Inside Saw's future as 'disagreements' over film left horror franchise 'dead'

Metro06-06-2025
The Saw films were a staple of 2000s horror, introducing fans to the twisted, torturous traps of the iconic Jigsaw killer.
Directed by James Wan and co-written with Leigh Whannell, the first film was released in 2004 in which serial killer Jigsaw imprisoned Adam Stanheight ( Whannell) and Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) with the purpose of subjecting them to a series of puzzles to escape.
Across the franchise, Jigsaw – or John Kramer (Tobin Bell), as the jaw-dropping ending of the first film reveals – has attracted acolytes who have continued his twisted games spanning 10 films so far.
Released in 2023, Saw X took us back in time to the period between Saw and Saw II in which Kramer desperately seeks life-saving treatment following his cancer diagnosis, but is instead duped by con artists and enacts his bloody revenge.
Soon after its release, an 11th film was announced, but the production of Saw XI has been anything but smooth with delays, a cancellation, and rumours of behind-the-scenes drama.
With a potential lifeline for the legendary horror series now in the mix, we take a look at what exactly is going on with Saw XI.
Following the runaway success of Saw X, it was confirmed in December 2023 that Saw XI was on its way.
Saw X landed the highest Rotten Tomatoes rating for any film in the franchise, grossing a whopping $125million (£92.3m) worldwide.
It was announced that Kevin Greutert, who directed the 10th film, would be returning for Saw XI, and Bell would also be reprising his role as the iconic John Kramer.
Co-writer Patrick Melton – who penned Saw IV, Saw V, Saw VI, and Saw 3D – teased what fans could expect from the 'very timely' plot of the 11th installment.
'It taps into the same themes of Saw VI, where you're a citizen, you feel angry and frustrated with something, you feel like you can't do anything, and John Kramer's going to do it,' he told The Hollywood Reporter.
Given Bell's return, it seems the 11th film was set to be another prequel set between the events of Saw and Saw II, which could have meant we would see Shawnee Smith's Amanda Young hit the big screen again.
A post-credit scene from Saw X also saw Costas Mandylor reprise his role as police detective turned Jigsaw disciple Mark Hoffman, which could mean he was set to star in Saw XI though this was never confirmed.
Speaking to SFX magazine, producer Oren Koules hinted that it would be a direct follow-up to the events of Saw X.
'Cecilia is still alive and Tobin and Shawnee are in a foreign country still. So that, to me, would be the natural place to take at least the next one,' he revealed.
Saw XI was originally set to be released on September 27 of the same year, but was delayed until September this year, it was announced in April 2024.
Never Let Go, starring Halle Berry, took the film's original release date.
Two Lionsgate titles saw their release dates change in the same announcement – the remake of The Crow and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.
After a period of silence over the film, sources told Bloody Disgusting that Saw XI was 'totally, 100% dead' due to disagreements at studio level.
The report, released on March 27, claimed 'everything went sideways in January 2024' due to producers fighting.
'It's totally dead,' the insider said. 'It's 100% over. Almost a year now.'
They claimed that one producer attempted to 'plough forward' with production, while the other 'put up roadblocks' that halted production.
'[Lionsgate] didn't have anyone to smooth over the disagreement,' the source added, claiming 'greed and ego won.'
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Melton confirmed the claims that the movie has 'stalled at a managerial level.'
'The reason it's held up is just, there's inter-squabbling between producers and Lionsgate. They just can't quite get on the same page,' he said.
He continued: 'It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. There's higher-level things at play.'

The writer claimed he and writing partner Marcus Dunstan turned in a draft of the script in 2024, but that he hadn't 'heard anything' since then.
Greutert also addressed the apparent cancellation in a Reddit post, writing: 'Let's just say that this past year+ has been among the saddest and most frustrating of my life.'
A week after the damning news of the Saw XI cancellation, fans were offered an unusual glimmer of hope.
The franchise's killer mascot, Billy the Puppet, posted a cryptic statement suggesting the game is far from over.
'I've seen the rumors. They say it's Game Over. You all should know me better than that. The game is never over,' the tricycle-riding puppet said in a statement shared by Lionsgate.
But at the same time, it was announced that Saw XI had been completely removed from Lionsgate's release schedule, seemingly sealing its fate.
Which brings us to June 4, 2025, when Deadline reported that Blumhouse is allegedly in the process of acquiring perspective rights to Twisted Pictures' portion of Saw.
If the deal goes ahead, Blumhouse would take over the ownership of the franchise rights from Twisted Pictures owners Mark Burg and Oren Koules.
Lionsgate would still be involved in the project, seeing as the company owns 50% of the franchise. More Trending
If Blumhouse takes over the Saw franchise, and therefore Saw XI, it would mean Saw is reunited with co-creator James Wan following Blumhouse's merger with his company Atomic Monster.
It is unknown what stage the deal is at, as Lionsgate, Twisted Pictures, and Blumhouse have not yet addressed the report.
It could mean that Saw XI has been brought back from the dead by Blumhouse, famed for titles such as Paranormal Activity, The Purge, Insidious, Sinister, and many more.

Hollywood A-Lister confesses he had sex on Disneyland ride - 'It was f***ed up'

The 40-year-old actor confessed that he had a rather X-rated ride on one of the family-friendly theme park's attractions in a recent podcast interview - and that wasn't all of it A famous face, known for his acting in a number of hit 2010s movies, appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast and admitted to having sex at Disneyland. ‌ Dave Franco, fellow famous brother of James Franco and an actor who appeared in classic comedies such as Superbad, Bad Neighbors, and 21 Jump Street, has caused quite the stir with his recent confession. The film star sat down with host Alex Cooper on Wednesday and told tales about his mischievous past. ‌ During their candid chat, the two of them playfully discussed some of his most memorable wild moments. One of the times he mentioned was throwing candy at his middle school crush, and the unhinged night he first met his wife. ‌ In one particular segment named 'Confess or Text,' Dave revealed something that had Alex in complete shock. When asking the actor about the wildest place he'd ever had sex, he shared: "Um, something may have happened at one point on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland." The pair burst into fits of laughter, and Alex fell into laughter before he added: "The funny f****ed up thing about that is I think there are cameras on every inch of that place, but we were pretty covert... we'll leave it at that." Alex couldn't believe what she had just heard and told the Hollywood star she was "obsessed" with him, while he joked that his face had turned red. ‌ Dave officially started dating his wife, Alison Brie, back in 2012, after meeting at a New Orleans Mardi Gras party in 2011, and they were engaged three years later. They tied the knot in 2017, and as fans anticipated the two starting a family, Alison stated in an interview that same year that she does not want to have any children. The married couple shared the screen together in a recent horror film created by Michael Shanks, called Together. Neon Films shared a flirty snap of Dave and Allison kissing in front of a billboard of themselves as their on-screen couple, captioned, "the perfect date night horror movie.' ‌ Alison spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about what it was like working with her husband—especially when it came to the intimacy side of things. She explained: "Both of us have done intimate scenes with other actors, of course, but without giving too much away, a lot of this film requires close proximity from its two leads to a greater extent than anything I've done before. "I think we pretty much finished every day of shooting and said to one another, "I don't know how you could make this movie without a real-life couple because of some of the situations we found ourselves in." However, it's not the first time the couple has found themselves in a bit of a sticky situation on set, as Dave had previously directed his wife in the movie Somebody I Used To Know. At the time of its release, Alison discussed what filming those sex scenes was like, clarifying that "we are actors, and this is our job." She added: "It's actually not that weird. And with something like this, because it's our baby that we made together, I think our first priority is always just the movie."

Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya's absence from spotlight fuels wild rumours

After winning an Oscar for Judas and the Black Messiah, Daniel Kaluuya has retreated from the spotlight, which has led some fans to believe that the star now leads a secret life outside of Hollywood Daniel Kaluuya's career has recently become the subject of wild speculation following his absence from the screen. ‌ Since winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2021 for Judas and the Black Messiah, the British star has kept a surprisingly low profile in Hollywood blockbusters. When he bagged his Oscar, Kaluuya was reportedly flooded with movie offers - but he has since stayed clear from appearing on screen. However, this had ultimately led to wild rumours emerging online, particularly after a social media post claimed he'd 'joined a cult.' ‌ The post blew up with over 24 million views before being pulled, which had ignited an old story dating back to the filming of Nope. At that time, US media outlets linked Kaluuya to a New Age figure named Vanylla Salimah Mahmoud, also known as Heir Holiness, who described herself as his spiritual adviser and once said she was his manager. ‌ Reports said Kaluuya had ended his relationship with his previous agency and publicists amid concerns about Mahmoud's influence. However, a Hollywood executive close to the actor said Kaluuya hasn't disappeared but is simply following his own path, focusing on smaller films, writing, and producing rather than mainstream blockbusters. ‌ Currently, Kaluuya is involved in the upcoming Spider-Verse animated film and is developing a live-action movie based on the children's character Barney. He is now represented by the William Morris Endeavor agency and has several projects underway through his production company, 59%. Raised on a council estate in north London by his Ugandan single mother, Kaluuya began his career in British television before gaining international recognition with Jordan Peele's 2017 film Get Out, which earned him Oscar and BAFTA nominations. ‌ When asked about the cult rumours in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kaluuya said: 'It showed me that I was in a paradigm of fame. An unnamed, unverified source has more credibility than what is actually said and the truth of the situation... That's not what happened.' Heir Holiness also denied the cult allegations, calling Kaluuya 'family' and saying, 'They made it up. It was very shocking... My main thing was to make sure he's safe and able to do his work. All of it is fake.' Born in London in 1989 to Ugandan parents, the actor grew up on a Camden council estate. He attended Torriano Primary School, St Aloysius' College, and Camden School for Girls in its co-educational sixth-form for his A-levels. From a young age, he had a passion for acting, writing his first play at nine and studying the art at the Anna Scher Theatre School. Kaluuya began acting professionally in 2006, gaining early fame for his role as Posh Kenneth in Skins and appearing in shows like Doctor Who and Silent Witness before breaking into film.
