Utkal univ seminar throws light on Gangua river's pollution

Bhubaneswar: Utkal University has raised concern about the deteriorating condition of Gangua river. At a seminar organised by the history department on Saturday, experts and activists came together to discuss the river's alarming pollution levels and chart a roadmap for action.
The university decided to host a three-day exhibition featuring maps, photographs, historical records and documentary videos to deepen public understanding of the river's heritage and current crisis.
"Gangua river was once a sacred waterway flowing through Bhubaneswar, but now it has become a highly polluted waterway. The university's history department has resolved to take a leading role in research, documentation and awareness," said Sanjay Acharya, in-charge head of the history department at Utkal University.

ormer vice-chancellor Binayak Rath presented his extensive research on the river and made an urgent call to address its ecological and public health crisis. Rath recounted his discovery of a neglected lake near the university entrance, which turned out to be a feeder stream to Gangua. "I traced 21 such streams, originating from areas like Bharatpur sanctuary and Ekamra Kanan lake, feeding the river," Rath said.
He compiled his recent book, "Gangua: The Heritage River of Ekamrakhetra," based on the findings of his research.
"We are planning to host a three-day exhibition on the Gangua river with the help of the university. The event will feature detailed maps, photographs, historical references and documentary videos to provide a comprehensive understanding of the river's past, present, and endangered future," said Rath.
The seminar concluded with an urgent need for collaboration among BMC, water management organisations, corporates and academic institutions to restore the river.

Pune: One worker was killed and three others suffered injuries after they got trapped under a 25-foot heap of mud while laying an underground drainage line of the Mula-Mutha river pollution abatement project at Khadakwasla, behind the Nanded City compound wall, around 6pm on Monday. The Nanded City police identified the deceased worker as Kaniram Prajapati (55), resident of a workers' camp in Wadgaon Budruk. " Gaikar said the soil of the heap of mud loosened while carrying out the excavation work and fell on four workers, leaving them trapped under it. One of them managed to come out of the heap of mud on his own. Personnel from the PMC and the PMRDA (Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority) fire brigade, and Pune disaster management authority removed the heap of mud with spades and earthenware, and rescued two other workers. PMRDA fire officer Sujit Patil said it took considerable time to clear the heap of mud and rescue the fourth worker. Now, Goa govt introduces bill to regularise houses on comunidade land
Panaji: A proposed amendment to the Goa Legislative Diploma No. 2070 to to regularise unauthorised dwelling houses constructed on comunidade land before Feb 28, 2014 was approved by the cabinet on Monday and introduced in the legislative assembly later in the day. According to the bill, the area eligible for regularisation is the plinth of the dwelling house plus two metres on all sides, subject to a maximum of 300sqm. If an application for regularisation is not filed or is rejected, the administrator of comunidades shall initiate proceedings for removal of the structure. Regularisation is not permissible on agricultural tenant's land as described under the Agricultural Tenancy Act, protected forests, wildlife sanctuaries, Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) if constructed after Feb 19, 1991, no-development zones, eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) I, khazans, road setbacks or right-of-way, filled water bodies or natural water channels, and land other than cultivable areas or orchards in ESZ II. Regularisation is permissible if the land falls under settlement, institutional, industrial, cultivable or orchard zones. Any excess land must be surrendered to the comunidade through the administrator, and possession of the excess land must be taken before the final order is issued. The proposed amendment empowers an officer not below the rank of a senior scale officer of the Goa Civil Service, to issue orders for regularisation of such unauthorised dwellings upon receiving from the applicant an application, compensation to be paid to the comunidade concerned, and the explicit consent of the comunidade to regularise the land in question. An applicant must be a landless person who constructed a dwelling house before Feb 28, 2014, on land belonging to the comunidade without such land being lawfully granted to him/her. The applicant must have been a resident of Goa for at least 15 years prior to Feb 28, 2014. In case of his/her death, a family member may apply, but this does not include a person or kin who owns a plot of land, a house, flat, or apartment, or an undivided share in ancestral property which, on the date of making an application, was separately allotted to him/her.

Bodies of six Odia workers brought back to their villages
Berhampur: Heartbreaking scenes unfolded in four villages across Ganjam district as the bodies of six Odia workers, who lost their lives in a granite quarry accident in Andhra Pradesh, were brought to their respective villages for the last rites on Monday. The accident took place on Sunday when a portion of rock collapsed at a quarry near Ballikurava in Andhra Pradesh's Bapatla district, claiming the lives of six Odia migrant workers. The deceased included two workers each from Digapahandi and Dharakote blocks in Ganjam district, and two others from Mohana block in Gajapati district. Eight other workers, mostly Odias, sustained injuries in the incident. The Ganjam district administration facilitated the transportation of the bodies from Digapahandi to their home villages. Transport minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena and fisheries and animal resources minister Gokulaananda Mallick visited the grieving families to offer their condolences. The victims were identified as Danda Badatya, 48, from Chasa Nimakhandi, Banamali Behera, 30, from Bangarda in Digapahandi block, Santosh Gouda, 36, from Bada Kashei, and Musa Jena, 43, from Bahadaguda in Dharakote block.
