There is no link between the name 'Azania' and the indigenous people of South Africa
The proposal of a constitutional amendment by the African Transformation Movement (ATM) to change the name of South Africa to the 'Republic of Azania' is nonsensical, unnecessary and irrelevant to the inhabitants of this place.
We should be asking ourselves where the word 'Azania' originates from, which language and how it is related to the people of South Africa. There are no cultural, historical or linguistic connections to the name.
It was during my time as a young activist in the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) that I was firmly convinced that South Africa should be renamed Azania. I had been persuaded by the argument that 'South' was merely a geographical direction and therefore did not have substantive cultural and historical connections befitting a nation's identity.
I later realised that my comprehension of the word 'Azania' was limited to its use in Pan Africanist and Black Consciousness discourses.
The name 'Azania' has no historical or cultural connection to my people. It was never part of our vocabulary or identity. The term did not exist in our oral traditions or historical records, and my community had never encountered it before modern political movements began to invoke it.
The pre-colonial society in what is now South Africa was home to various independent kingdoms and queendoms, each governed by its rulers. I descend from the Bahurutshe, one of the largest sub-groups of the Batswana people, who previously occupied the area now known as the Marico region or Zeerust.
Our ancestors referred to their kingdom as Kaditshwene (a place of baboons) and Tshwenyane (a little baboon), an ancient twin-city settlement that thrived from 1300 to 1884. Like many other indigenous polities, it functioned as a sovereign polity, free from foreign or external domination.
There was a shift in the geopolitical landscape after the Berlin Conference of 1884, where European powers gathered to partition Africa among themselves, laying the foundation for the modern nation-states we recognise today. As a result, the various kingdoms were forced to adapt to these new political realities and form countries under Western-imposed frameworks.
A country known as the Union of South Africa was established in 1910, led and governed by white minority rule. A referendum was held in 1960, in which white South Africans decided to leave the Commonwealth, become independent and call the country the Republic of South Africa. The new republic came into being on 31 May 1961.
While the name 'South Africa' is descriptive of a geographic location, the name gives a strong cultural, political and historical connection. It reminds us of different epochs in our history and how we interacted with other countries.
The use of the word South in the name of a country is not unique to South Africa; other countries have adopted names that are geographically descriptive such as South Sudan, Central African Republic (CAR), North and South Korea, North Macedonia and East Timor.
My discomfort at the name Azania was vindicated after I came across one of the compelling writings of South African freedom fighter and journalist Paul Trewhela, who is now based in the United Kingdom. Through his sharp historical analysis, he provides a well-substantiated account of the origins of the name 'Azania', demonstrating that it was a term imposed by slave traders/masters to demean the Black Africans in some parts of East Africa.
Trewhela contends that the name Azania does not bear any link to the indigenous people of South Africa and carries connotations or implications of oppression rather than liberation. His scholarship helped clarify that the name Azania lacks authentic historical, cultural, political, or linguistic connections to South Africa and its people.
'The name 'Azania' celebrates the centuries of enslavement of black Africans by Islamist Arab imperialism down the east coast of Africa. It is a disgrace for reactionary ideologists to be using this concocted name to replace the name South Africa,' he remarked.
This name, Azania, is primarily used by people who identify themselves as revolutionaries or radicals in South Africa's academic, political and social spheres. It is used by political formations such as the PAC, the Azanian People's Organisation, the Economic Freedom Fighters, and trade unions affiliated to the National Council of Trade Union, among others.
Just as I once did in the past, many of these individuals and groups adopt the term 'Azania' as a symbolic rejection of apartheid and white supremacy. Their chief motivation emanates from a desire to eliminate any association with the apartheid regime, including the name 'South Africa', which they regard as a legacy of colonialism and racial oppression.

"We regret 22 deaths, including one police officer," Interior Minister Manuel Homem told reporters in a press conference on Wednesday. Nearly 200 people were injured in the violence, he said, and more than 1,200 people had been arrested. Shops and businesses remained closed in Luanda on Wednesday as security forces patrolled the city. The streets were largely empty as people stayed home, although there were some queues outside petrol stations and shops, AFP reporters said. Police in the southern city of Lubango confirmed separately that a police officer had shot and killed a 16-year-old on Tuesday. There had been similar protests the two previous weekends. Four people were killed on the first day of the unrest on Monday, according to police. Local media reported other victims on Tuesday. TV Nzinga showed women weeping over a body in a street in Luanda's central Cazenga area as people ran out of a supermarket carrying food and goods. The report did not say how the person was killed. In the same area, a young man was killed near a supermarket, apparently by a stray bullet, an AFP reporter said. Protests and unrest were also reported outside the capital, including in the city of Huambo, around 600 kilometres (370 miles) north of Luanda, police said. Images on social media also showed protests in the coastal city of Benguela, south of the capital. The Portuguese-speaking country of more than 36 million has a high inflation rate that neared 20 percent in June, while the unemployment rate hit almost 30 percent, according to the national statistics authority. Councillor Ross Strachan, Democratic Alliance Msunduzi Caucus Leader, said he had written to the KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) and the Water and Sanitation to demand urgent intervention as the water crisis worsens in the municipality. Strachan said residents in parts of Msunduzi endured nine days without any water supply. He was also concerned about the Msunduzi water department's 60% vacancy rate. 'For years, residents of Msunduzi have borne the brunt of a collapsing water supply system, riddled with neglect, mismanagement, and corruption. The current crisis underscores the complete breakdown of essential services,' he said. Strachan said the DA had put forward a water rescue plan which includes the immediate ring-fencing of funds for urgent infrastructure upgrades, maintenance, and water supply capacity building. Hlela said the population has grown and the dynamics of the area have changed resulting in insufficient water supply. He said pipelines have been laid and the wait was on the completion of reservoirs. 'I know it is a daunting task but people who did not have water for eight years now have water. The challenge for us is to keep it and sustain it daily,' he said. Hlela said the Northdale area, which did not have water for several days, will receive an upgraded and larger reservoir to meet demand. He warned that the municipality cannot build pipelines and reservoirs overnight and called for councillors to be patient. 'We are working on a plan to secure funding to fix ageing infrastructure in the municipality,' he said. Nelisiwe Ngcobo, acting city manager, said the water department required long term solutions and resources. On staff shortages she said they have recruited three people in the water department recently. Ngcobo said they were making every effort to address water challenges. Reinus Niemand, an African Christian Democratic Party councillor, said the municipality has allowed it under their watch through mismanagement and corruption to deteriorate to the extent that it is now a crisis. 'Areas have not received proper water reticulation for years are a fact. Water is one aspect where politics should be set aside and innovative ways found to address the situation. The administration has failed and it is time to take hands with the private sector and civil society to pave the way forward,' he said. During the council meeting the majority of councillors voted against the PPP suggestion.

'The minister and the department remain committed to ensuring every child has access to a qualified practitioner and a curriculum-rich early learning environment. Improving the quality and reach of ECD is central to ensuring children who enter Grade 1 are cognitively, emotionally and physically ready to learn, and forms the foundation of a more equitable and effective basic education system.' This year finance minister Enoch Godongwana announced an additional R10bn investment in ECD over the next three years. The funding will raise the daily subsidy from R17 to R24 per child and is expected to increase access for about 700,000 more children up to the age of four. Speaking at the Bana Pele (Children First) summit in March, President Cyril Ramaphosa reinforced government's commitment to early learning. 'As South Africans we have a clear goal for all our children, access to quality learning opportunities for an additional 1.3-million children by 2030. I think it's possible,' he said. Investment in ECD provides substantial returns, he added.. 'Studies have shown every rand spent on ECD can save up to R7 in future costs associated with remedial education, social services and criminal justice. 'ECD is critical for developing foundational skills such as language, literacy and numeracy,' he said, citing a study that estimated an investment of 2.1% of GDP in universal childcare could enable 10.5-million women to join the workforce over three years.
