Convictions after two young friends killed in machete attacks months apart

Glasgow Times30-07-2025
Daejaun Campbell cried out 'I'm 15, don't let me die' after he was ambushed in Woolwich, south-east London, on September 22 last year, the Old Bailey heard.
On Wednesday, a boy aged 17, was found guilty of his murder after a jury deliberated for more than 19 hours.
Co-accused Marko Balaz, 19, from Abbey Wood, south-east London, was found not guilty of murder, but convicted of manslaughter.
A third defendant, Jacob Losiewicz, 18, also from Abbey Wood, was cleared of wrongdoing.
It can now be reported that Daejaun was friends with 14-year-old Kelyan Bokassa, who was fatally stabbed by two 16-year-old boys with machetes on a bus in Woolwich months later on January 7.
Aspiring rapper Kelyan, nicknamed Grippa, had featured in a YouTube music video entitled Gotta Eat – in which he was seen crouching beside a floral tribute to Daejaun.
Last Friday, two 16-year-old youths were detained for at least 15 years and 10 months after pleading guilty at the Old Bailey to Kelyan's murder.
The two boys' murders, though not directly related, bore striking similarities and have resulted in pleas by their families to end the 'senseless killings'.

Last week, Kelyan's mother Marie Bokassa made an appeal for authorities to do more to stop the violence, saying: 'Our streets are bleeding.'
In the wake of Daejaun's murder, his family released a statement in which Daejaun was described as 'naturally gifted, intelligent, creative and musically talented'.
They said: 'The brutal manner which Daejaun was taken away from us is sad, and he not the first young person nor will he be the last, this senseless killing needs to stop.'
Both killings had been linked to street gang culture with Daejaun described as being exploited and groomed by older youths.
Daejaun was allegedly targeted for a 'gang check' when he was spotted near a house the defendants were visiting.
Prosecutor Mukul Chawla KC had said he was attacked by Balaz and the 17-year-old boy.
He said a witness had heard Daejaun screaming and calling for 'help' as he was stabbed.
He also threw a large knife that he was carrying although it appears to have only hit a metal fence or railing and broken into pieces, the court had heard.
The 17-year-old attacker was caught on video dropping his machete and leaning down to pick it up as he made off.
Daejaun fell to his knees in the street having suffered two stab wounds and six superficial cuts.
Losiewicz had driven the others to the scene and was nearby, the court had heard.
Mr Chawla told jurors the motive for the killing was unclear but that Daejaun had been carrying money and drugs, possibly crack cocaine.
He said: 'He may therefore have been a person exploited, by reason of his age if for no other reason, to be used as carrier and supplier of drugs by organisations that will use younger people and other vulnerable people for those purposes.
'That may be or may have been the reason why he was attacked.'
The two older defendants admitted being at the scene but denied being involved in Daejaun's killing.
The 17-year-old youth admitted the killing but claimed he acted in self defence and alone.
He had previously pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon – a machete – in a public place.
The 17-year-old also had previous convictions for carrying a 'kukri' style knife in 2021 and having a machete and affray relating to a fight in October 2023 in which a male suffered a cut to his face and a stab wound.
The court heard Balaz had previous convictions for carrying knives and possession of cannabis. Mr Losiewicz had no convictions to his name.
Following the guilty verdicts, Balaz and the youth were remanded into custody to be sentenced on October 6.

Vigilante cyclist who pushed his bike into a car he was trying to stop at ‘no entry' sign makes bizarre excuse

Due to roadworks, the road appears to be reduced to a one way street, with traffic cones and signs telling drivers not to enter it. Despite being confronted by the vigilante, the driver keeps trying to sneak down Paddenswick Road in Hammersmith, west London. It is at this point the brazen vigilante cyclist tries to block the driver's path by throwing his bike in his path. The motorist ignores the flimsy roadblock and accelerates along the road anyway, smashing into the bicycle in the process. Responding to critics of his extreme actions today, Cycling Mikey gave a bizarre excuse for not stopping his bike. Writing on X, he claimed that he 'couldn't… brake a 28kg e-bike once I realised the driver wasn't stopping'. Footage of the confrontation between the road safety warrior and the driver was filmed by Mikey and a bystander. The Dutch vigilante is then left to pick up his possessions from the tarmac after unsuccessfully stopping the motorist. Prior to the smash, Mikey can be heard in the clip saying: "What is that sign back there? You have to go back now, very naughty.' Shouting at another driver who attempts to drive through the one-way street, he says: "No f*** off, go back. "What do you think you're doing? Go back." Moment dog walker 'pushes cyclist into canal' - but claims HE'S in the right The Met confirmed they were aware of the footage and urged Cycling Mikey to speak with officers. A spokesperson for the force said: 'We are aware of footage circulating on social media which appears to show an incident on Paddenswick Road, Hammersmith on Sunday August 10. 'No arrests have been made at this stage. 'We urge victims of crime to contact the police by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency.' Cycling Mikey has made a name for himself by filming motorists breaking the rules of the road and reporting them. On his social media, he claims to have reported more than 2,000 drivers in the space of six years. Since 2019, he says motorists have paid a total of £165,700 in fines and received 2,649 penalty points due to his actions. He also claims 35 people have been disqualified from driving. Last year, footage showed him cruising along the road before he caught a woman red-handed using her phone behind the wheel. She can be seen winding the window down as Mikey explains what she's done wrong. The woman then says how she's a doctor and explains it's a very "difficult job". Mikey then appears to consider letting the woman off the hook before he asks her if she already has points. But then when she admits she does he replies: "I'm starting to think you're someone not learning from the points system." In 2020, he videoed Guy Ritchie texting while behind the wheel of his Range Rover The exchange led to the film director being banned from driving for six months, as he already had nine speeding points. He also caught Chris Eubank on the phone in 2021, with the former world champion boxer telling him: 'Go away. Off you go, off you go.' Eubank was handed three penalty points and fined £280 in costs because he jumped a red light having driven away from van Erp. As well as his YouTube site, van Erp also uploads footage to a police website which is set up for citizen reporting. 5 Cycling Mikey has made a name for himself catching drivers breaking the rules Credit: Cycling Mikey

Activist cyclist insists he could not stop his bike from colliding with car

A cycling activist has insisted he could not stop his electric bike from moving into the path of a car being driven through a no entry sign. Michael van Erp posted a video on his Cycling Mikey YouTube channel which shows he was pushing his bike into a west London road when it was struck by a car on Sunday. On Tuesday, Mr van Erp wrote on social media platform X that he 'couldn't… brake a 28kg e-bike once I realised the driver wasn't stopping'. The YouTube video shows the 52-year-old activist initially blocking the car from going through a no entry sign, which was installed at a junction because of roadworks. After gesticulating with Mr van Erp, the male driver reverses and allows vehicles coming in the opposite direction to pass, before driving forward again. The cyclist makes a second attempt to block him, but the motorist collides with his bike and drives off. Mr van Erp's belongings were scattered in the road, but it appears he escaped injured and his bike avoided serious damage. Do you want to know what really happened? — CyclingMikey the Unspeakable (@MikeyCycling) August 10, 2025 A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: 'We are aware of footage circulating on social media which appears to show an incident on Paddenswick Road, Hammersmith on Sunday August 10. 'No arrests have been made at this stage. 'We urge victims of crime to contact the police by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency.' Mr van Erp, who has more than 35,000 followers on his X account, regularly films drivers he claims are breaking road rules, such as using a handheld mobile phone behind the wheel. He says since 2019 he has reported 2,280 drivers, who have received a total of £165,700 in fines and 2,649 penalty points. He claims 35 people have been disqualified from driving because of his actions. In October 2022, theatrical agent Paul Lyon-Maris, then 60, was cleared of assault and dangerous driving after telling a jury at Southwark Crown Court Mr van Erp 'jumped' on his car. Mr Lyon-Maris – who has represented Oscar-winner Colin Firth and Lord Of The Rings actor Sir Ian McKellen – was said to have lost his temper when the cyclist tried to stop him driving on the wrong side of the road in the outer circle of Regent's Park in central London.

Toyota World Runners: Young couple who ran popular YouTube channel die in crash

A young couple who posted videos on YouTube of their adventures have died in a car crash after an incident while exploring the rural Canadian mountains A young couple who gathered a following of hundreds of thousands of people around the world from their travel and off-roading YouTube channel have died in a car crash. ‌ Stacey Tourout and Matthew Yeomans ran the YouTube channel Toyota World Runners, where they made videos on their road trip adventures around the world, as well as travel hacks and RV fixes. They were most popular for videos showing their campervan refits and their adventures through North and South America. ‌ The couple from British Columbia in Canada died after a crash near their rural home on August 7, and news of their death was shared by their friends and family on social media shortly after. It comes after a woman vanishes in car crash - then turns up months later with wild story. ‌ ‌ Kaslo Search and Rescue (SAR) confirmed the incident that happened near Trout Lake in the West Kootenay region in rural British Columbia. Mark Jennings-Bates, a manager with Kaslo SAR, confirmed they sent out an emergency response to an off-road crash at around 7.30pm. He also added that they were given very accurate information on the whereabouts to help in the search effort: "So it was on a forestry road, somewhere in the mountains, and quite a long way north in the valley up towards ... the village of Trout Lake." "Our teams were able to get to them efficiently. It's a long journey, but they got there efficiently, so that was very, very helpful. ‌ "And of course that means that the helicopter pilot could also fly straight to the destination with confidence that he was going to find them." When the teams arrived at the scene, one of the couple was found dead at the scene, while the other died later in the hospital from their injuries. Although the exact reason for the crash is not yet understood, the SAR team believe it to have been caused by a loss of control while crossing rough terrain. As a result of the incident, SAR teams have warned people of the dangers of off-road travel, with the emergency response time much longer than in an urban setting, which could make a drastic difference. ‌ He added: "You're not on a highway, you don't need to wear a seatbelt, but it's always good to use the safety devices that are built into the equipment to help protect you as well." It is also not known if the couple were exploring for one of the YouTube videos at the time of the crash. Posting on social media, Colleen's mother posted a heartbreaking tribute after their crash in the mountains. She wrote: "They are together forever, as we knew they would always be." Their fellow YouTube creators have come out to pay tribute to the young couple. The Story Till Now channel added: "They were so young and full of life, so talented, and this is a huge loss for our off-road community, their friends and family and the world."
