KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian healthcare companies recorded RM96.18 million in sales during the International Healthcare Week (IHW) 2025, held from July 16 to 18 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec). The event was organised by UK-based event organiser Informa Markets in strategic partnership with the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) and featured over 800 exhibitors and attracted more than 22,000 trade visitors. In a statement today, Matrade said the Malaysia Healthcare Day Forum, held during IHW 2025, brought together various ministries and agencies to showcase the country's healthcare ecosystem, highlighting strengths in medical tourism, pharmaceuticals, regulatory standards, and digital health. The event was officiated by Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, and also present were Matrade chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican and Informa Markets in Asia president and chief executive officer Margaret Ma. Matrade said that 10 Malaysian companies participated under the Malaysia Pavilion, coordinated by the agency, showcasing products ranging from regenerative therapies and diagnostics to wellness supplements and medical disposables. "They successfully generated RM96.18 million in sales, underscoring the event's impact as a high-value platform for international trade and strategic business partnerships in the healthcare sector," it said. Reezal Merican said the initiative has progressed steadily since initial engagements last year, including the inaugural IHW held in Bangkok, driven by ongoing cooperation and development. "Hosting IHW 2025 in Kuala Lumpur marks a transformative leap, as it is not only the largest healthcare trade event in Southeast Asia but also reflects Malaysia's rising stature as a regional healthcare hub," he said. Matrade said that Malaysia's medical device exports grew by 31.6 per cent in 2024 to RM37.03 billion, while pharmaceutical exports increased by four per cent to RM3.04 billion, with key export destinations including the United States, Belgium, Singapore, Germany, and Japan. IHW 2025 also featured four co-located exhibitions, namely CPHI Southeast Asia, WHX Kuala Lumpur, WHX Labs, and Medtec Southeast Asia, along with the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Asia Pacific Conference. A total of 125 conference sessions were held during IHW 2025, focusing on topics such as artificial intelligence in healthcare, pharmaceutical developments, and digital transformation.

Khazanah rolls out dual-track strategy to boost mid-tier firms
KUALA LUMPUR: Khazanah Nasional Bhd is ramping up support for local mid-tier companies (MTCs) through a dual-track strategy under its Dana Impak initiative, combining capacity building with growth capital via private credit and private equity. The initiative aims to benefit over 100 MTCs by strengthening capabilities, improving access to funding and driving innovation-led growth. "Khazanah's private credit strategy under Dana Impak aims to accelerate the growth of Malaysian MTCs with non-dilutive financing solutions," it said in a statement. Khazanah is partnering with Navis Capital Partners, a Kuala Lumpur-based Asean-focused investment firm, and Granite Asia, to provide customised credit solutions that support the growth of local MTCs. Under its private equity track, the sovereign wealth fund is also working with experienced fund managers to help MTCs scale up, enter regional markets, and enhance operations. It also announced a partnership with Malaysian private equity firm Creador, known for helping growth-stage companies expand regionally and unlock performance through value creation. Khazanah managing director Datuk Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir said that through Dana Impak, the fund plays both a catalyst and connector role, addressing gaps in the ecosystem, providing long-term capital where the market falls short, investing in talent, and attracting private investors. He said this requires a whole-of-nation effort to drive innovation and support sustainable growth. "Our focus on levelling up Malaysian MTCs represent our Advancing Malaysia strategy to enhance Malaysia's economic competitiveness and resilience. We are pleased to welcome our partners on this journey to unlock the full potential of Malaysian MTCs," he said.

Govt to review localisation terms for foreign investors in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: The government will review the possibility of strengthening localisation requirements imposed on foreign investors to create a more resilient ecosystem in Malaysia, enabling local companies to benefit from spillover effects. Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Liew Chin Tong, said the move aims to ensure that micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) benefit not only from new domestic and foreign investments, but also from efforts to grow Malaysian companies into multinational corporations (MNCs). 'There needs to be a shift in mindset, as MSMEs and smaller firms have traditionally been seen only as support players to large foreign MNCs. 'The new approach emphasises the capabilities and potential of Malaysian companies to become technology-based MNCs that can play significant roles on the global stage,' he said during a question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. He was responding to a question from Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng (BN–Tanjung Piai), who asked about the status and effectiveness of negotiations between the Malaysian Government and the United States (US) regarding the implementation of reciprocal tariffs. Wee also sought assurance from the government that the ongoing period of uncertainty would not adversely affect trade, supply chains, and the SME sector in Malaysia. Liew said the government is confident that the early measures already implemented, along with carefully planned mitigation strategies, will help minimise the negative impact of any reciprocal tariffs imposed by the US on Malaysia. 'The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), through its agency, the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE, is also undertaking mitigation efforts by diversifying Malaysia's export markets. 'This includes exploring new destinations in non-traditional markets and strengthening export networks for Malaysian products, particularly to fast-growing emerging markets in Central Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and ASEAN,' he said. To position Malaysia as a key hub within global supply chains, he said the government is committed to enhancing national resilience by nurturing local technology companies in strategic sectors such as semiconductors. He also noted that the government is committed to transforming local firms from merely being outsourcing manufacturers under the 'Made in Malaysia' label to becoming creators of products 'Made by Malaysia', signifying Malaysian-developed technology. 'MITI, together with the Ministry of Finance, will introduce the New Industrial Investment Framework (NIIF) in the third quarter of this year to attract high-value investments and activities, ensuring that all investments bring tangible benefits such as quality employment for Malaysians and contribute to the development of ecosystems and technology within Malaysian companies,' he added. - Bernama
