescura Scholl sandal with a cork sole and a spindly high heel. It is priced at £625.
The collection also includes a £525 white clog mule, which resembles the Scholl designs often worn by nurses and cleaners, and a pool slider with logo for £315.
Balenciaga's collaboration is confirmation that Scholl is the latest sensible shoe to gain its moment in the fashion spotlight. Celebrities including Lily-Rose Depp and Sarah Jessica Parker are wearing the shoes and Scholl report that sales this year are up, with those in the 29 to 45-year-old age group buying the designs with a higher price point. The Cameron – a heeled version of the Pescura – is now the most popular style, retailing at £200.
Emma Davidson, the fashion director of Dazed, has a pair of the Balenciaga heeled Scholls. She says the appeal is 'the weird contrast … an old maid type of shoe with the addition of that spindly heel'. Davidson is a fan of ugly shoes in general. 'Even though I am a bit scruffy, I always like to feel a bit glam,' she says. 'The shoes contrast with what I wear and I think it adds an edge.'
The Scholl Manufacturing Company was founded in 1906 by the American podiatrist Dr William Scholl. The current US-based company Dr Scholl's now largely sells comfort-first trainers, the brand's UK focus is on footcare products and Scholl, which sells the Pescura and collaborated with Balenciaga, is based in Italy.
The Pescura was first released in 1956 and Audrey Hepburn, Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton wore the shoes. They became popular in the 70s, when they were known as the 'exercise sandal', owing to benefits such as improving posture and muscle tone. Rebecca Shawcross, a senior curator at Northampton's Shoe Museum, remembers people wearing them because they were 'doing you some good. It's the idea that they were outdoorsy, carefree … In some respects, Scholl were quite ahead of their time.'
If the clog mule is most associated with Scholl, it has also been taken up by other brands. Ancient Greek Sandals have a version for summer, and they were on the catwalk at Miu Miu's runway show. The Balenciaga collaboration is not the first, either – the brand also worked with Ganni and the DJ and designer Honey Dijon in 2022.
Yves Guy Coulter, Scholl's chief brand officer, says the brand is taking advantage of newer footwear fashion. 'Scholl's resurgence is definitely part of a wider trend toward comfort-driven footwear. More and more people – especially younger consumers – are rejecting the idea that fashion has to come at the expense of comfort.'
However, describing the Pescura as a healthy choice is not entirely straightforward, says Dr Helen Branthwaite, the chief clinical adviser for the Royal College of Podiatry. 'The wooden sole can help but that is counterbalanced by an open slip-on design,' she says. 'This style provides no support for the foot and makes the foot work harder.'
They are, of course, preferable to long-term wear of pointed toe high heels – a shape that Shawcross says has dominated 'the last 400 or 500 years'.
The curator says Scholls may be the latest in a line of shoes that take a bit of time to become accustomed to. 'So many people now wear Crocs,' she says. 'But at one point there was a bit of: 'Oh no. Why would you wear those?''

Would you pay £575 for a Britney Spears tour T-shirt?

The Balenciaga portion of that doesn't seem to be too seismic – 4 per cent according to Kering – which is a saving grace considering what has come before; a 2023 controversy that almost destroyed the house. First of all, a campaign featuring children holding teddy bears in leather bondage gear. Weird, but not unexpected in Balenciagaland. Then the truly mind boggling follow up; a campaign featuring Isabelle Huppert and some product placed amongst some seemingly innocuous objects. Except on closer inspection – via ever-present social media sleuths – one stack of documents were Supreme Court rulings on child pornography, and another featured a diploma with a name that happens to also be that of a convicted abuser. The result was a Balenciaga bomb going off at the heart of the Kering conglomerate, with celebrity denouncements from avid fans like Kim Kardashian, who said on her Instagram stories and on Twitter that she was 'shaken' by the images, and subsequent apologies from the house. Then CEO Cédric Charbit said at the time; 'I want to personally reiterate my sincere apologies for the offence caused and take my responsibility.' The statement pointed out that a third party prop's company supplied the materials on the shoot in question. In March this year, it was announced that Demna Gvasalia would be leaving Balenciaga. His destination, however, was a curveball; Kering choppering him into Gucci, its spangly jewel in the crown, a house of hi falutin glamour and those distinctive double G branded bags. Granted, Demna knows how to create buzz with logomania – although how much design nous it takes to emblazon your brand name across everything and anything is debatable – but Gucci's signature sense of seduction, throughout all of its iterations from Tom Ford to Alessandro Michele, isn't something Demna's dark arts dabble in. His is a deliberately jarring, quirky-ugly aesthetic that doesn't seem to tally with what Gucci stands for. Time will tell whether the house that once sold us must-have bags and defined the 1990s (and early 2020s) fashion is ready for a darkly turbulent aesthetic. Granted, Balenciaga couture can make some exceptionally beautiful clothes – as exhibited on the Cannes red carpet by Balenciaga ambassador Isabelle Huppert – but that's the rarity rather than the rule. Balenciaga is set to be taken over by Pier Paolo Piccioli, an Italian designer known for his sense of romance and feminine exuberance.

She's just like us! Makeup free Sophie Monk gets windswept as she catches a bus with her rarely-seen husband Joshua Gross in Brisbane

Sophie Monk proved she was just like the rest of us on Wednesday when she was spotted using public transport in Brisbane. The Love Island Australia host, 45, boarded a bus with her husband Joshua Gross. The reality star sipped on a hot beverage in a takeaway cup as she walked side by side with her marketing head honcho beau. Makeup free, she revealed her rosy cold cheeks as the wind blew in her face. Sophie donned some big-named labels for the outing, draping a $4,250 Balenciaga Le City bag over her shoulder and sporting a pair of white Alexander McQueen sneakers, which retail for nearly $1,000, on her feet. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. A thigh-length neutral-toned rain jacket, fitted with a cinched waist and a hood, shielded the star from the wind during her stroll. She finished off the laidback fit with skinny jeans and grey ankle socks. As for accessories, she wore dainty silver bracelets on her wrist and pearl stud earrings, before chucking on a pair of sunglasses as she hopped on the bus. Her partner also opted for an off-duty fit, wearing a black zip-up hoodie over a white T-shirt. Matching his wife in a pair of blue jeans, Joshua wore white sneakers and a white cap for the windy outing. He also carried a large black Louis Vuitton bag over his shoulder while also nursing a warm beverage in the cold weather. Joshua rocked his signature mustache and a little bit of stubble on his chin. Sophie and Joshua wed in a private ceremony at their Central Coast, NSW home in 2022. Speaking to Stellar Magazine, Sophie called the small wedding 'so beautiful and relaxed'. She added that she chose to have a wedding at home to keep things 'stress-free' while Joshua called their private home 'our sanctuary' and was glad to make wedding memories that will last a lifetime there. Another reason they chose to have a wedding on their own was because Sophie was happy to keep the guest list to a bare minimum. 'We figured, if you don't invite one person, then no-one could get upset,' she told Stellar. She designed her own dress, and gave J'Aton Couture just two weeks to create it based off her own sketches. Joshua proposed on Christmas Day the year before, but they waited until January to announce their happy news. The couple first met on a flight from Europe to Australia in August 2018 and shared a kiss after enjoying 'three champagnes' in business class.
