Iraq targets 7 million barrels daily oil output by 2029
Speaking at the Iraq Energy 2025 conference in Baghdad, Maarij outlined the ministry's strategic priorities, highlighting the plan to "reach a production capacity of seven million barrels per day (bpd) within five years." He also emphasized efforts to eliminate gas flaring and end the import of petroleum products in the near future.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani inaugurated the conference, hosted by the Iraq Development Platform, with the participation of ministers, officials, and international stakeholders.
According to the Iraq Development Platform, IEC is dedicated to driving innovation, attracting investment, and promoting sustainable growth in Iraq's dynamic energy sector.
The conference aims to tackle key challenges and identify opportunities across traditional oil and gas industries as well as emerging renewable energy solutions. Through strategic partnerships, insightful discussions, and groundbreaking research, the IEC seeks to build a secure, prosperous, and sustainable energy future for Iraq.

Iraq, Saudi Arabia ink sweeping anti-drug pact
Shafaq News – Riyadh / Baghdad Iraq and Saudi Arabia signed a 17-point memorandum of understanding to boost joint efforts in combating drug trafficking and the smuggling of chemical precursors, according to a statement released by the Iraqi Minister of Health. The MoU outlines cooperation in information exchange, technical expertise sharing, and early warning systems, as well as joint efforts in prevention, monitoring, and surveillance. The statement described the signing as a 'significant step' in advancing regional partnerships to counter the growing threat of narcotics, reaffirming Iraq's commitment to collaborating with regional allies. The two countries have maintained close coordination in drug interdiction efforts. On March 16, Iraqi authorities foiled a smuggling attempt involving nearly seven million amphetamine pills hidden in a shipment of children's toys and ironing boards. The bust was made possible through intelligence shared by Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Interior. In a separate case, Iraq's Interior Ministry seized around 1.1 tons of Captagon pills smuggled from Syria. Iraqi officials confirmed that the operation was carried out with support from Saudi Arabia's General Directorate of Narcotics Control, which provided intelligence indicating the route through Syria and Turkiye.

Iraq: Major ISIS figure arrested
Shafaq News – Nineveh Abu Salem al-Iraqi, a senior ISIS figure, was arrested in Nineveh province during an intelligence-led operation by Iraq's National Security Service, security sources told Shafaq News on Wednesday. The arrest took place in the Qatanbiyah area of Sinjar, 'after al-Iraqi was lured back into the country through a fabricated job offer arranged by the agency using one of his former acquaintances,' the sources said, adding that he had been in hiding for over a decade, using forged identities to evade capture. Preliminary investigations revealed his direct involvement in the killing of an Iraqi soldier during ISIS's large-scale offensive across the country in 2014. Meanwhile, the US-led International Coalition praised the operation in a statement, calling it a new success in intelligence and security coordination between Iraqi forces and international partners, 'as part of ongoing efforts to eliminate remaining ISIS elements.'

Israeli airstrikes pound southern Lebanon
Shafaq News – Beirut Israeli warplanes launched a wave of airstrikes across southern Lebanon on Wednesday, injuring several civilians, according to Lebanese media. The National News Agency reported that the strikes targeted a vehicle and equipment depot in Deir Seryan, in the Marjayoun district, while others hit the town of Zawtar in neighboring Nabatieh. Additional raids reportedly struck the outskirts of Ansar, also in Nabatieh, as well as areas in Mahmoudiyah, the Barbij outskirts of Jbaa, and the vicinity of Tuffahata. Although the agreement stipulates a full Israeli withdrawal, five military outposts reportedly remain in the south.
