Barbara Cartland celebrated in Hertfordshire exhibition

BBC News15-02-2025

A century after her first novel was published, an exhibition is set to show a "whole other side" to the colourful character of Dame Barbara Cartland. The Art of Romance opens today at Hertford Museum to mark the 100 years of Jig-Saw - the first of her 723 novels. So, who was Dame Barbara and what else is she known for beyond her extravagant outfits and love stories?
Heroines and peril
Dame Barbara was born in Birmingham in 1901 and moved to London in 1919 after losing her father in World War One. She began to write gossip columns for newspapers and penned her first romance novel, which was published a few years later in 1925.It would be the first of many, with titles such as A Gamble with Hearts, The Cave of Love and A Knight in Paris. On average, she wrote a novel each fortnight, dictating the stories to her secretary."She was often asked 'How do you keep churning them out and making them different?' But she travelled a lot and would set them in different countries and historical periods," said Sara Taylor, the museum's curator."There were heroes, often a marquis or duke, and young heroines, who were 18-year-old virgins. There's a bit of peril thrown in and things come right at the end."Dame Barbara, who later lived in Hertfordshire until her death in 2000, became closely connected to the aristocracy herself when her daughter Raine married Earl Spencer - the father of Diana, Princess of Wales.
Sex and controversy
By the 1970s some questioned why Dame Barbara's chaste heroines never had sexual experiences.Ms Taylor added: "A lot of journalists were asking 'Why does nobody ever go to bed with anybody if they're not married?' "But it didn't matter that that wasn't the fashion. She stuck with it and romance came back in style."The issue was famously addressed in a BBC TV interview with Terry Wogan, as Dame Barbara appeared alongside bestselling author of erotic fiction, Jackie Collins.Dame Barbara described Collins' books as "terrible, disgusting" and asked: "Don't you think it has helped the perverts?"Collins, unphased, replied: "There's room for both of us: for your books, which I'm sure are terrific, and for mine which are a little more racy."Another author, Georgette Heyer, also reportedly wrote to Dame Barbara in the 1950s and accused her of plagiarising elements of her historical novels, but the dame's son, Ian McCorquodale, dismissed the allegations at the time.
Aviation breakthrough
Dame Barbara was someone who loved to take on a challenge, according to her granddaughter Tara Parker."Once the men at a dinner party said they were better drivers than the women, and she wasn't having that. So she set up a group of women to race MG cars," she said. She was also an accomplished pilot, and at the age of 30 she looked for a way to make gliders travel further. In 1931, along with two RAF officers she invented the first aeroplane-towed glider and made a record-breaking flight of 200 miles.
Campaigner for change
Dame Barbara's determination also extended to tackling injustice and helping others."She was an incredibly hard worker - she worked up to 16 hrs a day - but it wasn't always on the romantic books," added Ms Parker."She was a great campaigner for people less fortunate."During World War Two, Dame Barbara took a mobile library around to army officers and put together a wedding dress lending facility.Ms Parker said: "She realised because of rationing, women couldn't get married in white as there wasn't enough cloth. "She bought some second-hand dresses and by the end she was lending out about 1,000 items."
"She's often highlighted as somebody who wasn't keen on the emancipation of women - But a lot of what she did was actually for the benefit of women," said Ms Taylor."She was particularly interested in women's health, and she campaigned for better living conditions and nutrition for the elderly."Dame Barbara later became a Hertfordshire county councillor and fought for a change in the law to enable children of Romany gypsies to attend school."Apparently she was really horrified to discover that traveller children weren't allowed to attend local schools because they didn't have a fixed address," her granddaughter said."So she campaigned for traveller sites, and there is one in Hertfordshire called Barbaraville."
'A massive Barbara fan'
Ms Taylor said she knew very little about Barbara Cartland before putting the exhibition together, which includes artwork by Francis Marshall and some of the dame's flamboyant clothes."I just thought of the hats and pink dresses, the Pekingese and the novels," she added."I had no idea that she'd campaigned for all these different things."So, I hope that by visiting the exhibition, people can see a different side to Barbara, that there was a serious side to her – because she's perceived as eccentric."She continued: "You'll come out a massive Barbara fan at the end of it, because I don't see how you couldn't. I think you'll still have a ball - you might not think that you will, but you will."Barbara Cartland: The Art of Romance runs from 15 February to 1 June at Hertford Museum.

Inside Saw's future as 'disagreements' over film left horror franchise 'dead'

The Saw films were a staple of 2000s horror, introducing fans to the twisted, torturous traps of the iconic Jigsaw killer. Directed by James Wan and co-written with Leigh Whannell, the first film was released in 2004 in which serial killer Jigsaw imprisoned Adam Stanheight ( Whannell) and Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) with the purpose of subjecting them to a series of puzzles to escape. Across the franchise, Jigsaw – or John Kramer (Tobin Bell), as the jaw-dropping ending of the first film reveals – has attracted acolytes who have continued his twisted games spanning 10 films so far. Released in 2023, Saw X took us back in time to the period between Saw and Saw II in which Kramer desperately seeks life-saving treatment following his cancer diagnosis, but is instead duped by con artists and enacts his bloody revenge. Soon after its release, an 11th film was announced, but the production of Saw XI has been anything but smooth with delays, a cancellation, and rumours of behind-the-scenes drama. With a potential lifeline for the legendary horror series now in the mix, we take a look at what exactly is going on with Saw XI. Following the runaway success of Saw X, it was confirmed in December 2023 that Saw XI was on its way. Saw X landed the highest Rotten Tomatoes rating for any film in the franchise, grossing a whopping $125million (£92.3m) worldwide. It was announced that Kevin Greutert, who directed the 10th film, would be returning for Saw XI, and Bell would also be reprising his role as the iconic John Kramer. Co-writer Patrick Melton – who penned Saw IV, Saw V, Saw VI, and Saw 3D – teased what fans could expect from the 'very timely' plot of the 11th installment. 'It taps into the same themes of Saw VI, where you're a citizen, you feel angry and frustrated with something, you feel like you can't do anything, and John Kramer's going to do it,' he told The Hollywood Reporter. Given Bell's return, it seems the 11th film was set to be another prequel set between the events of Saw and Saw II, which could have meant we would see Shawnee Smith's Amanda Young hit the big screen again. A post-credit scene from Saw X also saw Costas Mandylor reprise his role as police detective turned Jigsaw disciple Mark Hoffman, which could mean he was set to star in Saw XI though this was never confirmed. Speaking to SFX magazine, producer Oren Koules hinted that it would be a direct follow-up to the events of Saw X. 'Cecilia is still alive and Tobin and Shawnee are in a foreign country still. So that, to me, would be the natural place to take at least the next one,' he revealed. Saw XI was originally set to be released on September 27 of the same year, but was delayed until September this year, it was announced in April 2024. Never Let Go, starring Halle Berry, took the film's original release date. Two Lionsgate titles saw their release dates change in the same announcement – the remake of The Crow and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. After a period of silence over the film, sources told Bloody Disgusting that Saw XI was 'totally, 100% dead' due to disagreements at studio level. The report, released on March 27, claimed 'everything went sideways in January 2024' due to producers fighting. 'It's totally dead,' the insider said. 'It's 100% over. Almost a year now.' They claimed that one producer attempted to 'plough forward' with production, while the other 'put up roadblocks' that halted production. '[Lionsgate] didn't have anyone to smooth over the disagreement,' the source added, claiming 'greed and ego won.' Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Melton confirmed the claims that the movie has 'stalled at a managerial level.' 'The reason it's held up is just, there's inter-squabbling between producers and Lionsgate. They just can't quite get on the same page,' he said. He continued: 'It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. There's higher-level things at play.' Saw – Netflix and Prime Video Saw II – Netflix Saw III – Netflix Saw IV – Available to rent via Prime Video, Apple TV, and the Sky Store Saw V – Available to rent via Prime Video, Apple TV, and the Sky Store Saw VI – Available to rent via Prime Video, Apple TV, and the Sky Store Saw: 3D – Available to rent via Prime Video, Apple TV, and the Sky Store Jigsaw – Available to rent via Prime Video, Apple TV, and the Sky Store Spiral: From The Book of Saw – Available to rent via Prime Video, Apple TV, and the Sky Store Saw X – Netflix The writer claimed he and writing partner Marcus Dunstan turned in a draft of the script in 2024, but that he hadn't 'heard anything' since then. Greutert also addressed the apparent cancellation in a Reddit post, writing: 'Let's just say that this past year+ has been among the saddest and most frustrating of my life.' A week after the damning news of the Saw XI cancellation, fans were offered an unusual glimmer of hope. The franchise's killer mascot, Billy the Puppet, posted a cryptic statement suggesting the game is far from over. 'I've seen the rumors. They say it's Game Over. You all should know me better than that. The game is never over,' the tricycle-riding puppet said in a statement shared by Lionsgate. But at the same time, it was announced that Saw XI had been completely removed from Lionsgate's release schedule, seemingly sealing its fate. Which brings us to June 4, 2025, when Deadline reported that Blumhouse is allegedly in the process of acquiring perspective rights to Twisted Pictures' portion of Saw. If the deal goes ahead, Blumhouse would take over the ownership of the franchise rights from Twisted Pictures owners Mark Burg and Oren Koules. Lionsgate would still be involved in the project, seeing as the company owns 50% of the franchise. More Trending If Blumhouse takes over the Saw franchise, and therefore Saw XI, it would mean Saw is reunited with co-creator James Wan following Blumhouse's merger with his company Atomic Monster. It is unknown what stage the deal is at, as Lionsgate, Twisted Pictures, and Blumhouse have not yet addressed the report. It could mean that Saw XI has been brought back from the dead by Blumhouse, famed for titles such as Paranormal Activity, The Purge, Insidious, Sinister, and many more. Aussie Saw filmmaker James Wan shares his heartbreak after legendary producer who helped him get his big break dies aged 55

Australian filmmaker James Wan has paid tribute to beloved Saw movie producer Jason Constantine who died aged 55 on Tuesday from brain cancer. The horror director, 48, who worked on most of the Saw movies with Constantine, posted several photos of the pair together as he shared his heartbreak. 'We lost a truly great friend and human being in Jason. I've known Jason since we first came out here to make Saw. That movie is what it is today because of him,' he wrote. 'He believed in the project so much, they brought it to Lionsgate and championed it before the movie was even shot.' Wan went on to thank his late friend for helping him transform what began as a student film into a billion dollar franchise. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'Jason was an unsung hero of the franchise, a constant avid supporter of the movies and the filmmakers involved,' he added. 'But more importantly, he was a genuinely kind, sweet, caring, loving man. 'A true anomaly in a town like Hollywood. And a great father and husband too.' After Constantine helped him to break into the industry, Wan went on to direct many acclaimed Hollywood blockbusters, including Fast and Furious 7 and The Conjuring. Constantine was co-president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group and executive producer of all ten Saw movies, created by Wan and his writing partner Leigh Whannell. He also produced the Australian-filmed US movies See No Evil, starring Rachael Taylor, and The Condemned featuring Neighbours actress Madeleine West. The producer died at his Los Angeles home on Tuesday after a long battle with brain cancer. Across ten movies made from 2004 - 2023, the Saw franchise has made over AU$1bn at the box office. Wan went on to thank his late friend for helping him transform what began as a student film into a billion dollar franchise In addition to a mostly American cast, the films featured Australian actor Costas Mandylor as a villainous detective. The franchise kicked off with Saw, which hit theatres October 27, 2004, and helped put director Wan and writer Whannell on the map. The first film was produced on a modest budget and made over $100m at the box office, sparking an iconic franchise. Saw II followed just a year later, with Darren Lynn Bousman replacing Wan at the helm and co-writing the script with Whannell. The most recent movie movie, Saw X, was released in 2023 and was produced by both Wan and Constantine.
