Police: Passenger dies Sunday in Union Township crash
A driver was seriously injured and his passenger died after a single-vehicle crash Sunday morning in Union Township when a vehicle struck a building, police said.
Deputies from the Porter County Sheriff's Department were called around 7:05 a.m. May 18 for a report of a single-vehicle crash with injuries at the intersection of Ind. 130 and Park Avenue.
Police found a 1994 Nissan Altima had struck a building near the intersection and the driver and passenger had to be extricated, according to a release from Sgt. Ben McFalls, public information officer for the sheriff's department.
The male driver was flown to the University of Chicago Medicine in Chicago for his injuries and the female passenger later died after being transported to a hospital in Lake County; the Lake County Coroner's Office is handling that report and additional information was not immediately available.
An initial investigation shows the car is believed to have been traveling westbound on Ind. 130 when it went off the roadway for an unknown reason and struck a building at the intersection with Park Avenue.
Porter County Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating.

Warren man pleads not guilty to charges in crash that injured woman
WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) — A Warren man was arraigned on charges stemming from a December crash that sent an 18-year-old woman to the hospital with injuries. Dennis Currey Jr., 23, is charged with OVI and aggravated vehicular assault. According to a report from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Currey was driving a 2009 Nissan Altima that crashed into the back end of a 2010 Honda Civic, driven by an 18-year-old woman from Southington. The report states that both vehicles were traveling northbound on state Route 11 in Liberty Township on Dec. 26 when the crash occurred. The force of the crash pushed the Civic into the median, and the driver was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center with what was reported as suspected serious injuries. The Highway Patrol's report states that Currey's blood-alcohol content was .161, double the legal driving limit of .08. A Trumbull County grand jury returned an indictment in the case last month. Currey pleaded not guilty to the charges in Trumbull County Court of Common Pleas on Wednesday, and bond was set at $5,000. Currey is scheduled to appear in court again on July 30. Driver arrested after crash injures 3 children at lemonade stand in Burke County
BURKE COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A 24-year-old woman has been charged after a crash sent a vehicle off the road and into three young girls who were running a lemonade stand. The accident happened around 1:20 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, on Conley Road near Arthur Mull Road, just south of Morganton. According to the NC State Highway Patrol, Haley Erin McCorkle, of Hickory, was trying to turn left out of a driveway in a Chevrolet HHR when she pulled into the path of an oncoming Nissan Altima. The impact pushed the Nissan off the road and into a front yard, right where three girls, ages 7, 8, and 9, had set up a lemonade stand for the afternoon. All three were critically injured and rushed to nearby hospitals. Two were airlifted; the third was taken by ambulance. 'I was scared': Family of Morganton girl hit by car, along with two others, recounts the tragic moment None of the drivers involved were hurt in the crash. McCorkle is now facing charges for failure to yield the right of way, causing serious bodily injury. Troopers said there's no indication that speed or impairment played a role in the crash. Family members of the injured girls said the crash happened in an instant. 'I was right there, and it just happened so fast,' said Elizabeth, the sister of one of the girls. 'I just ran and got my mom.' The girls' parents described the scene as terrifying and heartbreaking. One father said he was traumatized after seeing what happened to the children. Car slams into lemonade stand, critically injuring three girls, NC troopers say
Three girls were critically hurt when a Nissan ran off the road and slammed directly into their front yard lemonade stand, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol. It happened around 1:20 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, near the intersection of Conley and Arthur Mull roads near Morganton, the Highway Patrol said in a June 11 news release. The girls are ages 7, 8 and 9, officials said. Their identities and specifics about their injuries have not been released. 'A 2007 Chevrolet HHR was attempting to turn left from a public driveway and pulled into the path of a 2017 Nissan Altima traveling north on Conley Road,' Master Trooper Christopher Casey reported in the release. 'This collision caused the Nissan to drive off the right side of the roadway and collide with three children. The three female children, who had set up a lemonade stand in the front yard ... were transported to area hospitals in critical condition.' The drivers were not injured, he said. Video recorded at the scene by WSOC shows the lemonade stand was flattened, and the vehicle came to rest in a front yard with damage to its front and back ends. The driver who collided with the lemonade stand has not been charged, officials said. The 24-year-old Hickory woman who was driving the Chevrolet HHR was cited for 'failure to yield right of way causing serious bodily injury,' officials said. The Nissan driver was identified as a 29-year-old woman from Forest City, officials said. 'The initial investigation does not indicate impairment or speed as contributing factors,' the Highway Patrol said. Jessica Tallent, who identified herself as the mother of one of the girls, said she initially thought her daughter was killed, WCNC reported. 'We thought all three of them were dead,' Tallent told the station. 'I was bawling my eyes out.' Her daughter's injuries were not as serious as the other girls, and the child is currently recovering at home, the station said. Morganton is about a 75-mile drive northwest from Charlotte.
