China's next-gen turbine blade promises supercharged jet power, more longevity

A recently granted patent in
China's aeronautics industry has signalled a significant leap in the development of a critical component for jet engines – a next-generation self-cooling turbine blade that could mean critical advantages for both the country's military and civilian aircraft.
The patent outlined a new method for producing alloy turbine blades capable of withstanding temperatures up to 15 per cent higher than existing versions. The improved heat resistance was expected to deliver
greater engine thrust , better fuel efficiency, and longer service life.
The Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Materials under Aero Engine Corporation of China (AECC) received the patent for advanced turbine blade manufacturing in late April.
AECC has led Chinese research on military engines for fighter jets such as the
J-10CE , the same ones used by Pakistan's military – which Beijing recently confirmed shot down Indian jets – as well as civilian plane engines like the CJ1000A and CJ2000. The latest innovation helped to cement its leadership in high-performance propulsion technologies.
According to the China National Intellectual Property Administration, the patent, which was first filed in October, was co-developed by AECC and Handan Xinxing Special Steel Tube Company in northern China's Hebei province.

The former Morgan Stanley Asia chairman sparked debate last year after he penned an opinion piece which argued, in part, that Hong Kong would be caught in the 'crossfire' of the worsening US-China rivalry. 'The word caught is the word that, if I had to write the piece again, I would probably change, because I think, ironically, Hong Kong has benefited from the crossfire between the US and China,' he told the Post in a recent interview. Despite worsening ties between the two superpowers since US President Donald Trump began levying his so-called reciprocal tariffs on China and the rest of the world, Hong Kong's stock market has seen solid gains. The benchmark Hang Seng Index is up by around 50 per cent since Roach made his original claim, while Hong Kong has rocketed to the top of global fundraising table following a string of high-profile initial public offerings last month, including from mainland Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology. Roach, who is now a faculty member at Yale University, said the 'sell America' trade had become a 'global mantra' and Hong Kong was a beneficiary.

The arrest of a Chinese researcher in the United States for allegedly importing an illegal biological pathogen that could kill crops was 'politicised' by the US government and could speed up an exodus of Chinese talent from the country, according to some researchers. Advertisement According to a press release from the US Department of Justice on Tuesday, Jian Yunqing, 33, and her boyfriend, Liu Zunyong , 34, allegedly attempted to smuggle the fungus pathogen Fusarium graminearum into the country. Jian, a research fellow at the University of Michigan, was arrested in connection with the allegations against Liu. 'I personally think this incident has been politicised,' said a Chinese scientist conducting agricultural research at a leading US university. The researcher, who asked not to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter, added that it would further damage US–China collaboration in agriculture and other areas, potentially encouraging more Chinese researchers to return home.
