‘It's not tokenistic': how The Assembly became an international hit

The Guardian14-06-2025
It is an interview like no other. One which has seen Emmanuel Macron confronted over whether it was right to marry his former teacher and Danny Dyer probed about whether he has a joint bank account with his wife. Celebrities have been caught off guard, or left sobbing and laughing in equal measure.
The Assembly, in which an audience of autistic, neurodivergent and learning disabled people ask unpredictable, probing and often remarkably direct questions of a celebrity, has won plaudits and rave reviews since launching in 2022. It has now become an international phenomenon.
The show, which originated in France, had more international commissions than the all-conquering reality hit The Traitors last year. The format has already been commissioned across 19 countries, according to an industry report by K7 Media. Ten new versions have already been confirmed.
Unusually for a new European format, The Assembly is already making its mark in Asia: it will launch in Singapore in January. It is heading into its fourth series in France and has been a hit in Norway, Australia and Denmark – succeeding on public and private broadcasters.
Its producers say the authenticity of the show has created its universal appeal – while the clippable content is perfect for a social media age in which broadcasters are desperate to reach younger audiences glued to their feeds.
Stu Richards, creative director of the programme's UK producers Rockerdale Studios, said it was crucial the show was billed as having broad appeal, rather than as a programme highlighting neurodiversity. 'It's not just representation for the sake of it – it's not tokenistic,' he said. 'We see this as mainstream entertainment.'
The stripped-back look of the show – shot over three hours in natural light with the camera crew in full view – adds to the sense that viewers are getting an unfiltered experience. 'There's an honesty that you just don't get in other TV shows,' said Richards.
'It has non-culturally specific values like honesty and by extension, empathy. In shows with disabled people, you as a viewer are almost always asked to be sympathetic towards the people you're seeing. You're rarely asked to empathise. In this show, our cast have the authorship, they have the agency.'
Richards said he was sold on the idea immediately after seeing Macron asked bluntly about the propriety of his marital relationship. 'When I saw that question, I thought: this is something unlike any interview format I've seen,' he said. 'We've had interview formats in the past, like Ali G, where people have tried to ask comedically funny questions. But the president of France asked about the age gap with his older wife? Boom, yes. I'm completely in.'
For broadcasters desperate to reach new audiences to be found on social media, the format also lends itself to short clips, as an unsuspecting celebrity responds to a left-field question. Several of such clips, featuring Macron, Michael Sheen and the Game of Thrones actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in the Danish edition, have gone viral.
'That's the mother load for so many commissioners and broadcasters at the moment,' said Michelle Singer, Rockerdale's director of production.
Coster-Waldau broke down when talking about the death of his alcoholic father. In the Australian edition, the Jurassic Park actor Sam Neill was similarly floored when asked about the best lesson he had learned from his parents.

The team distributing the show had a queue of potential takers after it aired in France. They said the dynamic between the cast and the interviewee meant it was unlike other chatshows or political programmes. 'It's the authenticity,' said Arnaud Renard, co-founder of Can't Stop Media, the programme's distributor. 'Everybody gets it. Everybody understands it's a show where we have people that are going to ask unexpected questions – but without bad feelings. We're not trying to trick people.'
Despite the show's international success, it has had an unusual journey in the UK. A pilot featuring Sheen was made for the BBC, but the corporation is said to have concluded it did not have the funds to make a series. It has since found success on ITV, where the first series featured David Tennant, Jade Thirlwall, Gary Lineker and Dyer – who, among other things, was asked how much he was paid for presenting the Saturday night gameshow The Wall (about £100,000).
Bigger names have been booked for follow-up series overseas, though producers are sworn to secrecy. To take it to the next level in the UK, fans are hoping a British politician might be brave enough to enter The Assembly should a second series materialise.
'It's interesting that the idea for this programme grew from the grilling of Emmanuel Macron.' said Tim Nicholls, assistant director of policy, research and strategy at the National Autistic Society. 'Wouldn't it be great if we could see British politicians subjected to the same scrutiny by autistic interviewers?'

Brooklyn Beckham's NEW inner circle unveiled at vow renewal... as he turns his back on family and friends in favour of wife Nicola Peltz's brothers, glam squad and acting pals

Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola's Peltz's vow renewal was a glamorous affair packed with family, fashion and friends earlier this month. Yet as more pictures of both the big day and the after-party come to light, it is becoming increasingly more apparent that the festivities were fairly one-sided - with most of the guestlist comprising Brooklyn's post-Nicola peers and pals. The most glaring absence came from Brooklyn's family - mum Victoria, 51, dad David, 50, brothers Romeo, 22, Cruz, 20 and his sister Harper, 14 - due to the ongoing feud rumbling among the group, who were not informed of the vow renewal. While his family are holidaying in St Tropez, Brooklyn partied the night away at his wife's family's estate in Westchester County on August 2, with Nicola's family, members of her glam squad, her acting coach and fellow actors. Absent were former members of Brooklyn's entourage - including fellow nepobabies Rocco Richie and Gordon Ramsay 's brood, his brother Romeo's girlfriend Kim Turnbull and yet more superstar offspring in Anais Gallagher. The lack of Brooklyn's side sparked widespread chat on social media, including comments from fans who likened their relationship to that of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle - after the royal turned his back on his family and moved to the US. When Brooklyn and Nicola first tied the knot in 2022, they hosted a three-day Palm Beach extravaganza, which saw 500 guests party in no-expense-spared marquees in front of the ocean - where both families stood front and centre. Fast- forward three years and the change is remarkable, with no sign of the Beckham parents or the siblings Brooklyn held so close to his heart. In their place is the entirety of the Peltz clan - with Nicola's mother Claudia, 70, and her father Nelson, 83, holding all-star roles on the day. At the 2022 festivities, during the Hora - also known as the Jewish wedding chair dance - where the bride and groom are lifted on chairs while guests dance around them in a circle, David was also lifted up on a seat. Brooklyn's brothers acted as his Dior-clad groomsmen at the event although their positions have officially been occupied by the in-laws. Nicola has six brothers, all of whom Brooklyn is fond however he is very close to her brother Diesel, who introduced him to his bride. As well as swapping siblings, it has also been revealed that Brooklyn has shunned some of his old friends - as illustrated by his wedding pictures. Nicola has grown up surrounded by the support of her six brothers, and previously revealed that it was actually her sibling Diesel who introduced her to Brooklyn (the couple are pictured with Nicola's brother Will in 2022) Sources close to the Beckhams previously stated that they have concern that Nicola holds disproportionate sway in her marriage to their son. They said: 'They think Nicola is a bit of a horror but she isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Nicola loves having Brooklyn at her side and she loves him very much. But he is also very useful. 'The wider Beckham family and Brooklyn's friends – many of whom he no longer sees – take the view that he does what Nicola wants. From Beckhams' point of view, it's not nice to watch.' One group shot from the wedding featured a host of guests seemingly known only to Brooklyn via his wife, thanks to their presence in the acting and beauty worlds. One playful shot gave a glimpse into the guestlist, including real estate agent Anthony Barillo, creative branding agency owner Dominic J West, make-up artist Georgi Sandev, 'colourist to the stars' Daniel Moon and Benny Buckley. Creative director and photographer Hunter Moreno, designer Eran Shapov and Ariel Shapov were also in the picture. Nicola has grown up surrounded by the support of her six brothers, and she previously revealed that it was actually her sibling Diesel who introduced her to Brooklyn. 'I actually met Brooklyn like six years ago at Coachella, through one of my brothers; his name is Diesel,' the actress revealed in an interview with Wonderland Magazine in 2022. She recalled how the now-married couple were both with other partners at the time, admitting: 'We really didn't get along. He had a girlfriend and I had a boyfriend, and we just didn't click at all.' 'Diesel was like, "Oh my friend Brooklyn wants to crash at our house", because all my brothers rented a house for Coachella. We barely interacted. We look back at pictures, like group pictures, and I'm with my boyfriend and Brooklyn's in the corner.'

Dani Dyer is all smiles as she's seen for the first time stepping out in London after joining Strictly Come Dancing 2025 line-up

Dani Dyer has been seen for the first time since she was announced as one of the celebrities taking part in this year's Strictly Come Dancing. The Love Island star, 29, was announced as one of the latest celebrity in the line-up on Monday. The following day, Dani was spotted leaving her first promotional interview at a property in north London. The star looked effortlessly stylish in a white vest top paired with blue-and-white striped shorts. She completed the look with black sliders, a pair of black metal-framed sunglasses, and a chic shearling bag. Appearing in high spirits, Dani flashed a smile at the camera as she said goodbye to the production crew before heading to her next location. The daughter of acting legend Danny Dyer, who wed husband Jarrod Bowen this year, shot to fame in 2018 on the ITV2 dating show when she bagged the £50k prize with Jack Fincham. Speaking about taking part in the new series of Strictly, Dani said: 'Getting the opportunity to be on Strictly is the second most amazing thing I've done this year! 'I feel very very blessed and cannot wait to get my dancing shoes on.' She joins a host of stars in the lineup which also includes actress Alex Kingston, 62, former footballer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, 53, and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, 36. Strictly's new series has been hit by a string of scandals in the lead-up to its return, including revelations that the broadcaster had hired a law firm to probe allegations of drug taking by two individuals. One of the stars involved in the drugs probe was also suspected of drinking while working on the show after crew smelt alcohol on their breath. The Sun alleged that it was widely known that the pair, who have not been named, took the Class A substance, and that one of these Strictly performers was known for being a drinker. The publication have now reported that junior members of the team were asked to keep an eye on them during last year's show and to look for signs that they may have been boozing during work hours. Over the weekend, a staffer also claimed they were offered cocaine by one of the show's stars. He told The Sun: 'The main partying is on site at Elstree after filming of the live show has finished. Boozing and drug taking goes on until 3am, sometimes 4am. The smoking area outside is a hive of activity. Cocaine gets taken there'. He went on to claim that drug use was so common on the show, that when he found a suspicious bag of white powder, an unfazed senior producer told him to 'leave it on my desk' as the incident failed to raise even an eyebrow. The staff member also said the show's annual special filmed at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom was an especially 'big party night' full of debauchery. 'I was offered cocaine by a star at an after show party. Lots of people would go back to the hotel. It was a closed-off party, just for the cast and crew. It went on until 5am, even to 6am, it was insane. People were wired and you could see it in their eyes'. A BBC spokesperson told Daily Mail: 'We have clear protocols and policies in place for dealing with any serious complaint raised with us. We would always encourage people to speak to us if they have concerns. It would not be appropriate for us to comment further.' The shock allegations come amid a long period of controversy for the BBC and Strictly over the past year or so. In July last year, more than six months after quitting the show citing 'personal reasons', actress Amanda Abbington accused pro dancer Giovanni Pernice of 'unnecessary, cruel and mean behaviour' during their time dancing together on Strictly. Giovanni rejected the claims immediately, and a BBC investigation ruled in September that her claims of physical aggression and threatening behaviour were not upheld. When BBC bosses published their report into Giovanni's behaviour, it cleared him of the most serious allegations of physical aggression, but upheld verbal bullying and harassment. Complaints of verbal bullying and harassment meant the BBC issued an apology to Amanda, but Giovanni said he was 'pleased the report has not found any evidence of threatening or abusive behaviour'. Elsewhere, the show was plunged into crisis after Welsh opera singer Wynne Evans made a controversial joke during his time preparing for the Strictly tour in January. He used a vile sexual innuendo and was also caught up in a 'wandering hand' incident with dance partner Katya Jones , who seemed to remove his arm from her lower waist on the show. After the BBC launched an investigation into his conduct, bosses decided not to renew his radio contract for his show. The TV star confirmed in May that they will not be renewing his one-year rolling contract following a four-month investigation after the inappropriate comments made during his time on Strictly. Elsewhere, in further scandals for the BBC, Gregg Wallace was recently dismissed from MasterChef after more than 40 complaints against him were upheld following a BBC investigation. While his co-star John Torode was also sacked after two decades over allegations that he used the N-word, which he claims to have 'absolutely no recollection' of. In separate further controversy, it's recently been reported that Naga Munchetty could face an investigation from BBC bosses after she was accused of bullying a junior colleague. The BBC Breakfast host, 50, has been placed 'under review' while bosses consider escalating complaints to a formal investigation, The Sun reports. A source said higher-ups had heard from several colleagues and logged concerns over her 'hard' and 'bullying' behaviour on the breakfast show, as well as her Radio 5 Live show.

Romeo Beckham seen on budget Jet2 flight following his estranged brother Brooklyn's gratuitous show of wealth with lavish vow renewal

Romeo Beckham was spotted on a budget Jet2 flight on Monday, following his estranged brother Brooklyn's gratuitous show of wealth with lavish vow renewal. The footballer, 22, appeared to keep a low profile dressed in a black hoodie and a pair of matching jogging bottoms. He was seen patiently waiting in the queue for the flight at Birmingham Airport, before a fan snapped a picture of him sitting on the plane to France. It comes after the Beckham family reportedly branded Brooklyn and Nicola Peltz's secret vow renewal a 'gratuitous display of obscene wealth'. The couple wed for a second time on August 2 in Westchester County in front of her family, followed by a butterfly-theme afterparty, with the Beckham clan nowhere in sight at either event. The lack of his family's presence is the latest sign Brooklyn, 26, and Nicola, 30, have washed their hands with his family. Now, sources close to the Beckhams claim the family didn't understand the need for Brooklyn and Nicola to renew their vows just three years after tying the knot in 2022. A source told The Sun: 'They would understand if it was, say, 10 years down the line - maybe even five. But three?! It seems like quite a gratuitous display of obscene wealth. 'Also, if Brooklyn wanted to create a really cute memory, why couldn't he have just let his family know their plans first? 'To be honest, although there have been moments of rapprochement, this hostility dates back to 2021, around six months before the original wedding. 'The dynamics have just never really gelled. Of course David and Victoria want Brooklyn to be happy and clearly he is wildly in love still, but a lot of people have been hurt. It is a sad situation and everyone fears there is no way back now. It is done.' Daily Mail has contacted the Peltz and Beckham's representatives for comment. Brooklyn's family's feelings towards their vow renewal could suggest why none of his relatives were on the invite list. However, Victoria, David and their children Romeo, 22, Cruz, 20, and Harper, 14, were said to have only found out about Brooklyn's big day after reading about it on a US website. It's a stark contrast to Nicola's family, who had key roles at the second wedding, with her father Nelson, 83, officiating, wearing her mother Claudia's, 70, vintage wedding gown and letting her parents take centre stage once again at the after party. Their eldest son has become increasingly estranged from the family ever since he snubbed his father's 50th birthday, and now, the family fear it's a final kick in the teeth for the family. A source told The Sun on Monday: 'This was the final kick in the teeth for David and Victoria. Seeing Nelson having such a pivotal role at the ceremony was heartbreaking for David especially. Not one member of the 30-plus extended family knew about the wedding, or were invited. 'His grandparents are devastated too as Brooklyn has always been so close to them.' The source added: 'It feels cruel and spiteful. This is no longer a game. It has gone beyond all that. This is a family who feel they have lost their precious boy - and see no way back. 'Honestly, they are now questioning why he even wants to keep the 'Beckham' surname - will he revert to Peltz? August 2nd 2025 - is this the day Brooklyn formally declared himself no longer a part of the Beckham family? It certainly feels like it.' Brooklyn and Nicola first tied the knot in a lavish £3million ceremony in 2022, when relations first began to sour with his parents in the run-up to the big day. After shunning a dress made by her fashion designer Victoria in favour of a Valentino gown in 2022 - a choice which wasn't well received - Nicola once again snubbed her mother-in-law and wore her mother Claudia's vintage wedding gown. It is a poignant message to Posh and Becks', whom he and Nicola have grown increasingly estranged over recent months. Brooklyn's family's feelings towards their vow renewal could suggest why none of his relatives were on the invite list All the while the Beckhams were said to be upset by the Peltzes in 2022 who they felt were taking over the wedding. And ever since their first big nuptials in April 2022, the two families have not reunited and Nicola has rarely been pictured with the Beckhams. The couple shared the images on Instagram on Monday, alongside the words 'only love.' Nicola wore the same original $1.8mill ring set adding a glinting filter onto the dazzling jewels. They also shared a video of their very casual proposal on TikTok alongside a song by Ysabelle Cuevas alongside the words: 'Lost in your eyes..' Brooklyn described the vow renewal as a 'really beautiful experience' while admitting he is still head-over-heels for his wife. Speaking for the first time about the day, the 26-year-old admitted he'd happily do it 'every single day' if he could.
