Country Singer Conner Smith Returns to Stage Following Deadly Nashville Crash

Epoch Times5 days ago
Country music artist Conner Smith made his return to the stage on July 31, nearly two months after he was involved in a fatal car accident that resulted in the death of a 77-year-old woman in Nashville.
The 24-year-old singer-songwriter, known for songs such as 'Take It Slow' and 'Creek Will Rise,' performed at the Grand Ole Opry in what he called a deeply personal and faith-centered evening. Smith addressed the audience directly, sharing how the experience has shaped his perspective.

LIV Golf players expect rowdy fans for team championship at The Cardinal in Plymouth

Three weeks before LIV Golf makes its Michigan debut, Cam Smith already knows what to expect. 'I've played enough in the States, I guess, to know that I guess the further north you go, the rowdier the fans get, I think, is about right,' said Smith, the Australian captain of the Ripper GC team. 'So expecting a pretty rowdy week, you know, with the concerts and everything. Hopefully we get some big crowds and it should be a fun week.' During a virtual news conference Wednesday, July 30, Smith was joined by Louis Oosthuizen, the South African captain of Stinger GC, to preview the season-ending LIV Golf Team Championship Michigan, which will be played Aug. 22-24 at The Cardinal at St. John's in Plymouth. Twelve four-player teams will kick off the action the first day. Each match will consist of two singles matches and one alternate-shot foursome match, with three total points up for grabs. The tournament will be run in bracket-style format with quarterfinals scheduled the first day, semifinals the second day and the final on the third day. GOLF STATE: You need to stop sleeping on Michigan golf courses: It's among best states in America The Ryder Cup-style event is yet another difference between the upstart LIV Golf tour, now in its fourth season, and the established PGA Tour. LIV promotes itself as a livelier and more relaxed experience with players allowed to wear shorts and music playing around the course during each round. The deep pockets of Saudi Arabia's Investment Fund, which primarily bankrolls the tour, has spent considerable money to lure former PGA Tour stars and major winners like Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson. Those five players alone reportedly received contracts that totaled nearly $1 billion. The star power plus the carnival-like atmosphere that will feature live performances by "Imagine Dragons" after Saturday's round and by house group "Swedish House Mafia" on Sunday could help attract the 10,000-15,000 fans organizers are expecting. 'It feels like you had a festival,' Oosthuizen said of LIV events. 'It feels like … there's a concert. Some have more than one concert and music. You'll see a lot of younger people. They're enjoying (the tournament) outside of golf, not just the golf. 'And, you know, that's the biggest thing to attract people that (don't) really know anything, a lot, about golf, and getting them to see the top players play the game, and then also enjoy family time with the fan zone and everything else we do outside of just golf. So it is different. It's a different experience.' Contact Carlos Monarrez at and follow him on X @cmonarrez. Busta Rhymes Addresses Former Assistant's Assault Lawsuit: 'It's An Attempted Shake-Down'

Busta Rhymes is denying all claims made by his former assistant, Dashiel Gables, who accused him of assault. In an emailed statement, the rapper said, 'I have been made aware of the claims made by Dashiel Gables, and I completely and categorically deny these allegations.' He also announced plans to file a countersuit. Rhymes — né Trevor Smith Jr. — confirmed that Gables 'assisted' him for 'a very brief period,' but added, 'It did not work out.' He continued, 'Apparently, Dashiel has decided to respond to being let go by manufacturing claims against me in an attempt to attack and damage my reputation. I look forward to proving these allegations false, and am preparing a countersuit, which I am confident will expose this for what it is— an attempted shake-down by a disgruntled former assistant. Ultimately, I am certain the truth will prevail.' Gables (who's also known under the pseudonym Divine) accused the rapper of assault and a hostile work environment. He claimed Smith punched him in the face, causing a swollen eye. He also said he was later fired and blackballed. The civil complaint was filed on Monday (Aug. 4) with Gables claiming the alleged assault stemmed from a January 2025 argument. He said Smith screamed, 'Stay the f**k off your phone,' and then allegedly struck his face twice. 'Defendants constructively terminated plaintiff's employment by repeatedly punching him in the face,' the filing read. Gables was hospitalized and filed a police report. Smith turned himself in to authorities and faced three assault charges. Back then, Gables told the New York Post that his legal team advised him not to speak with the press. He explained, 'Maybe later. Maybe in the future. I can't mess up my case, bro. It's just not going to be worth it. An article in the paper as opposed to a six or seven-million-dollar settlement? I'm not risking it, sorry.' Gables claimed he experienced abuse routinely while working for the rapper. He accused Smith of spitting in employees' faces, smacking them on the back of the head and grabbing their clothes. He also alleged that Smith called him a homophobic slur, mocked his poor hearing, and threatened to 'bloody [his] face.' The news comes on the heels of Busta receiving his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
