Urvashi Rautela Questions National Award Jury For Ullozhukku: 'It's Not A Pension...'
At 56, Urvashi won Best Supporting Actress at the 71st National Film Awards for Ullozhukku but questioned the jury's decision, urging transparency as she played a central role.
At 56, veteran actor Urvashi clinched the Best Supporting Actress award at the 71st National Film Awards for her performance as Leelamma in Ullozhukku, directed by Christo Tomy. While the honour adds another feather to her cap, Urvashi has publicly questioned the jury's decision-making process, specifically why she was recognised as a supporting actor despite playing a central role in the film alongside Parvathy Thiruvothu.
In an interview with Manorama News, Urvashi didn't shy away from expressing her concerns. 'Is there any standard scale for acting? Or is it that after a certain age, this is all you'll get?" she asked pointedly. She went on to say, 'This is not pension money to be silently accepted. How are these decisions made? What criteria is followed?"
The actress recalled a similar experience from 2006 when she won the Best Supporting Actress award for Achuvinte Amma, a film in which she also played the lead role. 'There were politics even then," she said, noting that she has always chosen meaningful roles over lobbying.
Urvashi added that both she and Parvathy had been submitted in the Best Actress category for Ullozhukku, further questioning the jury's final verdict. 'These awards should make the recipient proud instead of being handed over with no explanation," she said.
The actor has also urged Union Minister Suresh Gopi to look into the selection process and support greater transparency, especially for Malayalam cinema.
Ullozhukku is a 2024 Malayalam drama film written and directed by Christo Tomy. Featuring powerhouse performers Urvashi and Parvathy Thiruvothu in lead roles, the film also includes Arjun Radhakrishnan, Alencier Ley Lopez, Prashanth Murali, and Jaya Kurup in pivotal supporting parts. Recognised for its compelling storytelling, Ullozhukku was officially selected for the International Competition: Fiction category at the 2nd Eikhoigi Imphal International Film Festival, held in 2025.
While Ullozhukku won Best Malayalam Film, 2018 was awarded Best Production Design and Pookkaalam bagged Best Editing at this year's National Awards. Vijayaraghavan took home Best Supporting Actor. However, notable omissions like Prithviraj Sukumaran's performance in Aadujeevitham – The Goat Life led to growing discontent. Even Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan criticised the jury's decision to honour The Kerala Story.

Vidya Balan Recalls Being Asked To Look ‘Younger' Than Shahid Kapoor In Kismat Konnection
Last Updated: Vidya Balan revealed that before she did Kismat Konnection, she received a call from someone asking her to lose weight and ensure she looked younger than Shahid Kapoor. Bollywood actress Vidya Balan recently opened up about experiencing body shaming in the film industry. While acknowledging that things have improved over the years, she recalled she was once asked to look 'younger' than her male co-star Shahid Kapoor for the 2008 film Kismat Konnection. She said that she received a call from someone who reminded her that Shahid is two years younger than her, and that she would have to lose weight to make sure she looks younger than him. While speaking with Filmfare, Vidya Balan said, 'There was this chatter that you have to look young if you want to work with some of the actors. I remember before I did Kismat Konnection, someone called me and said Shahid is two years younger than you. And you are being cast opposite him. Therefore you have to shed weight and make sure you look even younger than him. And of course the world has changed now." She further added, 'Until 2019, on every single film, I'd get a call from the producer, director. They would ask for a meeting and they would say 'Can you shed some weight?' I would be like 'Listen, I am not sitting on my haunches doing nothing. If I could, I would do it for myself, forget any film!' But those things are not nice. If you want someone with a different kind of body, go to that person. You want someone like me with my kind of person, then come to me. Because even for the most regular character, they would want me to be thinner." She further added that there was a phase when she had put on a lot of weight. 'And I was exercising like a beast. And today there is the awareness that I was actually harming myself., My body was in distress. I was so frustrated. I was barely eating. I was killing it in the gym. And I kept feeling like Oh maybe I am not pushing myself enough," said Vidya Balan. Kismat Konnection, starring Vidya Balan and Shahid Kapoor, was directed by Aziz Mirza. The film was released on July 18, 2008. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
