Shubman Gill will only get better as Test captain: Chappell backs India skipper

India Today26-06-2025
Former Australia captain and ex-India head coach Greg Chappell has backed Shubman Gill to grow into the role of Test captain, saying the youngster showed promise in his debut match as skipper despite India's five-wicket loss to England in the Leeds Test.Gill, who was leading India for the first time in Tests, scored a fluent 110 in the first innings, becoming only the third Indian to hit a century on Test captaincy debut and end up on the losing side, after Virat Kohli and Dilip Vengsarkar. His knock was among the five hundreds scored by Indian batters in the match, but England's fearless fourth-innings chase of 371 - their second highest against India—stole the show.advertisementIndia head coach Gautam Gambhir backed captain Shubman Gill, defending his decision to under-bowl Shardul Thakur in the series opener against England.
Critics have pointed out Gill's perceived passivity on the field, especially when compared to the commanding presence of his predecessors Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Questions have also been raised about his tactical decisions on the final day as England's top and middle order made merry on a flat Day 5 pitch. However, Chappell urged for patience and perspective, suggesting that the 24-year-old opener has the makings of a long-term leader."Shubman Gill had a great start as a captain and as a player even if they did not get the result," Chappell was quoted as saying by news agency PTI."It was a terrific Test match. Sadly, India didn't finish on the correct side of the ledger. There were a lot of good things for them."advertisementHe went on to highlight the learnings Gill and the Indian team management can take forward."Both Gill and the Indian think tank would have learned a lot on what to take forward. Gill will only get better and better. I think his start was pretty good. Had the team taken more catches and the tail wagged a bit, the results could have been very different."Indeed, dropped catches, particularly during England's fourth-innings push, proved costly. Ben Duckett led the charge with a blistering 149, while Joe Root (53*) and debutant Jamie Smith (44*) saw the visitors home with calm authority.- EndsYou May Also Like

One of the more unwanted milestones came in the form of India's prolonged misfortune at the coin toss. With their toss loss in the third Test at Lord's, India recorded their 13th consecutive defeat at the coin flip, surpassing the West Indies' previous record of 12 consecutive toss losses in international cricket across formats in 1999 season. The streak, however, continued in the fourth Test at Manchester, making India the first team to lose 15 tosses in a row. And the new India Test captain has not been getting lucky anyway in London as he lost his fifth toss in a row. With this, India captain Shubman Gill extended India's toss-losing streak to 15th. India's toss-losing streak began in January against England in the third T20 International of the five-match series. It continued with all three tosses lost in the ODI series that followed, five more losses in the Champions Trophy 2025, and another four toss defeats in the ongoing Test series.

ENG vs IND: England opt to bowl under overcast conditions; India make four changes as Jasprit Bumrah misses out

The toss luck doesn't seem to favour Indian captain Shubman Gill in the ongoing Test series as England opted to bowl first at the Oval on Thursday in the fifth and final game. This remarkable victory not only marked her international debut but also made her the first Indian junior skater to secure the top position in the event, winning with a lead of 6.72 points. Naisha's journey began at just 4½ years old, when she first stepped onto the rink with a pair of skates. Over the years, what began as play has turned into a path of consistent dedication, hard work, and focused ambition. Her achievements include 10 National Golds, 28 State Golds, and 23 District-level Golds, and this recent international win cements her place as one of India's most promising young talents in the sport. She was also the 1st Runner-Up at the Pearl Padamsee Trophy for Excellence in Drama, proving her ability to excel across disciplines. 'Skating is where I find freedom,' says Naisha. 'Winning gold for India was a dream I lived on that rink.' Her coach, Ms. Adesh Singh (Team India Coach and an International Judge), who has trained her for 13 years, added: 'It was her moment, but it felt like ours too.'
