Behind the Gen Z revival of Y2K fashion and how to sell your old clothes

From Juicy Couture sweat sets and low-rise, bedazzled jeans to chunky belts and baby tees, early 2000s fashion is all the rage again. That potentially makes that old box of clothes in the back of your wardrobe a sitting cash cow.

Generation Z has taken to the
Y2K aesthetic that many millennials cringe at.
Fashion-forward university students and TikTok influencers are flaunting the miniskirts, chunky sandals and other bright, brand-heavy and borderline tacky items they likely bought second-hand.
Jackson Mangum, a 24-year-old tailor in the US state of Oregon, says that while he has distanced himself from Y2K and found his style, his wardrobe still has influences of it, including baggy camo shorts, flared jeans and big, funky sunglasses.
'I'm usually not Y2K, but I appreciate Y2K style. I think it's cool,' says Mangum, who showcases his work on his Instagram account, @wornandtornattire.

'The baggy jeans, different pops of pink and the chrome shades – it's easy to go anywhere and be able to find things that fit into that niche. Throwing it together is easier than throwing together a full vintage outfit.'

Why Asian women are reclaiming tradition with teeth blackening

When Vietnamese-American singer Sailorr's first live performances resurfaced online in late 2024, it attracted a lot of attention: not just for her hypnotic music, but for her distinctive black teeth. 'So I'm not the only one distracted by her mouth?' read a comment liked nearly 2,700 times under a video of one of her performances. Against Instagram's sea of bright-white veneers , Sailorr's dark smile isn't just a fashion statement: publicly practising teeth blackening is a homecoming, a cultural reclamation that she and other artists of Asian descent, including Molly Santana and Qui Yasuka, have been reviving in recent years. A new take on a centuries-old practice Teeth aren't a new canvas for self-expression. We've become used to seeing grills and gems everywhere since about the 1980s – the trend owes much to hip-hop culture's rich influence on fashion and music. Advertisement While less known globally, Asia's traditions of dental adornment are no less culturally profound. Teeth blackening, in particular, has been practised for centuries and was regarded as a rite of passage, a marker of beauty, adulthood and refinement across the region, especially in Vietnam and Japan. In Japan, aristocrats stained their teeth with iron filings and vinegar in a practice called ohaguro from the 11th to 19th centuries. In Vietnam, nhuộm răng dates back to the Hùng King era (2879-258 BC) and made use of betel, charcoal and beeswax. In both cases, the imposition of Western beauty standards during colonial times nearly erased the practice throughout the region, explains Dr Aida Yuen Wong, professor of art history at Brandeis University. 'In Vietnam, French colonial rule engendered new beauty standards. And though Japan was never colonised, authorities banned the practice in alignment with Western ideals, driven by a desire to avoid appearing as uncivilised.' Shunned into near extinction, teeth blackening was mostly preserved by the elders – until artists like Sailorr, and Japanese-American creatives Sukii Baby and Molly Santana, reclaimed the practice and inspired a new generation of women. Beauty trend and identity politics 'I'm Vietnamese-American, so I knew of teeth blackening,' says aspiring fashion designer Mou Isabel Phung. 'But when I saw Sailorr and Sukii Baby mixing such an old traditional practice into modern fashion, I knew I wanted to do it as well.'

During her audition for the part of Trudi Fraser, Tarantino handed her all 21 pages of the scene and gave her an overview of the character. Apollo 13 commander James Lovell dies at 97

James Lovell, the pioneering US astronaut whose two dramatic missions to the moon included Apollo 13, the nearly disastrous trip that captivated the world and decades later inspired a triumphant Hollywood blockbuster, has died. He was 97. Advertisement He died on August 7 in Lake Forest, Illinois, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration announced, without citing a cause. A member of Nasa's second astronaut class, Lovell made history repeatedly during the heyday of the US space programme, notching the first rendezvous with a crewed spacecraft; the longest American space flight of the 1960s, in Gemini 7; and the first lunar mission, the Apollo 8 orbital journey that captured the iconic image of a blue-and-white Earth suspended against lonely, black emptiness. His two trips during the Gemini programme and two more in Apollo capsules made him the first person to fly into space on four separate occasions and the first to fly twice to the moon. His 29-plus days in space were the most of any American until the shuttle began roaring into low Earth orbit in the 1980s. Advertisement The most riveting moments of Lovell's astronaut career came during the Apollo 13 accident, a four-day drama that unspooled while Nasa worked feverishly to bring the three-man crew home and a global audience pondered the awful prospect that they might be stranded on a one-way trip. The Apollo 13 mission 'was a disappointment, it was a failure', Lovell said in a 2002 interview with Charlie Rose.
