'If Jasprit Bumrah Is Not There...": Irfan Pathan's Blunt Message To Shubman Gill And Co For 2nd Test

NDTV5 hours ago
As uncertainty looms over Jasprit Bumrah's participation in the second Test against England at Edgbaston, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has thrown his weight behind Akash Deep as the ideal replacement. With India keen on managing Bumrah's workload across the five-match series, Pathan believes Akash Deep's style could prove effective in English conditions. 'If Bumrah is not there, then who should come into the side in his place? Akash Deep, from what's been seen in the nets, seems to be getting into his rhythm. I feel that he is the Shami mould type of bowler,' Pathan said on his YouTube channel. India's bowlers, barring Bumrah, struggled in the first Test at Headingley, where England chased down 371 to win by five wickets despite twin centuries from Rishabh Pant and first-innings hundreds from Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Pathan further highlighted why Akash Deep could make a difference, pointing to his focus on seam and swing rather than hitting the deck like Mohammed Siraj or Prasidh Krishna.
'His straight seam deliveries can trouble the England batters, especially when it comes to late movement. If you are going aggressive, this could be a problem. We will come to Arshdeep, but I think if Bumrah is not playing, then it should be Akash Deep who should come in his place,' he added.
Meanwhile, India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate echoed the management's confidence that the team can hold their own even if Bumrah is rested.
'It is, but we also feel we can go 1-1 or keep the score at 1-0 without Jasprit. Again, that's putting the eggs in the back end of the series. We're going to need him at some stage as well. You've got to decide when you're going to play your strongest suit,' ten Doeschate said, hinting that the decision on Bumrah's inclusion would be taken on match day.

Questions galore: India face last-minute Bumrah call as they mull over second spinner in bid to level England series

India faces crucial decisions for the second Test against England, primarily concerning Jasprit Bumrah's workload and the bowling attack composition. After a first Test defeat, India ponders whether to risk Bumrah or manage him for later matches, while also considering changes to the other pacers and the inclusion of a second spinner. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads There are questions galore for India ahead of the second Test at Edgbaston, starting today, and expectedly almost all of them are about bowlers and bowling biggest question for India is whether to risk playing Jasprit Bumrah or save their most precious -- and injury-prone -- bowler for later Tests. If he sits out, who will replace him? Who else will be replaced, given the other three pacers were ineffective and expensive, and by whom? Will they stick with a lone spinner or add a second, considering the hot weather and a dry Birmingham pitch?A five-Test series, especially away from home, is challenging. Even more so when the home side has edged ahead 1-0 after a thrilling chase on a fifth-day pitch. As a result, while the triumphant England are confident enough to go into the second Test unchanged, defeated India are still pondering over the choices they need to the most important decision they have to make is about Bumrah's workload. Even before India landed in England, it was already decided that he will play on three of the five Tests. India are being cautious about his workload as he could not take the load of five Tests in a row in Australia and suffered a stress fracture in his back that kept him away from cricket for a couple of months, missing the Champions Trophy.'Bumrah is definitely available [for selection]. We are just going to see how to manage his workload in the upcoming Test matches,' captain Shubman Gill said. 'We just thought we would take a final look once we come to the ground and see what kind of combination that we want to go with tomorrow.'Bumrah is a maverick. His presence lifts the potential of the playing XI several notches up. The obsessiveness with which his availability for the second Test has been discussed over the last few days shows how valuable he no matter what anybody likes to believe and tell others, one player doesn't win you a Test match. Even if that player is Bumrah. In the last five overseas Tests, in all of which Bumrah played and took 29 wickets, including three 5-fors, India lost four and drew India take care of other factors that contributed to their loss, they will find it difficult to make a comeback in the series. Top of the list is their catching abilities, but also the negligible contribution from the lower-order – just 5 in first innings and 4 in second by India's No. 8 to 11. In contrast, England's lower order added 72 in the first plan to shore up their batting by favouring Shardul Thakur over better bowlers like Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh backfired badly. Thakur scored just 5 runs in two innings and was trusted to bowl only 16 of the 160 overs India bowled in the match — all other bowlers bowled 40-plus overs bowlers struggled too. Prasidh Krishna (5/220) took as many wickets as Bumrah but leaked too many runs. Mohammed Siraj provided better control but didn't take into the second Test, if India are serious about taking 20 wickets, they need five specialist bowlers. They have options on the bench. Akash Deep can provide both control and swing. Arshdeep Singh can bring a left-armer's angle that's always an Yadav's wrist spin and variety could be an attacking option on a pitch that's dry underneath and is expected to assist spinners in the second half of the Test. There is Washington Sundar, who bowls at a similar pace as Jadeja but turns it in opposite direction. He can also bat, much better than to forget Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was India's second highest run-getter in Australia behind Yashasvi Jaiswal. And unlike, Karun Nair and Sai Sudharsan, he can provide a few overs of seam bowling – a sixth bowling option wouldn't selection for the second Test will reflect not just tactical adjustments, but also whether they've truly learned from their mistakes in the opener.

"Bumrah available to play, final call on combination to be taken": Skipper Gill ahead of 2nd England Test

Birmingham [UK], July 1 (ANI): Ahead of the second Test against England at Birmingham, Indian skipper Shubman Gill said that while pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is available to play, the team will take a final call later ahead of the match after seeing the wicket regarding the combination. He also added that the team is trying to manage Bumrah's workload in the coming games. The second Test will kickstart from Wednesday onwards at Birmingham. India is trailing 0-1 in the series, failing to defend 371 runs at Leeds, despite scoring five centuries while batting. Bumrah, who took a five-wicket haul in the first innings, went wicketless in the second and bowled almost 44 overs. In this series, he will be playing only three Tests. Speaking ahead of the match in the pre-match presser, Gill said, 'Bumrah is definitely available to play. We are trying to find a way to manage his workload. And yes, we are trying to find the right combination where we can take 20 wickets and score runs as well on these kind of wickets. We just thought we are going to have a final look today (on the wicket) once we come to the ground and see what kind of combination that we want to go with tomorrow.' Gill also said that the team was aware of the fact that Bumrah would be playing only three games and had decided on several combinations. 'So, you definitely do miss your best bowler if he is not playing. But I think we had that sorted before the series, who would be playing if he were not playing,' he added. Speaking on the team's ideal combination, the captain said that while the team would like to have batting depth till number seven or eight, having it till number nine will affect the ability to take 20 wickets. 'So, it is about finding the right combination for that particular condition and that particular ground. And I think if we are able to go with four or premier bowlers with maybe a sixth bowling option and then have a batting till seven or eight, I think that would be a good combination for us,' he concluded. India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav. Shubman Gill backs two-spinner theory for 2nd Test: Unusual but it works

India's Test skipper Shubman Gill has hinted at a possible shift in strategy ahead of the second Test against England in Birmingham, supporting the idea of fielding two spinners — an uncommon move in English conditions, but one he believes could pay off given the unusually dry at the pre-match press conference, Gill pointed out that Edgbaston's typically seam-friendly reputation may not hold this time around due to the hot and dry weather sweeping across the England, generally teams don't play with two spinners, but the weather isn't typical and there is very less rain, a lot of heat," Gill said. "So playing an extra spinner won't be a bad option." India were in control for the majority of the first Test in Leeds but failed to close out the game, with Ben Duckett's counter-attacking 149 leading England to a five-wicket win on the final day. Reflecting on that match, Gill believes that including another spinner might have changed the outcome."Even in the previous game, I felt having another spinner could've made the difference since Jaddu bhai (Ravindra Jadeja) was successful in asking questions to the batters and containing runs as well."Gill explained that on flat tracks where the ball stops swinging after the initial overs, spin can be crucial-not necessarily to take wickets but to control the game and create pressure leading into the second new batting-friendly conditions wherein the ball isn't swinging much after 30-40 overs, a spinner can stop the runflow if not pick wickets. That helps the pacers return fresh later on."However, he acknowledged that the decision isn't straightforward and comes with its own risks-particularly if India end up bowling on Day 1 when conditions could still favour seamers."These are difficult calls to take because, if we are going in with an extra spinner, we'd need to think about how to manage the second spinner on day one if we are bowling first."Gill stressed the importance of a well-rounded playing XI and indicated that India would look for a combination that ensures batting depth without compromising bowling versatility."Ideally we would want to have batting depth till seven or eight. It is also important to find the right combination for the particular ground and that particular match," he said."It is important to be consistent against England's batting lineup and bowl in one area-maybe try and make them play in front of the wicket as much as possible."- EndsTune InYou May Also Like
