Over the three-day festival, 147 groups and about 14,000 dancers are scheduled to participate. Meanwhile, as the first anti-heatstroke measure of its kind, the local River and National Highway Office of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism is circulating groundwater through pipes of a snow-melting system under part of the parade route's sidewalk to lower the surface temperature. Hiroshima A-bomb virtual reality tour popular with foreign visitors
HIROSHIMA (Kyodo) -- A tour utilizing virtual reality headsets to provide an immersive experience of the devastation caused by the 1945 atomic bombing of the Japanese city of Hiroshima and how it was rebuilt is proving popular with foreign visitors. In the first four months through July of fiscal 2025, the number of participants was already above the 2,000 registered for the whole of fiscal 2024, and many of them were foreign visitors, said Hiroshi Yamaguchi of Tabimachi-Gate Hiroshima Co., the local firm which has been offering the experience since 2021. During the 80-minute tour within the Peace Memorial Park, participants can see images of the city from before the bombing 80 years ago to its current state. The headsets equipped with built-in sensors recreate the experiences of Eizo Nomura starting from the inside of a building where he was exposed to the bombing around 170 meters away from the blast epicenter. The city of Hiroshima is also using other technologies to pass on survivors' testimonies. It is currently developing a device using artificial intelligence that will allow people to have simulated conversations with atomic bomb survivors on a screen, aiming to preserve firsthand testimonies. "It is impossible to replicate that day completely. Even so, we need to make every effort to let people experience the reality of the atomic bombing with their five senses," said Hiroshi Harada, an 86-year-old survivor and former director of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum who gave advice for the creation of the virtual reality tour.
