PM Anwar: Govt mulls awarding projects to Koperasi PDRM to boost members returns

THE government is reviewing the best approach to assist Koperasi Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) Berhad through the awarding of suitable projects, rather than the channelling of additional funds, to help increase returns for members, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister said the move would ensure that projects are implemented more quickly and efficiently, while benefiting nearly 100,000 members.
'When a project is approved and awarded by the government, the benefits reach 100,000 people. It makes more sense than providing a direct financial grant.
'… it's better to channel support through projects — better execution, reasonable costs, faster completion and greater efficiency,' he said when opening the 90th Annual Delegates' General Meeting of Koperasi PDRM Berhad here today.
At the same time, Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, called on the cooperative's management to submit a performance report to him and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to identify potential areas for collaboration.
'I will look into how we can cooperate with the Ministry of Finance, and I will instruct the Second Finance Minister and the Treasury secretary-general to explore other avenues we can pursue to ensure that the profits gained by Koperasi PDRM benefit its members,' he said.
Also present were Saifuddin Nasution and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, who is also Koperasi PDRM Berhad president.
Anwar also said the government would explore all possible avenues to ease the cooperative's management burden, including offering a reasonable reduction on the debt for Kolej UNIKOP in Cyberjaya, which is owned by Koperasi PDRM Berhad.
'I don't think we should write off the entire debt, but given the current good performance of the police force and sound management, I believe a reasonable reduction is appropriate,' he said.
Earlier, in his speech, Razarudin had appealed to the government to consider reducing the rent and writing off the 2024 debt for the Kolej UNIKOP premises owed to Cyberview Sdn Bhd.
Razarudin said approval of the request would further support efforts to upgrade the college into a premier police and security university in the Southeast Asian region.
The Prime Minister said Koperasi PDRM Berhad, which represents hundreds of thousands of members, has recently recorded a strong performance, allowing it to provide better returns to its members.
'When the management is good and the governance is sound, the outcomes for its members will naturally improve. This performance has placed Koperasi PDRM among the top cooperatives in the country,' he said.
Anwar also stressed that in efforts to safeguard the welfare of the people, particularly members of the police force, input from the Home Minister, the Inspector-General of Police and the Home Ministry secretary-general is essential.
'We can no longer rely on outdated methods and conditions. The country has recorded impressive achievements, a five per cent growth rate, and, as I announced yesterday, a 3.1 per cent increase in investments in the first quarter of this year, despite the global economic slowdown.
'But the ultimate measure is the people's comfort — their homes, hospitals, schools and cost of living. These are the issues the MADANI Government is addressing,' he said. — BERNAMA

Govt to fast-track first national sepak takraw academy

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has agreed to expedite the establishment of Malaysia's first national sepak takraw academy, with completion targeted by the end of this year. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the decision reflects the government's commitment to strengthening traditional sports and nurturing homegrown talent to compete at the highest levels. "We will make the sepak takraw academy a reality in this country. "I believe sepak takraw, like football, is a sport that makes us proud, not just nationally but also regionally and globally. "The academy can be completed before the end of this year because the Madani government is a government that works hard," he said in his speech at the launch of National Youth Day here today. Also present were Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Deputy Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul. Anwar said Yeoh had requested an allocation of RM6 million for the project, which would serve as a platform to develop young athletes and elevate the sport to greater heights. He also acknowledged the growing interest among Malaysian youth in both traditional and modern recreational activities, saying these pursuits should be supported as long as they remain within cultural values and norms. "This is part of our cultural heritage — from cities to kampungs (villages), from youth who dance for leisure to those who play futsal and football. "As long as it stays within the boundaries of proper conduct, we support it," he said. He said the unity government would continue prioritising youth empowerment through sports, the arts, and positive community engagement, in line with the Madani vision. Anwar also announced that the government has agreed to allocate RM4 million to the Malaysian Youth Council (MBM) to strengthen youth development. He said the decision followed a request by the council's president, Mohd Izzat Afifi Abdul Hamid. "This is an increase of RM1 million from last year's allocation, which saw an additional RM3 million channelled to the Youth and Sports Ministry.

PM Anwar vows to continue action against corrupt leaders

KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (picture) has reaffirmed his commitment to acting against corrupt leaders, even if such efforts may not prove to be popular. 'When we have taken action against those corrupt leaders, past or present leaders, businessmen, corporate leaders, who have squandered billions of ringgit, I have not seen that sort of anger and support that we should have. 'But it doesn't matter. I do my job regardless of whether I have the general support or not. That is my duty and I will perform to the utmost of my ability to ensure that we get rid of corruption, which has been an endemic in this country,' he said when officiating at the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 highlight celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) here today. Present were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. Also in attendance were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who also serves as project director of HAWANA 2025, and the top management of other local media organisations. The prestigious event brought together about 1,000 media practitioners from Malaysia and abroad. Elaborating further, Anwar said he is not interested in imprisoning certain individuals but is more concerned about recovering the country's misappropriated funds so they can be returned for the benefit of the people. Anwar said he found it strange that the country had 'allowed' embezzlement involving tens of billions to be carried out by several political and corporate figures, only for it to be forgotten. 'Where is the lesson in that? What is the meaning of power? I have no interest in jailing people. I'm interested in recovering the money so it can be returned to the people. That is my focus. And I want to put an end to this culture (of abuse of power and corruption). 'I'm well aware of it. They are looking for petty issues to distract from the core problems and divert people's attention. But believe me, this country will only be safe if we resolve the root issues, namely the management of public finances. Only then can we talk about additional allocations,' he said. HAWANA was introduced in 2018 as a recognition of journalists' contributions to national development, with May 29 chosen to mark the first publication of the Utusan Melayu newspaper in 1939. — BERNAMA
