Julia Garner Responds To Fantastic Four Silver Surfer Backlash

Julia Garner isn't losing sleep over what the critics have had to say about her casting in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. In the newest take on the beloved Marvel comics, the titular Fantastic Four will be played by Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm, and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and the film will see them defend Earth from Galactus and the Silver Surfer. If you're familiar with the Fantastic Four comics and the previous film adaptations, you'll know that the Silver Surfer has traditionally been depicted as a man. Memorably, in 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, the shiny humanoid alien character was played by Doug Jones and voiced by Laurence Fishburne. In light of this, there were some mixed responses when it was revealed that, in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the Silver Surfer would be played by a woman, Julia. For what it's worth, critics of the gender-swapped role predominantly changed their tune when the first trailer dropped and they actually got to see a glimpse of Julia in action. But, still, the initial pushback was there. And now, with The Fantastic Four: First Steps dropping later this month, Julia has addressed the discourse during an interview with the BBC at the film's London premiere, clarifying that she's been solely focused on putting her own spin on the iconic villain role. 'I said, 'I'm just going to still do my job,'' she told the outlet, laughing it off. 'Also, it's Shalla-Bal, so it's different.' In the 2007 Fantastic Four movie and in the original comics, the Silver Surfer is a young astronamer named Norrin Radd. Shalla-Bal is depicted in the comics as the love interest of Norrin, and so, in the new movie adaptation, Marvel Studios made the decision to make the Silver Surfer a woman by reimagining the character as Shalla-Bal. If you're confused, you can read a full breakdown of the Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer context here. When asked about the positive reception to the trailer, Julia then added: 'I was just happy that people are resonating with it, just like any other project. I'm grateful to be at this dance, to be completely honest with you.' Well, I for one will be seated in the theater on July 25. You can watch Julia's interview with the BBC here.

Netflix's new political thriller series looks more intense than I expected — here's the first trailer

Netflix has just dropped the first trailer for 'Hostage,' its upcoming political thriller series landing on August 21, and it adds new weight to what was already shaping up to be an intriguing watch. A few weeks back, I wrote about the first-look images and said it looks like a compelling binge watch, and now, with the trailer in hand, that impression only deepens. Created by Matt Charman (the mind behind 'Bridge of Spies' and 'Treason'), the limited series stars Suranne Jones and Julie Delpy as two world leaders caught in the middle of a high-stakes crisis during a global summit. One moment, they're preparing for diplomacy; the next, they're forced into a deadly game of control and survival. It's tense stuff. The trailer opens with a personal crisis at the heart of a political storm: the British Prime Minister's husband has been kidnapped, and things escalate quickly from there. Suranne Jones (who also executive produces) plays PM Abigail Dalton, shown grappling with the weight of national duty while her personal life unravels. We see flashes of mounting pressure, coded threats and tense stand-offs as a visiting French President becomes the target of a separate blackmail plot. The two leaders are thrust into a serious rivalry, each forced to make impossible decisions. Whether the two women can trust each other or whether they're being played against one another remains the central question. By the end of this short teaser, Jones's character delivers a steely statement of intent: 'They have weaponized my family. I will not be threatened. I will not negotiate. My loyalties are to this country, I will not allow it to be held to ransom.' Safe to say, she's not here to play games. Rather than going for explosive action, 'Hostage' appears to favor slow-burning psychological tension. If you're into character-driven thrillers that take their time, 'Hostage' might just be one to watch when it premieres in August. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. While the trailer sets the mood with its clipped dialogue and cold tension, 'Hostage' looks set to dig even deeper into the emotional and political fallout of a crisis at the highest level. Netflix said to expect a 'political thriller with a captivating performance from Jones at its center.' Jones told Netflix: 'I'm thrilled to be on Netflix, in something I'm really proud of. It's been something I've wanted to do for a long time. We'd talked about projects previously, but for me, it was about finding the right thing. 'Hostage' was perfect — me and Matt together, backed up by this brilliant, supportive team. I loved it.' Charman also said, 'I've been dying to find the right story to tell with Suranne and I honestly believe what she's done with this character is going to blow the Netflix audience away. An embattled British PM in the middle of a fight for her country and her family — she's fierce, ruthless, and you can't take your eyes off of her.' Behind the scenes, the creative team brings a sterling pedigree. Backed by Charman's writing and the directorial vision of Isabelle Sieb and Amy Neil, 'Hostage' is likely to channel the same high-gloss tension seen in 'Treason' and 'Vigil.' The supporting cast is strong too, with actors like Corey Mylchreest and Lucian Msamati expected to add some juicy drama. Filmed across the U.K. and France, the series already feels stylistically self-assured. With only five episodes, this definitely feels like a thriller most viewers will eat up once it lands (including me). Political thrillers usually aren't my first choice, but 'Hostage' has definitely caught my attention. A big part of that is the cast, but also how the story doesn't focus on being explosive or full of unnecessary action. Now, having seen the first trailer, I'm even more hyped. I'm also confident this thriller will deliver because Suranne Jones is at the center of it. With her proven track record in gripping dramas like 'Doctor Foster' and 'Gentlemen Jack,' she brings enough intensity to elevate any story. Having her both star and executive produce gives me faith that this series has been crafted with care. Reminder: you can stream all five episodes of 'Hostage' on Netflix starting August 21, 2025. In the meantime, see what's new on Netflix this week.

The Deeper Meaning Behind Kate Middleton's Dazzling New Ring Stack

When the Princess of Wales returned to royal duties following chemotherapy treatment last year, fans quickly clocked that she had added a new eternity ring to her collection, believed to be Cartier's Étincelle de Cartier wedding band. Over the past year, Kate has often been photographed wearing the $6,300 platinum ring, comprising 19 brilliant-cut diamonds and 19 brilliant-cut sapphires, in lieu of her more famous 12-carat oval-cut Ceylon sapphire engagement ring, which Prince William inherited from Princess Diana following her death. There was much discussion about why the Princess was wearing her new Cartier ring—often paired with her wedding band and another diamond eternity ring, believed to have been gifted by William to mark Prince George's birth in 2013—instead of her larger engagement ring. Perhaps it was simply a more everyday choice (Kate has tended to wear the latter at more formal events, such as last year's Festival of Remembrance at Royal Albert Hall.) The Princess of Wales wore her two eternity bands with her 12-carat oval-cut Ceylon sapphire engagement ring for the first time at Wimbledon over the weekend. But at Wimbledon at the weekend, Kate wore her engagement ring with both of her eternity rings, as well as her wedding band, for the first time. It comes as ring stacking is becoming increasing popular—particularly among new brides. 'We're increasingly seeing clients choose to style their eternity ring stacked with their engagement ring and wedding band, or wear it alone for a more relaxed look,' Eliza Walter, founder of Lylie Jewellery, tells Vogue. 'In warmer months or during summer holidays, many opt to wear just their wedding band and eternity ring together—a combination that feels both effortless and meaningful.' Of course, eternity rings are often deeply meaningful, traditionally bought to mark special milestones (there is speculation that Kate's Étincelle de Cartier wedding band was gifted to her by William to mark their 13th wedding anniversary last year). 'Eternity rings are a timeless symbol, a circle of precious metal traditionally set with stones all the way around, representing an unbroken bond and infinite commitment,' jeweler Rachel Boston explains. 'The continuous line of diamonds or gemstones is a reminder that, like the ring itself, true love has no beginning or end.' If Kate's choice of jewelry at Wimbledon is anything to go by, it seems that the ring stacking trend isn't going anywhere. All the better if each piece is imbued with sentimental value—a collection that's been inherited or built up over the years.
