A 2007 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 has set a new benchmark for the model at auction, selling for a staggering £1,527,000—equivalent to just over $2.04 million—during Bonhams' prestigious sale at the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The hammer price marks the highest amount ever paid for a standard-production Veyron at public auction, surpassing previous records by a significant margin. While special-edition models like the Veyron Super Sport or Grand Sport Vitesse have fetched lofty sums in private sales, this standard 16.4 coupe now stands as the most expensive example of its kind ever publicly sold.
Originally launched in the mid-2000s, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 revolutionized the hypercar world with its 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 engine producing 1,001 horsepower. It was the first production car to exceed 250 mph, and its blend of engineering, performance, and exclusivity cemented its place in automotive history. Just 450 Veyrons were produced globally across various trims between 2005 and 2015.
The record-breaking 2007 example featured low mileage and a pristine factory-correct condition, making it particularly attractive to collectors. While Bonhams had estimated the car would sell for a figure well below its final bid, spirited competition among bidders quickly pushed the price skyward.

Auction observers note the sale as a strong indicator of the market's growing appetite for early-2000s hypercars. With values for models like the Ferrari Enzo and Porsche Carrera GT already surging, the Veyron's newfound status as a record-breaker could signal broader appreciation for the era's groundbreaking performance machines.
This latest milestone confirms that, nearly two decades after its debut, the Veyron still commands awe—and astonishing prices.

COE prices rise for all categories except motorcycles; Cat B premium hits record high since December 2023

SINGAPORE — Certificate of Entitlement (COE) premiums rose for every category, except motorcycles, in August's first bidding round on Wednesday (6 Aug). Category B premiums, for larger vehicles, rose 3.7 per cent to $123,498 from $119,101. This is the highest price for the COE category since December 2023 when it hit $130,100. In July's second bidding exercise, it actually experienced a marginal decrease of $499. The premium for Category A, which covers smaller and less powerful cars and EVs (up to 1,600cc and 130bhp and electric vehicles up to 110kW), rose 0.9 per cent to $102,009. COEs for commercial vehicles and buses (Category C) rose 2 per cent from $68,600 to $70,001 while premiums in the 'open' category (Category E) saw an increase of 1.9 per cent to finish at $122,334. Motorcycle COEs (Category D) are at $9,189 a $322 decrease from the previous bidding exercise. What is COE? The COE gives the owner the right to register and use a vehicle in Singapore for 10 years. It can be obtained through an online open auction conducted twice a month. Bidding exercises usually start at 12pm on the first and third Monday of the month, and last for three working days. Each bidding will end at 4pm on Wednesday, if there is no public holiday in between. The vehicle quota in each category will be announced before the start of each bidding exercise. After 10 years, when the COE expires, an owner can choose to de-register the vehicle or renew the COE. How is the COE quota counted? Since 1 February 2023, the number of COEs available for bidding in the corresponding vehicle category in each quarter is the rolling average of the number of vehicles deregistered over the previous four quarters. Will the COE price drop? COE prices, of course, can drop – it is dependent on supply and demand. Since 2017, the Ministry of Transport has been freezing vehicle population growth for all categories except Category C for goods vehicles and buses. The current rates will be maintained until 31 January 2028. Singapore is one of the costliest places in the world to buy a car – in fact, in 2022, the Global Wealth and Lifestyle Report 2022, released by Swiss private bank Julius Baer, found Singapore cars were the most expensive globally.

Bank of England set to cut rate as UK economy weakens

The Bank of England is widely expected to cut its key interest rate Thursday, with policymakers mindful of US tariffs and their potential risks to an already-struggling UK economy. With the BoE likely to trim borrowing costs by a quarter point to 4.0 percent, focus will be on potential changes to the central bank's economic growth and inflation outlooks. "There are clear signs of (UK) economic deterioration, particularly stemming from the labour market," Victoria Scholar, head of investment at Interactive Investor, noted ahead of the latest rate call. "Yet policymakers must weigh this up against the risk of inflationary pressures particularly with rising food prices and international uncertainty around (US President Donald) Trump's tariffs and volatility in energy markets." Against this backdrop, analysts expect splits within the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee. Some argue that while the majority of the nine policymakers, including governor Andrew Bailey, will vote for a quarter-point cut, some are likely to demand an even larger reduction and others no change. A quarter-point cut Thursday would be the BoE's fifth such reduction since starting a trimming cycle in August 2024, emphasising its "gradual" approach to reducing rates. The BoE's main task is to keep Britain's annual inflation rate at 2.0 percent but the latest official data showed it had jumped unexpectedly to an 18-month high in June. The Consumer Prices Index increased to 3.6 percent as motor fuel and food prices stayed high. - Weak economy - Latest official figures also show that Britain's economy unexpectedly contracted for a second month running in May and UK unemployment is at a near four-year high of 4.7 percent. This is largely down to Prime Minister Keir Starmer's Labour government increasing a UK business tax from April, the same month that the country became subject to Trump's 10-percent baseline tariff on most goods. London and Washington reached an agreement in May to cut levies of more than 10 percent imposed by Trump on certain UK-made items imported by the United States, notably vehicles. Last month, the BoE warned in a report that tariff unpredictability and Middle East conflicts pose risks to UK financial stability. The US Federal Reserve last week kept interest rates unchanged, defying strong political pressure from Trump to slash borrowing costs in a bid to boost the world's biggest economy. Asked about US tariffs following the decision, Fed Chair Jerome Powell told a press conference: "We're still a ways away from seeing where things settle down." The European Central Bank is meanwhile widely expected to keep rates unchanged at its next meeting, with eurozone inflation around the ECB's two-percent target. But that could change, according to some economists, based on how Trump's tariffs affect the single-currency bloc. bcp/ajb/rl/tc Error in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data
