China's next-gen turbine blade promises supercharged jet power, more longevity

A recently granted patent in China's aeronautics industry has signalled a significant leap in the development of a critical component for jet engines – a next-generation self-cooling turbine blade that could mean critical advantages for both the country's military and civilian aircraft. The patent outlined a new method for producing alloy turbine blades capable of withstanding temperatures up to 15 per cent higher than existing versions. The improved heat resistance was expected to deliver greater engine thrust , better fuel efficiency, and longer service life. The Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Materials under Aero Engine Corporation of China (AECC) received the patent for advanced turbine blade manufacturing in late April. AECC has led Chinese research on military engines for fighter jets such as the J-10CE , the same ones used by Pakistan's military – which Beijing recently confirmed shot down Indian jets – as well as civilian plane engines like the CJ1000A and CJ2000. The latest innovation helped to cement its leadership in high-performance propulsion technologies. According to the China National Intellectual Property Administration, the patent, which was first filed in October, was co-developed by AECC and Handan Xinxing Special Steel Tube Company in northern China's Hebei province. 01:32 Chinese plane designed to travel twice as fast as Concorde completes test flight Chinese plane designed to travel twice as fast as Concorde completes test flight High-temperature alloy turbine blades are a critical component in modern jet engines, directly influencing thrust output, fuel efficiency and reliability. Conventional turbine blades tend to degrade from prolonged exposure to extreme heat, restricting overall engine performance. The newly patented method aims to overcome this limitation by improving the thermal tolerance of the blades.

SAP Insights Newsletter: Coding Fun With GenAI

GenAI coding tools promise to upend how developers work. Which isn't a bad thing; in fact, there's much to like. getty New tools, new rules. GenAI coding tools promise to upend how developers work. Which isn't a bad thing; in fact, there's much to like. The problem is when there are no clear guidelines in place about when and how those tools are used. You could end up with subpar code, issues with IP, security problems, and more. We're certainly not suggesting any of this is intentional—only that difficulties (now and later) can arise if there's a lack of supervision and strategy. Now for the good news: there are steps you can take today to build that strategy. Make sure you don't miss out by subscribing to the next SAP Insights newsletter. Here's what else you can expect from the next edition: Flying ahead. GenAI is also coming soon to a flight pattern near you. Aeronautics is a complex, heavily regulated, and expensive industry. Manufacturers are beginning to use GenAI to modernize and streamline airplane production, while researchers are using it to provide better satellite data. How ya feelin'? Employee health and wellness programs have become ubiquitous in workplaces, yet research into their efficacy has been scarce. There's a growing body of work that suggests these programs often underperform. Are these programs a bad idea? Not if they're well designed. Research that hasn't reached your inbox. Our research roundup in this issue includes insights into why shrinking now is good for later; why, when it comes to innovating, it doesn't matter where those innovators are; and why the modern workplace needs some design rethinking—turns out employees will move to companies with workspaces they like.

NASA Live Coverage, Original Content Now Streaming on Prime Video

WASHINGTON, May 6, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- NASA's on-demand streaming service, NASA+, launched a FAST (Free Ad-Supported Television) channel on Prime Video Tuesday, giving viewers another way to watch the agency's aeronautics, human spaceflight, science, and technology missions unfold on screen. Credit: NASA As the agency continues to improve life on Earth and inspire new generations through innovation, exploration, and discovery, NASA+ is dedicated to sharing stories through live launch coverage, original documentaries, family-friendly content, and more. "Streaming NASA+ on multiple platforms allows the agency to more efficiently share its missions, from launching astronauts to the International Space Station, to going behind the scenes with the team that defends Earth against asteroids, to showcasing new, high-definition images of the cosmos," said Wes Brown, acting associate administrator for the Office of Communications at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "NASA provides an up-close look at how the agency explores the secrets of the universe for the benefit of all by ensuring content is easily accessible and widely available to the public." In addition to the FAST channel, NASA+ is available to download without a subscription on most major platforms via the NASA App on iOS and Android mobile and tablet devices, as well as streaming media players like Roku, Apple TV, and Fire TV.
