Stokes and openers put England on top against India
Ben Stokes' first five-wicket haul in eight years and a dizzying opening partnership gave England much the better of the second day of the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford.Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett flayed some wayward India bowling at a rate of more than five an over in their stand of 166, taking a huge chunk out of India's 358.For Crawley, his 84 on the ground he made his career-highlight 189 against Australia two years ago was a welcome contribution. Duckett, the premier opener in the world, crunched 94.Though they fell in the space of two overs, Ollie Pope and Joe Root were able to take England to 225-2, 133 behind.Stokes took three of the six India wickets to fall on Thursday to end with 5-72, while Jofra Archer continued his comeback with 3-73.England were superb with the ball, though they were partly held up by the bravery of Rishabh Pant.Pant retired on day one with a suspected broken foot after being struck by Chris Woakes. In scenes of high drama, he hobbled down the stairs to resume his innings on 37 and nudged his way to 54 before Archer spectacularly uprooted his off stump.Pant is not keeping wicket and India are yet to confirm his injury. It seems likely he will bat in the second innings, when the tourists look set for a battle to stay in the series.
Pant bravery fails to halt England surge
This day had a bit of everything, helped by conditions that gave something to bowlers and batters alike.England were excellent and a little luckless with the ball, led by the rejuvenated Stokes. Pant's hobble down the dressing-room steps produced a moment of pure theatre, then the way the home openers climbed into the India bowling was freewheeling Bazball. At the end of it all, England have a platform from which they can win the series with a match to spare.Pant's return was as remarkable as it was unexpected. After a scan overnight, he arrived at the ground in a protective boot. Still, he was seen in the dressing room wearing his whites and, when Shardul Thakur became the second wicket of the day to fall, Pant limped to the middle.Despite an understandable lack of foot movement, he faced 27 balls and even heaved Archer for six. India added 35 valuable runs while he was at the crease.Only two teams have made more than India's 358 batting first in a Test on this ground and gone on to lose, so their total looked competitive until England tucked in.

Premier League side eye six more signings ahead of new season
Everton are reportedly interested in signing Southampton's Tyler Dibling, with a £27m bid for the winger already rejected. David Moyes is seeking to make six more signings to strengthen Everton's squad, particularly after the departure of wingers Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom. Dibling, an England Under-21 international, had a breakthrough season for Southampton, scoring four goals in 38 appearances. Despite Southampton previously valuing Dibling at £100m, their relegation to the Championship could lead to further player sales. Everton have so far completed three signings this summer: goalkeeper Mark Travers, forward Thierno Barry, and midfielder Charly Alcaraz.

Doomed 105-year-old football club could go out of business in days
Morecambe Football Club faces imminent closure, with prospective buyers stating it will go out of business on Monday without immediate action. Panjab Warriors, the prospective buyers, have urged current owner Jason Whittingham to sign the deal to allow the takeover to proceed and save the club. The club's academy is set to cease operations by the end of the week, and the first team has already halted activities due to lapsed insurance. Morecambe's membership with the National League has been suspended, and the club remains under embargo ahead of the upcoming season. Panjab Warriors, supported by a minority shareholders action group, are ready to complete the acquisition to preserve the club's 105-year legacy.

Man United 'join the hunt to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma from PSG'... but 'face hurdle in race for goalkeeper's signature'
Manchester United have reportedly made an enquiry to Paris Saint-Germain about the availability of Gianluigi Donnarumma but a deal is seemingly improbable. Andre Onana has been the No 1 goalkeeper at Old Trafford for the past two seasons, following his £47.1million arrival from Inter Milan in July 2023. Since moving to Manchester, Onana — whose last ever game for Inter was in the UEFA Champions League final — has seen his stock fall significantly. A string of high-profile errors have led to calls for United to replace the 29-year-old, with United understood to interested in Donnarumma, 26. Donnarumma has just one year left to run on his current contract with PSG, where he has spent the past four seasons. Despite this, the Italian No 1 would likely still command a hefty transfer fee, not to mention wages well in excess of Onana's. According to journalist Marc Mechenoua, United are unlikely to pursue their interest in Donnarumma any further unless they are first able to raise funds and lower their wage bill by moving on several high-earners. Mechenoua also claims that Chelsea have contacted PSG to ask what it might take to prise Donnarumma away from Paris this summer. More to follow.
