Pahalgam Terror Attack: Elderly Keralite, On Holiday With Family, Shot Dead In Front Of Daughter

News1823-04-2025

Ramachandran, an Edappally native, was tragically killed in a terror attack in Kashmir's Pahalgam while on holiday with his family. His daughter witnessed the horrifying incident.
Edapally native Ramachandran's love for travel, a passion shared by his wife, ended in tragedy on Tuesday when he, along with 25 others, was gunned down by terrorists in Kashmir's Pahalgam, and in front of his daughter, who had come down from Dubai to meet her parents.
Ramachandran (65) travelled to Kashmir with his wife, daughter and grandchildren for a holiday.
He was shot dead by terrorists in front of his daughter, family sources said on Wednesday.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's office confirmed his death in the terror attack late Tuesday but didn't divulge many details.
The shocked family members and friends, who rushed to Ramachandran's house in Edappally in the morning, said they were yet to come to terms with his demise.
After working in the UAE for several years, Ramachandran returned to Kochi with his wife, Sheela, some years ago.
A woman relative, who could be seen fighting back her tears, said the couple went to Kashmir along with their daughter and grandchildren, who arrived from Dubai for a holiday.
'Both of them were very much fond of travelling. A day before they went to Kashmir, Sheela called me and informed me about their journey. They were very happy," she told the media at Ramachandran's house in Edappally.
She said she is still in shock and felt a shiver thinking about the tragic demise of Ramachandran.
Sivasankaran Nair, a neighbour of Ramachandran, said they talked to each other even on the previous day, and the family proceeded to Kashmir.
'I never imagined even in my dreams that their journey would end like this. I could not believe it even now. He was a good friend," Nair said.
Family sources said Ramachandran had a daughter and a son.
His son has already left for Kashmir after hearing the news.
Expressing deep sorrow over the demise of Ramachandran, BJP state chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar said as per the information he received, the mortal remains would be brought to Kochi by 7.30-8.00 pm on Wednesday.
He also said they were tracking all details and coordinating with family members.
NORKA Roots, the field agency of the Department of Non-Resident Keralites Affairs (NORKA) launched a help desk to provide assistance, services and information to Keralites in view of the terror attack, a statement from the CMO said.
Meanwhile, actor-turned MLA Mukesh, who was among a group of Kerala legislators who had reached Kashmir as part of an official tour, said they managed to contact Ramachandran's daughter.
He said the deceased man's wife is yet to know about the husband's tragic end.
'Ramachandran's daughter is handling everything. We were told that his wife is yet to be informed about the tragedy. She is weak. The daughter has to manage that also along with the grief of her father's unexpected death," he told a TV channel over phone.
The MLA said it is heartbreaking to see the sorrow of the relatives of deceased people while recounting the shocking incident to Union Home Minister Amit Shah when he arrived to pay homage to the victims.

‘BJP leader's demand to make Urdu non-mandatory in upcoming exam raises hackles in Kashmir'

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sunil Sharma's demand of making the working knowledge of Urdu non-mandatory for the Naib Tehsildar examination in Jammu and Kashmir has raised concerns in the Valley, with both the ruling National Conference and Opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) accusing the party of 'erasing J&K's cultural legacy.' On Thursday, J&K Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma called on Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and sought his intervention, saying that making one of J&K's five official languages 'violates the constitutional principles of equal opportunity and administrative impartiality, and it creates an unfair barrier, particularly disadvantaging aspirants from the Jammu Division'. Sharma was accompanied by BJP's J&K unit president Sat Sharma Sharma's demand comes after the J&K Services Selection Board's (JKSSB) June 9 notification for 75 revenue posts. In its guidelines for the exam, the SSB specified that paper two of the exam will comprise checking the candidate's 'working knowledge of Urdu'. Urdu is used in revenue records, land settlements, court judgments as well as legal correspondence in the UT, making a functional knowledge of the language necessary for revenue-related positions. However, National Conference MLA and the party's chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq condemned the BJP leader's demand, emphasising that the place of Urdu in J&K's revenue, judicial and administrative system is 'rooted in history, not in any political or sectarian agenda'. Urdu, he said, became the official administrative language of J&K over 130 years ago during Maharaja's reign, 'evolving naturally as a unifying and functional language for all regions and communities'. PDP's Pulwama MLA Waheed Para also warned against removing the language requirement stating that the demand 'risks erasing J&K's rich archive and cultural legacy'. 'Urdu is more than a language, it's a key part of the region's heritage. Undermining it divides communities and rewrites memory,' he said.

A lease renewal at CM's office

There was a piece of public performance, there were private conversations—and plenty of whispers off-stage. Happily for CM Bhajan Lal Sharma, the important facts all seem in virtuous alignment. When BJP president J.P. Nadda chose Jaipur to mark the 300th birth anniversary of Ahilyabai Holkar, it wasn't just about honouring a Maratha queen. Sharma, 18 months young in his tenure, had never managed to get himself off the receiving end of pointed social media gossip. Credible or not, the buzz about a change of guard was always in the air, like a beast with a life of its own.

BJP-RSS afraid of Keezhadi's archaeological truth: Stalin on Centre's remark

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday responded sharply to Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat's remarks accusing the DMK of playing divisive politics over the Keezhadi excavations. Stalin criticised the BJP for continuing to question the archaeological findings, despite what he described as irrefutable scientific evidence confirming the antiquity of the findings of the a post on X, Stalin wrote: 'Even when confronted with carbon-dated artefacts and Accelerator Mass Spectrometry reports from international laboratories on the Keezhadi excavations, they continue to demand 'more proof'. And here is the 'Proof'.' He accused the BJP of dismissing scientifically established history while promoting the 'mythical' Sarasvati Civilisation without credible on the contrary, despite strong opposition from respected historians and archaeologists, the BJP continues to promote the mythical Sarasvati Civilisation. They do so without credible evidence, while dismissing the rigorously proven antiquity of Tamil culture,' Stalin said. He further alleged that the BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ecosystem feared the truth of Tamil history because it did not serve their ideological narrative. 'When it comes to Keezhadi and the enduring truth of Tamil heritage, the BJP-RSS ecosystem recoils — not because evidence is lacking, but because the truth does not serve their script,' he said.'We fought for centuries to unearth our history. They fight every day to erase it,' Stalin added, concluding, 'The world is watching. So is time.'Stalin's post came in response to Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat's remarks on June 11, in which he alleged that the DMK government was refusing to cooperate with the central government on Keezhadi research. He claimed that the DMK was attempting to politicise the excavation a post on X, Shekhawat said, 'Honourable Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin, we do not hesitate to release any statement. In fact, if such research is scientifically proven, we will also be proud of it along with you. But for the acceptance of today's scientific world, we need more scientific and strong evidence.'He added, 'That is why, instead of rushing to politicise the excavation data, we have requested the Tamil Nadu government to support the central government in continuing the research until more scientific data is available. I cannot understand why the Tamil Nadu government is reluctant to cooperate.''Tamil Nadu is an integral part of India — its heritage should be celebrated through honest knowledge, not through divisive sentiments,' Shekhawat Minister Thangam Thennarasu also strongly criticised the Union Minister Shekhawat over the Centre's stance on the Keeladi (also known as Keezhadi) archaeological findings. On Wednesday, the DMK Minister asked whether the Centre's reluctance to recognise the archaeological findings stemmed from a desire to treat Tamils as 'second-class citizens.'He accused the Centre of repeatedly finding excuses to avoid acknowledging the Keezhadi excavations, which he said have been internationally recognised for their historical significance. 'First they said there was nothing in Keezhadi. Next they transferred the research officer. Then they said they would not allocate any funds henceforth. Finally, they put the submitted report on hold for two years. Now they come and say that the evidence is not enough. It is common for them to reject the history of the Tamils every time. The reasons they find are only different,' he had said. IN THIS STORY#Tamil Nadu
