Liverpool boss Arne Slot says it's time to 'draw a line under' the Trent Alexander-Arnold boos and 'focus on the fact we have won the league'

Daily Mail16-05-2025

Arne Slot said Liverpool need to draw a line under the Trent Alexander-Arnold chatter and focus only on the fact they have won the league.
The vice-captain announced his decision to leave the Anfield club last week and was booed by a section of the fanbase when he was substituted on to the pitch in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal.
But Slot said: 'All the pundits talked about it, all the country talked about it, but now I think it is time to draw a line under it. Let's focus on the fact we have won the league.'
Slot has been partying in Ibiza the last few days with a number of the squad heading to Dubai for a team bonding session that featured boat trips and living the high life in a luxury hotel.
But though he was pictured with the likes of Wayne Lineker and Dean Gaffney in the DJ booth of Ocean Beach, the manager's mind has been drifting to next season and how to ensure Liverpool can back up their Premier League title triumph.
He said: 'A larger part of my mind is in next season. It's a normal situation that my thoughts if I'm on the couch tonight are more into next season than they would have been if the games were still important.
'That's even more of a challenge for the players on Monday (against Brighton).'
But though he may shuffle his pack for the trip to the Amex Stadium on Monday night, Slot insists no fringe players' futures will be decided based on their performances in these last two matches.
He added: 'It would not be fair on any player to judge my opinion on them in one or two games. My mind has been made up over 10-11 months.
'Some of the players who have not played a lot are not looking forward to another season of not playing a lot. We have to be prepared if we have to strengthen our squad. But it's difficult to strengthen – we won the league as we have so many great players.'
Asked specifically about Federico Chiesa, who has played just 41 league minutes, Slot said: 'In terms of the quality he has, he deserves more playing time but unfortunately for him he's in competition with Mo Salah.
'On the left, it's competition with Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz. Three players who have had a great season.
'He was a long time not as fit as the others. That doesn't help in the beginning. Then the others did so well there's no reason to change. Is he good enough to play for us? Yes he is. But I've always felt Lucho, Cody and Mo deserved the confidence I had in them.'

England ‘a work in progress' and have a lot of improving to do

England laboured to an unimpressive 1-0 victory over Andorra, a side ranked 173rd in the world, before slipping to their first defeat to African opposition three days later. Despite Harry Kane's early goal, the warning signs were there as Dean Henderson made five saves in the first period, but after Crystal Palace's Ismaila Sarr drew the visitors level, Habib Diarra and Cheikh Sabaly struck in the second half as boos rang around the City Ground. Gallagher, who was substituted in the second half, revealed Tuchel was calm in the dressing room after the game and is frustrated the next international window is three months away. The Atletico Madrid midfielder said: 'It was a really tough game, but we're still building. There's a lot to improve and there's a lot to work on and, as a team, we'll do that. 'I'm sure the manager and the coaching staff will look back at the game and see where we can be better because there is a lot of improvement to be made, but we're moving forward. 'He's calm. He's obviously disappointed and not happy, but he's calm with us. He knows we could be a lot better. 'It's a shame because we're away from each other for a few months now, whereas he would like to kind of fix the problem straight away, but he can't because that's how it is in international football. 'It's a work in progress and all the lads and the staff and the manager are all confident and happy with the progression. 'We have a lot to build on and improve and that's what we're going to try to do.' England were accused of not showing the right attitude in their narrow win over minnows Andorra. Asked whether they had shown the right application against Senegal, Gallagher replied: 'Yeah, definitely. I think we really wanted to win and I feel like we worked hard. 'I don't think we were great, if I'm being honest. But like I keep saying, it's a kind of work in progress and we need to improve moving forward and we're all happy to be doing that.' Gallagher's focus will now switch to the Club World Cup as he prepares to join up with his Atletico team-mates in the United States ahead of their first game against Champions League winners Paris St Germain at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. He said: 'It's really exciting and I'm really looking forward to it. It's going to be a great tournament. I think it will be really exciting when all the teams are actually there and the tournament starts. 'You want to always play against the best players and the midfielders. Obviously (PSG) had an unbelievable season, so you want to be playing against these guys. We know how hard it will be, but it's good for us and it's exciting.'

Liverpool 'plotting swoop for Champions League-winning PSG star if priced out of a move for Alexander Isak' - with Premier League champions 'set to continue summer spending spree'

Liverpool are far from done with their summer splurge, according to a report, and are plotting a swoop for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola. The Premier League champions are finalising a deal for Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz, which is expected to make him the most expensive signing in British history. The Reds have also continued to be linked with Newcastle's Alexander Isak, though a deal for the Magpies striker could exceed the £126million mooted to sign Wirtz. If Newcastle, who are set for a financial windfall after qualifying for the Champions League, refuse to budge on a likely £150m valuation for the Swedish striker, the Reds may turn their attention to Barcola, according to The Sun. Reports out of Germany this week have claimed that Bayern Munich has identified the 22-year-old as a target, with his future unclear in Paris. And it has now been claimed that the Merseyside club are prepared to battle with the German giants once again this summer, following their tussle over Wirtz. Having begun the season in Luis Enrique's starting XI, Barcola found himself on the bench for the Champions League final, with his replacement Desire Doue producing a Man of the Match-winning performance in the 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan. Liverpool will look to raise funds for further summer additions - following the £29.5m arrival of Jeremie Frimpong and £45m outlay expected on Milos Kerkez - by offloading Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan looks set to leave Anfield after struggling to nail down a place in Arne Slot's starting XI, with Luis Diaz often depolyed out of position in the centre of attack during the Reds' Premier League title-winning campaign.
