Vazquez to leave Real Madrid
London
Lucas Vazquez has announced he is leaving Real Madrid.
The 34-year-old right-sided player has spent almost his entire career at Real, having joined the club's academy at the age of 16.
Following a loan spell with Espanyol, Vazquez made his Real debut in September 2015 and has gone on to make 402 appearances for the club over 10 seasons, winning 23 trophies, including five Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns.
Vazquez's final outing came as a substitute during their 4-0 Club World Cup defeat to Paris SaintGermain earlier this month and he revealed on Wednesday he will be leaving the club.
'Dear Madristas, it's been nearly two decades since I arrived at Valdebebas as a 16-year-old full of dreams and excitement to wear this shirt,' he said in a post on Instagram.
'Every step along the way has been a gift and over time, Madrid became my home. We've lived unforgettable nights together, celebrated 23 titles and created memories that will stay with me forever.
'From the bottom of my heart thank you to the president, the board, the staff, my coaches, my team-mates and above all to the fans. You pushed me to always give that little bit more.
'Today, after more than 400 matches, it's time to say goodbye to the club of my life. But I leave with peace of mind knowing I gave it my all.' Real said farewell ceremony will be held for Vazquez on July 17.
President Florentino Perez said: 'Lucas Vazquez represents in an exemplary way the values of Real Madrid, which has made him one of the most loved players by our fans.
'The figure of Lucas Vazquez symbolizes the hard work, perseverance, humility, and winning spirit that are essential for success in this shirt.
'He is a player who has the affection and recognition of all Madridistas. Real Madrid is and always will be his home.'

Rory McIlroy switches focus to being at top form for Ryder Cup
London: Rory McIlroy is resetting his focus and his schedule in order to be on top form for Europe's defence of the Ryder Cup. Finishing a distant seventh to Open champion and world number one Scottie Scheffler was not how the Northern Irishman wanted to end his major season, especially on home soil at Royal Portrush. But having shown he is over the blip he encountered after his Masters win, which completed the career Grand Slam in April, the 36-year-old is keen to save his best for Bethpage in New York this September. He still has the FedEx Cup play-offs to come in August but his real motivation comes the following month and that is why he will not be playing much as he looks to retain his sharpness. 'I feel like being back in Europe for a bit was a nice reset,' said McIlroy. 'I feel like I'm getting back to where I want to be and we've still got a lot of golf left this year with obviously Ryder Cup being the big one in there in September. II don't want to play too much leading up to that because I want to be fresh. I'll reflect on what's been already a good year and start to get myself ready for that run up to the Ryder Cup.' Mikel Arteta defends Arsenal's handling of Partey's departure
PA Media/dpa London Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has backed the club's handling of former midfielder Thomas Partey's departure, following the arrest of the 32-year-old on suspicion of rape and sexual assault. Partey left the Emirates at the end of June after he was not offered a new contract by the club, days before he was charged by police for the alleged offences which took place between 2021 and 2022. He is due to appear before magistrates on August 5. The club released a statement on July 4, the day of Partey's arrest, saying: 'The player's contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings the club is unable to comment on the case.' Asked on the club's pre-season tour of Singapore whether the allegations and impending police action formed part of the decision not to renew the Ghana international's contract, Arteta said: 'The club was very clear in its statement. There are a lot of legal matters that are very complicated so I cannot comment on any of that.' Asked whether he felt confident the club had followed the proper processes, he said: '100%, yes.' The Gunners continue to be linked with a move for Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres who scored 54 goals in all competitions last season. Arteta's side suffered last season from a lack of options in attack with injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz meaning midfielder Mikel Merino was pressed into service as emergency for part of the campaign. On the club's hopes of signing Sweden international Gyokeres, Arteta said: 'I cannot comment on any player who is not part of our group yet. When we have something concrete to offer in any case to any player we will do that. 'There's still a long time in the window and we are seeking still, in terms of numbers, we are short and we have to improve the depth and quality of the squad. 'We are constantly looking in the market. Until that happens, focus on the players we have and focus on them and I'm very pleased with what I have seen in the last 10-15 days.' Arsenal are in the Far East for three fixtures against AC Milan, Newcastle and Tottenham over the coming 10 days ahead of the new Premier League season which begins on August 15. They have made four summer signings so far as they look to end a run of three consecutive runners-up finishes and end a 22-year wait for the title with 26-year-old midfielder Martin Zubimendi the star buy so far at £55 million ($73.9 million).

Rahm motivated to try and match Open champion Scheffler
PA Media/dpa London Two-time major winner Jon Rahm has been inspired by Scottie Scheffler's dominance over the last few years and is motivated to try to catch and match the world number one. After finishing seven shots behind the Claret Jug winner - who claimed his fourth major at Royal Portrush - home favourite and closest rival, on paper at least, Rory McIlroy had said Scheffler had set the bar for everyone else. High praise indeed from the reigning Masters champion and newest member of the elite career Grand Slam club, of which Scheffler could join when next year's US Open comes around. It is a feeling replicated throughout golf with rivals saying exactly the same thing and comparisons now starting to be drawn with the dominance previously enjoyed by 15-time major winner Tiger Woods. 'Very few players have been able to do what he's done. He's won three majors in three years, won nine times last season (including the Masters and Olympic gold), and he keeps going on. He's doing what everybody wants to do,' said Rahm.
