Volcano blast could smash Aussie neighbour's food supply: 'Disruption and isolation'

New modelling suggests an eruption from a giant volcano could destroy roads and bridges and leave an entire community cut off just across the ditch from Australia. New Zealand's Mount Taranaki (Taranaki Mounga) towers over 5,000 farms that are crucial in providing food to the nation, but they could all be isolated for weeks if the volcano were to blow.
A satellite image shows the 2,518-metre-high peak on the west coast of the North Island surrounded by some of the properties that are home to around 126,000 people. If it were to blow, falling ash and fast-flowing volcanic material called lahar would cause significant damage to the local and national economies.
The last major eruption from the North Island giant was in the mid-1600s, and the most recent volcanic activity occurred in the 1850s, creating a lava dome that eventually collapsed down its side. Over the last 130,000 years, there have been major eruptions every 500 years, and this timing has got experts considering how best to prepare for the next one.
Modelling published in the New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics predicts a major eruption would cause multiple hazards. Up to 40 per cent of roads and 45 per cent of bridges would likely be affected, and repairs would be expected to take weeks.
The snow-capped mountain is situated inside a national park, and as the North Island's second-tallest peak, it's a major tourism drawcard. Because it's been so long since a major eruption occurred, there are lush forests filled with a wide array of bird life around its base. The mountain is important in Maori culture and was declared legally a person in February.
The study's co-author Dr Heather Craig from the University of Canterbury said the study has global implications because it's common for farms to be located around volcanoes as they're surrounded by fertile soil.
Of particular concern to Taranaki would be the isolation of marae, cultural hubs managed by Maori communities, that provide support during disasters and have the capacity to house displaced people. The modelling suggests 12 of these important properties would be cut off.
'Many agricultural communities [are] highly exposed to volcanic impacts including road network disruption and isolation. Taranaki is an example of this, where farms, roads, marae, and communities are found on the volcanic plain surrounding the mounga,' he said.

'Oh my god, this thing's going to die.' That was the thought running through the mind of wildlife filmmaker Bertie Gregory when he saw the first juvenile emperor penguin jump off a 50-foot cliff. The bird plummeted downward, splashing into the frigid Southern Ocean. After a few suspenseful seconds, it bobbed to the surface and then swam off toward the horizon. The National Geographic Explorer couldn't believe it. What came next was even more shocking: More penguins from the crowd of several hundred huddled at the edge of the towering ice shelf plunged one by one into the sea. 'There was a moment when it was just raining penguins off this cliff,' says Gregory, who captured rare footage of the event with a drone camera in Antarctica's Atka Bay last year while filming Secrets of the Penguins, a new National Geographic documentary series. 'It was one of the most extraordinary things I've ever seen.' Some did graceful swan dives; others slipped and tumbled headlong into the waves. Miraculously, nearly all survived the leap. When it's time for the penguins to return to the sea ice, they release air bubbles from their feathers. This reduces drag and allows them to accelerate out of the water. The icy impact can knock the wind out of them, sometimes producing a squeak. Photograph by Bertie Gregory Normally, young penguins jump only a couple of feet from floating sea ice into the water when they fledge, says Michelle LaRue, a conservation biologist at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. The cliff-diving chicks that Gregory observed may have been raised on the permanent ice shelf and likely took a wrong turn, finding themselves in a tricky location for a water entry while simultaneously motivated by hunger and an ocean brimming with fish beckoning below. Emperor penguins can be distinguished by their vocalizations. Each bird has a unique call that allows mates and chicks to recognize one another amid the noise of a bustling colony. Identifying their chicks' whistles, parents trumpet back until they find one another. Female emperor penguins lay a single pear-shaped egg early in the Antarctic winter when temperatures can dip to minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit and winds can reach hurricane force. Needing to replenish their energy reserves, they quickly shuffle the eggs to their mates to assume caretaking while they trek out to the ocean to feed. Male emperor penguins spend the next two months incubating the eggs balanced atop their webbed feet and shielded from the cold by a flap of the penguin's abdominal skin that forms a pocket, or brood pouch. The soon-to-be fathers will go nearly four months without food, losing roughly half their weight during breeding season. Eggs typically hatch by August, just as the females are returning to provide their young with a first meal. Then the chicks will be fed and warmed by their parents over the next five months. In the ocean, emperor penguins can dive deeper than any other species, reaching depths of more than 1,600 feet. They also can remain submerged for over 20 minutes. Soon they leave their colony and find food on their own. Juveniles like those Gregory filmed take a literal leap of faith into the sea. It is a pivotal moment when they begin their life in the ocean, where they'll spend an average of five years before returning to breed. This incident underscores a stark reality: Under some climate scenarios, scientists predict, 80 percent of Antarctica's emperor penguin colonies will disappear by the turn of the century. But LaRue remains hopeful about the emperors' ability to adapt, and she considers the recent high dive a testament to the penguins' hardiness. 'They're incredibly resilient,' she says. 'They have been around for millions of years; they've seen lots of different changes in their environment. It's a question of how rapidly they're able to deal with the changes that are happening—and how far they can be pushed.' On land, where their waddling slows them down, emperor penguins often resort to tobogganing— sliding on their bellies while pushing with their flippers and feet. This efficient mode of transport allows them to cover vast distances across the icy expanse as they travel to and from the sea. A largely ignored deposit of gold has been captured in detailed photographs for the first time. For over a century, locals on New Zealand's South Island have known their black sand beaches were littered with billions of tiny flecks of the precious metal, but there have been few attempts to extract it. Emeritus Professor Dave Craw from the University of Otago published images of the beach gold taken with an electron microscope in the New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics on Saturday. They will eventually be included in an atlas of beach gold deposits around the world. The price of gold has soared in recent years, with an ounce selling this week at close to $4,000. This has sparked renewed interest in discovering and exploiting untapped deposits, but there are reasons these Kiwi hotspots have never been tapped. That means, even with a pan its hard to extract because most floats to the surface of the water and is lost. There have been some small scale attempts during the depression and into the 1960s to mine West Coast gold but the work could be dangerous due to surf conditions, and extracting it was slow. 'There are probably hobbyists doing that now in places. But it's hard work, low grade, the gold is really small and hard to save, so I doubt that people will take it seriously except maybe on West Coast, especially where they are already mining sands for other reasons,' Craw said.
