Perry's Phoenix fly in Aussie-strewn Hundred clash
Perry reckoned she had enjoyed having breakfast with her five fellow Aussies - two teammates and three opponents - in Birmingham on Friday morning before the great allrounder put friendship aside to play a key role in the afternoon in steering her side to victory.
Perry, who looked in sharp form after a month playing alongside her new colleagues in county fare at Hampshire, made up for a relatively pedestrian 14 off 13 balls by bowling tightly to take 1-17 off her 20-delivery allocation and captaining shrewdly to ensure her old English Ashes rival Nat Sciver-Brunt didn't steal the show.
Chasing the Phoenix's 5-148, which had also featured an encouraging Hundred debut knock of 19 from Perry's young compatriot Georgia Voll, superstar Sciver-Brunt played a landmark innings to become the first woman to reach 1000 runs in English cricket's flagship 100 ball-a-side event.
Sciver-Brunt was single-handedly threatening to win the match when Perry, who'd already squeezed the Rockets while taking 1-9 off her 10 balls in the powerplay, brought herself back into the attack for a final five-ball stint and restricted the English star to just a couple of runs.
Another Aussie Megan Schutt (0-29) then also did a good job to keep the danger woman in check before Sciver-Brunt, running out of deliveries and partners, finally got dismissed in the last five-ball set, caught superbly by Millie Taylor off Em Arlott for a 40-ball 64.
Aussie legspinner Alana King, who'd earlier bowled well for the Rockets with her 2-30 off 20 balls, including the wicket of Voll, then came to the crease, facing mission impossible, and could only garner five off the remaining balls as the Nottingham-based outfit ended on 6-137.
"All round, it's a pretty solid start," smiled Perry. "Georgia and Emma (Lamb, 55 off 32) got us off to a good start in the powerplay which was an area that let us down last year.
"And I was impressed with the way we defended the total, particularly in the field when we cut off some twos and took some really important catches.
"Nat's always a threat whenever she's at the crease, and I thought our bowlers did a job just at the right time."
But defeat was a huge let-down for Gardner, who took 1-32 off her full allocation and looked disgusted when she was dismissed for just two, smashing a half-tracker from Hannah Baker straight to square leg while in partnership with Sciver-Brunt.
The Rockets' other Aussie international Heather Graham took 1-18 off 15 balls but was dismissed for just eight off nine balls in the chase.

Snoop Dogg to Headline AFL Grand Final Pre-Game

Double Gee is heading to the G as Snoop Dogg has been announced as the pre-game performer at the AFL Grand Final, which kicks off at 2:30 p.m. on September 27th, 2025. This will be Snoop's biggest Australian show ever, performing in front of 100,000-plus fans at the MCG, Australia's largest stadium. While it's unlikely that he'll be performing with Raygun on stage, the AFL CEO, Andrew Dillon, wants to find a homegrown act to pair with Snoop. 'He's been at the Super Bowl, performed at the Olympics, but he's also very famous for his collaborations, so I think if we're looking for Australian artists, there'll certainly be one who will be featured on grand final day,' he said. Does Snoop Dogg know anything about AFL? No, but Dillon said he's a bit of a Bulldogs fan. 'I understand he follows the Western Bulldogs, so I'm not sure he's necessarily an aficionado, but he certainly knows about the game.' Snoop Dogg | Image: Supplied Katy Perry famously headlined the pre-match entertainment at last year's AFL Grand Final, much to the bemusement of AFL fans. It was such a disaster that our very own Nick Hall wrote an opinion piece, '10 AFL Grand Final Acts That Would Be Better (and Probably Cheaper) Than Katy Perry,' which included names like ONEFOUR, The Whitlams, Silverchair, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, and The Chats. Hopefully, one of these artists gets the call-up on stage with Snoop, and the natural fit would be ONEFOUR, who are performing their first Sydney Headline show on September 6th 2025. Snoop will join past performers Perry, Robbie Williams, and The Killers, and the rapper says he's honoured to be here. 'It's an absolute honour to be hitting the stage at the AFL Grand Final,' the artist said in a statement. 'It's one of the biggest events on the Aussie calendar.' 'Can't wait to bring the energy and celebrate with the fans. Let's make it unforgettable.' The federal government previously banned the rapper from entering the country on the grounds of character after he was convicted of drug and firearms offences in the U.S. However, that ban was lifted in 2008, and the rapper has performed in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide as part of his 'I WANNA THANK ME' Tour. Daniel Ricciardo: New outlook as Aussie F1 star deals with life out of the fast lane
One of Australia's most adored sporting superstars, Daniel Ricciardo, has given a candid insight into life after his inglorious sacking from the Red Bull F1 team, and his attempts to be 'better'. A new look and attitude to life has been the order for the Perth native, who lost his seat with the Visa Cash Racing Bulls team in September last year immediately following the Singapore Grand Prix. RBR powerbrokers dropped the hammer on the Aussie to make way for Kiwi youngster Liam Lawson, and the rumour mill about Ricciardo's future has been constantly bubbling along since, with Cadillac looking to announce drivers for their new Formula One team in 2026. The V8 Supercars hierarchy in Australia have also spruiked an open chequebook to lure Ricciardo if the opportunity presents. After bobbing up on social media posts around the world and fending off questions about a possible return to driving following his 14-year, eight victory career, he touched down as guest speaker at the Ray White Connect conference on the Gold Coast this week and was open in his appraisal about life out of the fast lane. 'Well, I haven't been shaving my face. The beard is my comfort right now,' the 36-year-old told Channel 7's Mel McLaughlin. 'I had a fallout with my barber and then I lost my razor. It's been a tough six months.' As most professional sports people discover once they are no longer part of the team or process, Ricciardo's new life offers more spare time and less attention, which brings both benefits and pitfalls. 'I've lived this crazy, high-speed life for so long, and I just sat into a little bit of stillness. I suddenly wasn't always surrounded by a tonne of people giving their opinions and thoughts,' Ricciardo said. 'I've had a lot of time, I've done some hiking. I was in Alaska a few weeks ago and didn't get mauled by a grizzly which was a bonus. 'I've been trying to figure out who I am other than this race car driver. 'I've come to appreciate the little things more and the meaning of the importance of family and friends. 'I've always been driven, and that sometimes leads you to being selfish, so I'm trying to learn to be a bit more selfless and become a better listener.' Offering advice for anyone aspiring to achieve at the highest level, Ricciardo gave a snapshot of his early years and the bold decisions he made as a youngster to chase his dreams. 'Childhood was great. I was always driven to do something that scared me a bit. The reason I got into racing was that no one was really doing it. It was my chance to do something a little bit cooler than everyone else,' News Corp publications reported. 'I was just showing off, but showing off has got me to a really good place in life.' Ricciardo's popularity exploded following the hugely popular Netflix series Drive To Survive, where he famously called the producers of the show a 'bunch of c...' and instantly garnered cult status with sports fans around the world. His sign off to fans after the surprise Red Bull departure signalled his appreciation of the chances he was given and the question over his world title aspirations. Wearing casual clothes and sipping a glass of whisky, Ricciardo addressed his F1 axing, saying: 'This is it'. 'I never thought I would have this career. I never thought I'd be here, you know? That's the truth,' he said. 'Yes, my dream was to be world champion, and there were years along the way where I genuinely felt like it was gonna happen. 'I got close, that's OK. If I were a world champion sitting here today, would it change how I feel or how I view myself, or anything like that? I don't think so. 'Maybe my ego would be big. We don't want that. I have no regrets.'
