The Chicago Sky have made a significant move by adding Rena Wakama to their coaching staff as an assistant coach under Head Coach Tyler Marsh. This appointment not only brings international expertise to the team but also demonstrates the Sky's commitment to incorporating diverse coaching backgrounds to enhance their performance on the court.
Rena Wakama's coaching journey is truly inspirational. In June 2023, she became the first female head coach of Nigeria's D'Tigress. Under her visionary leadership, the team achieved its fourth consecutive AfroBasket title, marking a historic milestone in her career. Her tenure reached a new peak at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she led the D'Tigress to a remarkable quarterfinal appearance—making history as the first African team to reach this stage in Olympic basketball. A standout moment of that campaign was a convincing 75-62 victory over Australia, showcasing her ability to coach teams that exceed expectations.
Following her success at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Wakama shared her coaching philosophy in an interview with Forbes.com. At its core is a commitment to meticulous preparation. As she stated, "there's pressure everywhere—to perform, to succeed." This mindset was cultivated early in her career through the guiding principle of the "five P's": prior preparation prevents poor performance. By consistently putting herself in challenging situations, Wakama ensures she is always ready to seize opportunities and overcome obstacles. This disciplined and proactive approach, honed on the international stage, is set to foster a culture of resilience and readiness within the Chicago Sky.
Before her groundbreaking achievements with Nigeria, Wakama honed her skills in player development and team management as the director of women's basketball operations at Manhattan College. This collegiate experience provided her with a robust foundation in nurturing emerging talent. Her expertise is expected to be invaluable for the Sky, particularly in developing promising young players like Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso. With her proven track record of transforming potential into performance, Wakama is well-positioned to help these athletes elevate their games.
The Sky's recent offseason has been characterized by strategic roster overhauls aimed at building a championship-caliber team. The inclusion of seasoned professionals—such as Ariel Atkins, whose All-Star credentials and defensive prowess add depth, and Courtney Vandersloot, a veteran playmaker known for her record-setting assists—works perfectly alongside the infusion of fresh talent. This blend of experience and emerging skill, combined with Wakama's innovative coaching approach, positions the Chicago Sky as formidable contenders in the upcoming season. Wakama's philosophy of thorough preparation and strategic resilience aligns seamlessly with the Sky's mission to build a disciplined, future-ready team. As the Sky integrate international expertise with innovative strategies, they are in a prime position to elevate their performance in the upcoming WNBA season.

Kelsey Plum says she was joking about Caitlin Clark's team at All-Star Game

Los Angeles Sparks star Kelsey Plum said she was joking when she took a verbal shot at Caitlin Clark and her team at the All-Star Game last month , comments that drew significant pushback. 'I made a really bad joke,' Plum said on Sue Bird's 'Bird's Eye View' podcast that dropped Friday. Plum said she was trying to have fun with Team Clark at the All-Star Game in Indianapolis on July 19 when she said Clark's side didn't show up for that morning meeting to discuss collective bargaining agreement talks. The union and the WNBA are in the midst of negotiations, and all the players in the All-Star Game wore T-shirts that read, 'Pay Us What You Owe Us,' including Clark. Plum said at the post-game news conference the players decided that morning to wear the shirts, but 'zero members of Team Clark were very present for that.' There was especially a big blowback on social media toward Plum, who said her intention was to bring levity to a serious topic but misread the room. 'I was making a joke they were hungover even though our team nickname was 'Hungover,'' Plum said. 'I was like, 'At least we made it.' Obviously, we were all on the same page. We all wore the shirts. We're all unified. I think if anything I was more discouraged because I felt like (the comments) took away from the moment of what we were trying to do.' ___ AP WNBA:

Olympic gold medal-winning rowing star to speak at Cumbrian village hall

A gold medal-winning Olympic rower is set to talk at a Cumbrian village hall to raise money for its refurbishment. Emily Craig MBE, 33, who won a gold medal in the lightweight double sculls rowing alongside teammate Imogen Grant at the Paris 2024 Olympics, will be appearing at Old Hutton Village Hall on Saturday, August 23. The appearance by the former Olympian at the special 'Afternoon Tea Party' is to raise funds for refurbishments in the village hall which itself provides many groups in the area with a centralised place to congregate. Groups such as the Women's Institute (WI) use the venue as well as it hosting yoga classes, badminton, bowling, birthday parties, and christening parties, amongst many other things. A poster for the event next week (Image: Supplied) The village hall came in to existence over 100 years ago and although it was refurbished around 25 years ago, money is now needed to pay for new energy-efficient boilers to better heat the building in the winter months. Craig, herself not a local to the area, is the daughter of the village's yoga class leader Angela Craig, who moved to Old Hutton 10 years ago. The Olympic rowing champion, who is also a world and European champion, is set to tell stories of her journey to the top of her sport to those in attendance at the special Tea Party. She began rowing aged 12, falling in love with the sport thereafter, and subsequently announcing that she had an Olympic dream, which she pursued at all costs. Her journey to Olympic gold last year was an arduous one, with many challenges and heartbreaks along the way. Perhaps, the most heartbreaking of events was when she and her doubles partner, Imogen Grant, missed out on a medal at the Tokyo Olympics by just an agonising 0.01 seconds. This, however, made her triumph even sweeter last year. Emily Craig is speaking from 2.30 pm on Saturday, August 23, at Old Hutton Village Hall, with readers being able to buy tickets to the 'Afternoon Tea Party', which is raising important funds for the hall, by clicking on the following link: Tickets.

Kyle Schwarber's 43rd homer sends Phillies to 6-2 win over Nats. Closer Duran injured in 9th

WASHINGTON (AP) — Kyle Schwarber hit his 43rd homer, a tiebreaking, three-run shot in the seventh inning, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Washington Nationals 6-2 on Friday night to snap a three-game skid. Bryce Harper followed Schwarber with a drive over the center-field fence, the sixth time this season the Phillies have homered back-to-back. Both ex-Nats were cheered by a pro-Philly crowd of 35,143, and Schwarber got 'M-V-P!' chants when he batted in the ninth. Phillies closer Jhoan Duran, pitching in a non-save situation in the ninth, took a sharp grounder off his right foot from Paul DeJong and came up limping. After a lengthy visit by trainers, he rode off the field in the Nationals' bullpen cart. After a solid start by Nationals ace MacKenzie Gore, the National League East-leading Phillies feasted on last-place Washington's inexperienced bullpen. Clayton Beeter (0-2) walked two batters in the seventh and gave way to Konnor Pilkington, who hung a 1-0 slider that Schwarber sent 456 feet into the right-field stands. Phillies ace Zack Wheeler was limited to five innings for the second consecutive start. He allowed two runs on four hits, including the third career homer by Nationals rookie Daylen Lile. Tanner Banks (4-2) pitched a scoreless sixth. Gore settled down after a rocky first inning that included an RBI double by Harper. He pumped his fist and yelled after he fanned Harrison Bader to end the sixth with the game tied at 2-all. Riley Adams led off the Nationals' fifth with a walk and the 263-pound catcher caught Wheeler by surprise by stealing his first base of the season. But Wheeler retired the next three batters to keep it tied. Key stat After pitching to a 13.12 ERA in four starts following his first All-Star appearance, Gore has a 1.50 ERA in his two most recent outings. Up next Veteran Phillies RHP Taijuan Walker (4-5, 3.39 ERA) opposes the Nationals' Cade Cavalli (0-0, 3.86), who will make his third start of the season, on Saturday. ___
