Doo-Dah Diner owners sell as they face health challenge

Yahoo2 days ago

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — One of Wichita's more popular restaurants is changing hands as the owners deal with health challenges. Founders Patrick and Timirie Shibley decided to sell the diner due to chef Patrick's stage 4 prostate cancer.
The new owners will be long-time customers Jeff and Jay Miller and their partner, Pat Reilly.
The transfer of ownership will happen on Monday, June 16, the day after the restaurant hosts a Father's Day Feast of Kings buffet on Sunday, June 15.
On Saturday, June 14, there will be a 'Shibley Sendoff.' Customers are invited for a special buffet spread. Guests are encouraged to drop by for a hug and to share well-wishes along with their favorite Doo-Dah Diner memories with the Shibleys.
Complete closure of I-135 in north Wichita
The Shibleys opened Doo-Dah Diner in 2012. It quickly developed a strong following for its made-from-scratch breakfast and lunch dishes, its customer service, and its retro vibe.
'Doo-Dah Diner isn't just a restaurant – it is an extension of who we are,' Patrick said in a news release. 'Every dish is rooted in love, every detail mattered, and nothing made us happier than watching someone's eyes light up with the first bite. That joy – that connection – is why we worked so hard. Pleasing people wasn't a goal. It was the reason we opened the doors every morning for 12 years.'
'We packed a lifetime of memories into the 13 years we owned this treasure,' Timirie said. 'Our moms sat together in a booth and rolled silverware while telling stories. Our daughters literally grew up working in the restaurant. I even hired my ex-husband to help manage the front of house.'
The future owners, Jeff and Jay Miller and their partner Pat Reilly, also own and operate the three Wichita-area Five Guys Burgers & Fries restaurants.
'We are deeply honored to continue Patrick and Timirie's vision for Doo-Dah Diner,' Jeff Miller said. 'The diner is a place that means so much to so many people, including us. We are committed to preserving the warmth, the flavor, and the atmosphere that everyone loves about Doo-Dah. We've been in the restaurant training under Patrick and Timirie for the past several weeks so that the ownership transition will be seamless.'
The diner has also made news for all the celebrities who stop in when they visit town, including actors Harrison Ford and Henry Winkler, Long Island Medium Theresa Caputo, ESPN play-by-play broadcasters, and traveling artists with Music Theatre Wichita.
'This diner isn't just a restaurant – it's a gathering place, and we can't wait to continue that tradition,' Jay Miller said.
The Shibleys plan to do some traveling and connect with loved ones as they 'De-Doo-Dah' their lives.
They want to start a podcast for friends and fans to follow their post-diner adventures. Look for @doodahmom on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.
Timirie will continue her DooDads permanent jewelry business that she and long-time diner employee Laura Shoemake have operated for nearly three years. Look for @doodadsict on social media.

22-Year-Old Dies from Peanut Allergy Days After Graduation: 'Had His Whole Life Ahead of Him'

A 22-year-old has died from a peanut allergy just days after graduating from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in communication studies, per NBC-affiliated station WJAR Timothy "Timmy" Howard suffered a severe anaphylactic reaction, his family confirmed, sharing an emotional tribute "We just celebrated his college graduation and he had his whole life ahead of him," Timmy's mom, Patty Howard, wrote on FacebookA 22-year-old's family has shared a heartbreaking tribute after he died from a peanut allergy just days after his graduation. Timothy "Timmy" Howard died on May 24 after suffering a severe anaphylactic reaction, just days after he graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in communication studies, per NBC-affiliated station WJAR. Timmy's mom, Patty Howard, told the outlet, 'A positive, upbeat, kind, quiet soul. He was on the cusp of living his life.' Patty added of her son in a Facebook post on May 25, "We just celebrated his college graduation and he had his whole life ahead of him. Our hearts are broken and we now have joined a club no one wants to be apart of." "Please hug your children a little tighter today, don't sweat the small stuff and spread kindness to this world," she wrote, alongside multiple photos. Timmy's family revealed he had eaten a late-night snack at home that had been contaminated, per WJAR. His father, Tim Howard, said, 'He came in and woke us up and said that he couldn't breathe. At that point, it unfolded very quickly,' the outlet reported. The family administered Timmy's EpiPen and called 911, but it was too late, the station stated. In a Facebook post, Patty confirmed Timmy's college frat brothers had "started a in loving memory fundraiser page to spread education, food allergy awareness and advancing anaphylaxis research and treatment options," sharing a link to the Give A Hand page, which is raising money for the Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE) organization. "Timmy was just beginning what promised to be a remarkable journey in life," a description on the page read. "He was driven, kind, and deeply loved by family, friends, and everyone who had the joy of knowing him. He had so much ahead of him, and he approached life with a rare kind of kindness and light." "He truly was one of the good ones—gentle, thoughtful, and full of love for others. His unexpected passing has left a profound void, but we are committed to honoring his memory in a way that brings purpose and change," the post continued. Loved ones insisted that raising money for FARE, would "help prevent other families from facing similar tragedies, and to make the world safer for those living with life-threatening allergies," saying it's what they believe, "Timmy would have wanted." "It is not goodbye forever it is until we meet again! We will always love our Timmy," Patty concluded in her Facebook post. The page had raised over $25,500 as of Thursday, June 5. PEOPLE has reached out to Patty Howard for a tribute but did not immediately hear back. Read the original article on People

Posts falsely claim IMF ranked Nigeria as fourth fastest-growing economy in 2025

'BREAKING: Nigeria ranked as the 4th fastest growing economy in the world by IMF reports,' read a post shared on Instagram and liked more than 400 times. The post, dated April 30, 2025, includes a graphic charting the economic growth projections of various countries, including India, China, the United States and the United Kingdom. The data in the chart, titled 'Fastest Growing Economies in 2025' and featuring the logo for an entity called 'Trade Brains', is credited to the IMF. The chart shows the projected growth rate of the gross domestic product (GDP) – a key measure of economic performance – of 12 countries in descending order, with India the highest at 6.2 percent. Nigeria appears in fourth place with projected GDP growth of 3 percent. The same graphic has also appeared in dozens of other posts on Instagram and Facebook, including a verified account belonging to Nigeria's National Orientation Agency. However, the claim that the IMF has projected Nigeria's economy will be the fourth fastest-growing economy in the world is false. AFP Fact Check traced the chart's source to the Instagram page of Trade Brains, an Indian financial news blog. The Trade Brains post, published on April 27, 2025, poses the question: 'Can Indian GDP reach new heights?' It cites IMF projections, which are released in a biannual report called the World Economic Outlook. The latest version of the report, which covers 191 countries, was published in April 2025 (archived here). In the report, the IMF projects Nigeria's economy will grow by 3 percent in 2025. This is correctly depicted in the chart by Trade Brains, as are the figures listed for the other 11 countries. However, the Trade Brains graphic represents a tiny sample of the IMF's global GDP projections and gives the misleading impression that India tops the pile. In fact, it predicts that the economies of several dozen countries will grow faster than India and Nigeria (archived here). These include Libya (17.3 percent), with the biggest growth, followed by Guyana (10.3 percent), Senegal (8.4 percent), Guinea (7 percent) and Rwanda (7 percent). This growth is calculated in percentage of the country's GDP, not in overall monetary amounts. In 2023, Tinubu declared an end to the petrol subsidy on his first day in office and freed up the naira currency, changes that government officials and analysts say will revive the economy and attract investors. Meanwhile, the population is suffering the harsh effects of these policies, which have set inflation at a three-decade high while the cost of living has soared (archived here). AFP Fact Check previously debunked claims about Nigeria's relationship with the IMF here, including one that Nigeria is now debt-free.

It's cheaper to rent than buy in Columbus — and it's not even close

It's much cheaper to rent than buy a home Columbus — and these days, the comparison isn't even close. Driving the news: Rents have tapered nationwide due to an influx of newly built apartments hitting the market. But home-buying costs continue to spike. Follow the money: Columbus-area buyers have to earn almost $38,000 more a year than renters to afford their monthly housing payments, according to a recent Redfin report. That gap has ballooned significantly post-pandemic — it was about $10,000 in 2020. The fine print: Redfin's analysis is based on median home prices and rents and assumes a homebuyer or renter spends no more than 30% of their income on monthly payments.
