19 killed in a road collision in Egypt's Nile Delta region
CAIRO (AP) — A truck and a microbus collided on a road in Egypt on Friday, killing 19 people, officials said.
The microbus was carrying workers on a regional road in the city of Ashmoun, in the Nile Delta governorate of Menoufia, as they were heading to their jobs, according to a statement by the Labor Ministry. Three people survived the crash.
The victims, including the injured, were transferred to General Ashmoun hospital, according to local media reports.
Labor Minister Mohamed Gebran ordered authorities to take the necessary measures to disburse compensation to victims' families, sending up to 200,000 Egyptian pounds (about $4,000) to the families of those deceased and 20,000 Egyptian pounds ($400) to each injured person.
Menoufia's governor, Ibrahim Abu Leimon. said that the cause of the crash would be urgently investigated, and he called on the transportation ministry to reassess safety measures on the regional road, according to local media outlet Al-Masry Al-Youm.
Deadly traffic collisions claim thousands of lives every year in Egypt, which has a poor transportation safety record. Speeding, bad roads and poor enforcement of traffic laws are the main reasons behind most of the crashes.

Speed limit to be increased at fatal crash site
The speed limit on a stretch of rural road is set to be increased, despite it having previously being lowered due to a fatal crash in the area. Bradford Council has proposed changing the limit on Moor Road in Ilkley to 40mph (64 km/h), between Hangingstone Road and Burley Woodhead. A number of changes had previously been made to the section of the road in 2023, such as reducing the speed limit from 50mph (80 km/h) to 30mph (48 km/h), following the death of a 25-year-old driver there, a council spokesperson said. The decision to increase the speed limit had "not been taken lightly", but the stretch of road had been deemed "unsuitable" for such a low limit, they added. According to the authority, Moor Road had undergone several changes following a spate of incidents, and those changes were then subject to a period of monitoring. In conjunction with West Yorkshire Police, the council's road safety team had subsequenlty found the 30mph speed limit had led to some drivers making "unsafe overtaking manoeuvres" in the area. As a result, it had been decided to increase the limit to 40mph, but warning signs, lining and hazard marker posts would all remain in place. A Bradford Council spokesperson said: "We know this may seem like an unusual step to take, but can assure everyone it is being done with advice from the police and experienced highways engineers. "We remain committed to ensuring speed limits are safe, consistent, and appropriate for all road users. "The new 40mph will still be 10mph lower than it was originally. "While this change will result in varying speed limits along the route, it reflects a balanced approach based on evidence, national policy, and professional judgement." Man charged after coaches say he threatened to stab someone at girls' soccer game in GTA
Police have charged a man with uttering threats after an incident during a U13 girls soccer game in Vaughan last week where coaches say a parent threatened to stab someone. The incident happened during a game between Kleinburg Nobleton Soccer Club (KNSC) and Glen Shields Juventus FC on June 20 at Concord Thornhill Regional Park. About 10 minutes into the second half, a KNSC player collided with a Glen Shields player, said Nikita Moriarity, assistant coach for KNSC. A video recording of the game provided by KNSC appears to show a moment where two players collided, with one girl falling to the ground. After the referee blows the whistle, a voice can be heard shouting, "I'm going to f—king stab you." A young player can be heard saying: "He told me he's going to stab me" with a spectator adding "Yeah, I heard that. I also heard that." York Regional Police said a man was arrested on Friday in connection with the incident and was charged with uttering threats. Moriarity said one of her players was "obviously distraught, very fearful" after the comment was made. "When you have parents who are supposed to be role models, who are supposed to be encouraging and developing young minds, acting or saying those kind of things on the bench, regardless of who it's directed at, that's concerning," she told CBC Toronto. However, in a statement posted to Instagram Friday, Glen Shields Juventus FC said they conducted an internal review of the incident, which including analyzing "available footage" and gathering eyewitness accounts, and found the comment was made toward an adult at the game, not a player. "While early media reported an public statements suggested the comment was made toward a young player, our findings do not support that account," the club said in its statement. The individual alleged to have made the comment has been temporarily restricted from from participating in any club activities, "pending the outcome of a full investigation by the appropriate authorities," the statement says. "Glen Shields Juventus FC upholds a strict zero-tolerance policy toward abusive behaviour in any form, whether directed a players, referees, coaches, or spectators." In an email, the club's president Aldo Lippa said it will not be speaking to media about the incident. Both clubs are part of the York Region Soccer Association (YRSA.) The association's sporting director Tony Fonseca said it is aware of the incident in an email to CBC Toronto, and that the teams and the YRSA are "acting accordingly" as the police investigation continues, he said. "This does not reflect the great sportsmanship and respect demonstrated at all times by all our member clubs in York Region every time they step on the field," he wrote. "Such deplorable behaviours do not have a place in our environments." Ontario Soccer said it was also aware of the incident in a statement, but the YRSA is managing the case since it involves clubs in their district. If a formal complaint is filed with Ontario Soccer, the organization said an independent third-party will manage the case. KSNC head coach Andrea Yepez said she wants to make sure girls and women in soccer are protected and feel safe. She said she has dealt with intimidation before as a female coach in a male-dominated sport, but the alleged threat "raised the bar." "[Are] there certain protocols or procedures put in place for the safety of the female players?" she said. She is calling for consequences after the incident, which she said reflects an ongoing toxic culture among some clubs and parents. "We're not going to just roll over … We're going to keep working, keep maintaining the goals and our character," she said.
