CBS News2 days ago
Multiple cars and a semi-tractor trailer were involved in a catastrophic crash at the junction of I-80/94 and Illinois Route 394 in the south Chicago suburb of Lansing.
The truck sustained major front-end damage, and two cars were demolished. One of the cars had a white sheet over it, indicating that someone inside had died.
All traffic coming off the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) onto eastbound I-80/94 was held up at the scene. Some semi-trailer trucks were able to get by on the right shoulder.
Details on the crash were not immediately available.

Reflected in his choice of car and play, Shakir prefers reliability over style as Bills top receiver

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Khalil Shakir's rise to the top of the Buffalo Bills receiver pecking order is similar to the approach he took to buying his first car. Both revolve around reliability for the fourth-year player who catches seemingly nearly every pass thrown his way, welcomes the opportunity to block downfield to open space for teammates, and refuses to get caught up in the trappings of the NFL spotlight by instead driving a plain white 2021 Subaru. 'Never been a car guy and realized that I needed a car. So I told my financial advisors, and they were like expecting me to say something crazy,' Shakir said, recalling his search for a car to get him to Buffalo after being selected in the fifth round of the 2022 draft out of Boise State. 'I told them, just something good in the snow, and something to get me from Point A to Point B.' Shakir has taken a similar workmanlike path in making the jump from bit player to Josh Allen's most trusted playmaker. And it led to the 25-year-old being rewarded in February by signing a four-year, $60.2 million contract extension. What Shakir lacks in flash he makes up with selflessness in symbolizing Buffalo's so-called 'everybody eats' share-the-wealth offensive philosophy. 'The guy is a true lunch-pail Buffalonian,' general manager Brandon Beane said. 'He doesn't say anything. He just shows up every single day. He's Mr. Dependable.' Undervalued production Shakir's production last season wasn't exactly eye-popping. His Bills-leading 76 catches ranked 27th among NFL players, and 821 yards ranked 40th, while he scored just four touchdowns. What stands out is Shakir leading the league in catching 79% of passes thrown in his direction since 2023. And coach Sean McDermott noted how Shakir's value was measured by his absence because of an ankle injury sustained in the opening half of a 35-10 loss at Baltimore in Week 4 last season. Shakir then missed the following week's 23-20 loss at Houston in which Allen threw three straight incompletions from the Buffalo 3 on the Bills final possession, allowing the Texans to win on Ka'imi Fairbairn's 59-yard field goal as time expired. 'He's one of the main guys that can drive our football team to another level,' McDermott said. Joe Brady's influence Shakir's ascension coincided with Joe Brady's promotion to offensive coordinator after Ken Dorsey was fired 10 games into the 2023 season. Brady placed an emphasis on a more balanced approach by adding more runs and getting more receivers involved in the passing attack. In Brady's play-calling debut, Shakir had three catches for what still stands as a career-best 115 yards, including an 81-yard TD. Buffalo's offensive production didn't skip a beat in finishing second in points scored last season despite Stefon Diggs being traded to Houston. 'I have nothing but love for Joe," Shakir said. "I've always said, my career took off once Joe took over. He was somebody who just believed in me every single day.' The affection is mutual for Brady, who credits Shakir for being just as eager doing the grunt work — blocking and running routes to clear space for others to get open — as he is making catches. 'He makes my life so much easier,' Brady said. 'Khalil just embodies the 'It doesn't matter what I have to do, I'm doing to do it.'' Though the Bills have upgraded their receiver group with the offseason additions of Joshua Palmer and Elijah Moore, Shakir's role isn't expected to diminish. It was evident in practice Tuesday when Allen threw an interception during third-and-long drills. On the next play, Allen bounced back by finding Shakir on a quick out in the backfield. 'He knows his playbook. He doesn't talk. He doesn't try to do too much. He just comes out and makes plays,' left tackle Dion Dawkins said, before noting Shakir's choice of cars. 'He's like more of a Ford, bro. He can just get in and it's going to turn on and it is going to go. And that's the beauty of it.' Keeping the Subaru Shakir has since purchased a new car, but won't reveal the make because of the attention the Subaru attracted. He'll only say the new car isn't fancy, while noting his old one is staying in the family. 'I'm never getting rid of that. Now I feel like it's a part of me,' Shakir said. 'I have a loving, beautiful wife, got two wonderful puppies and a baby girl on the way. I have an amazing team, an amazing quarterback, an amazing organization,' he added. 'I'm blessed. So for me, I don't need much.' ___ AP NFL:

NASCAR Finally Went Nuclear and Unleashed Its Most Powerful Penalty

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." Last off-season, NASCAR updated its playoff waiver rules to introduce a punishing new stipulation that would effectively destroy a suspended driver's regular season progress. Until last week, the series has avoided issuing any suspension that would trigger this rule. That changed as of Tuesday night, when Austin Hill was handed a one-race suspension for his actions during last Saturday's Xfinity Series race at Indianapolis. Hill's suspension comes after a five-lap in-race penalty for his actions in a wreck involving Aric Almirola. The crash started when Almirola got up to Hill's rear bumper, causing him to slide out but not lose control. Hill then cut back down the track after seemingly saving his car from spinning, slamming into Alimrola's quarter panel and sending his opponent spinning. Almirola would later accuse Hill of intentionally wrecking him, and the five-lap penalty Hill was handed by NASCAR in-race suggests that the series agreed. Because of the new rule, Hill's suspension includes a loss of all the playoff points he could accrue during the year's regular season. That includes 21 playoff points already earned, plus any others he could have claimed with race and stage wins over the next handful of races. That is a major hit in NASCAR's strange and over-complicated elimination playoff format, which carries playoff points (but not regular points) over through every round. Hill can still advance on in those elimination rounds — he will just have to do so without the help of the advantageous extra points he would have earned before the playoffs began. The ruling against Hill is part of a years-long push by NASCAR to clean up intentional wrecks, which have become a major problem in modern stock car racing. Kyle Larson and Bubba Wallace have both received suspensions in the Cup Series for apparent intentional wrecks in recent years; Austin Dillon was not suspended for two different, seemingly intentional wrecks on the last lap of the regular season finale at Richmond last year, but he was effectively knocked out of the playoffs by a ruling determining that his win in the race did not count for postseason eligibility. The series previously opted not to hand out suspensions to Cup Series driver Austin Cindric and Xfinity Series driver Sammy Smith, both of whom were docked 50 regular season points instead. The suspension of Hill suggests that NASCAR viewed the hit as more egregious, more dangerous, or both. Since Hill caused the crash on a straightaway at a very fast oval rather than on a short oval or road course, series officials would have an argument for either option. NASCAR's second-tier Xfinity Series resumes with a race at Iowa Speedway on Saturday. Austin Hill, on the other hand, will be off until the race at Watkins Glen on August 9th. Victims of Reno casino shooting include 2 men visiting for a bachelor party, police say

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Two of the three people killed this week in a shooting outside the largest casino in Reno, Nevada, were 23-year-old men in town celebrating a bachelor party and the third victim was a 66-year-old man who lived in the area, authorities said. The suspect, who is in critical condition after being shot by police, was identified Tuesday as Dakota Hawver, a 26-year-old Reno resident. Investigators have found no connections between Hawver and the Grand Sierra Resort or any of the victims, according to police in the neighboring town of Sparks who are leading the investigation. They said the motive is still unknown. Two other people wounded in Monday's shooting remained hospitalized but were expected to make a full recovery, police said in a statement Tuesday. Justin Aguila and Andrew Canepa, both 23 years old and from Southern California, were fatally shot from behind while waiting in the casino's valet area for a ride to the airport, officials said. They had been visiting with a group of friends for a bachelor party. Angel Martinez, a 66-year-old Reno resident, was driving his car through the parking lot when he was shot and killed by the suspect, who had been hiding behind a parked vehicle, police said. Investigators determined Hawver used multiple magazines and fired approximately 80 rounds from a 9mm handgun that he had legally purchased two years ago. He has no criminal record and no history of mental health problems, officials said Tuesday. The investigation is ongoing. The shooting occurred around 7:30 a.m. Monday, when the gunman walked up to the valet area, pulled out the gun and pointed it at a group of people, police said. His weapon initially malfunctioned, but he was quickly able to get it to shoot multiple times before running through the parking lot, where he encountered an armed casino security guard. The gunman opened fire on the guard, who returned fire as the shooter fled again before being shot by police and arrested, police said Monday. In addition to those who were killed and the people taken to the hospital, three others were treated for minor injuries at the casino, according to Devon Reese, chair of the Board of Health in northern Nevada. One person was grazed by a bullet on their pinky finger, one was treated for severe anxiety and one was injured while running, he said Monday. The Grand Sierra Resort, one of Reno's most prominent venues, has hosted concerts, sporting events and a campaign rally by President Donald Trump before the 2024 election. Near the California border and just northeast of Lake Tahoe, the town is a popular summer tourist destination. The resort claims to have the biggest casino floor in northern Nevada and sits just a few blocks from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. It's also one of the tallest buildings in the city, with nearly 2,000 hotel rooms.
