Libya suspends Huawei's operations over national security violations

The General Authority for Telecommunications and Informatics announced the suspension of all activities of Chinese company Huawei in Libya, citing violations of national and international laws and the need to safeguard national security. In a statement, the Authority said that Huawei had entered into illegal contracts with unauthorized entities in the country, which it described as a breach of Libya's national security. It added that the company also violated domestic laws granting the Authority exclusive powers to issue licenses and permits in the telecommunications sector. According to the Authority, Huawei further breached international rules and obligations by contravening core principles of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) regarding respect for state sovereignty. The company was also accused of disregarding international standards that require firms to comply with local laws and commercial practices, including the prohibition of contracts outside recognized legal frameworks. The Authority stressed that all Huawei operations in Libya have been halted with immediate effect until the company resolves its status, and that any dealings or contracts concluded outside legally approved channels have been annulled and declared invalid.
