HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – The community is invited to the unveiling of a new historical marker at Buckroe Beach on Tuesday, June 10.
The marker is located at the entrance to Buckroe Beach, at Pembroke Ave. and First St., in the landscaped courtyard in front of the bandstand.
The marker is the result of a collaboration between the Buckroe Improvement League, Virginia Department of Historic Resources, Hampton Convention & Visitors Bureau, and Hampton Parks, Recreation & Leisure Services.
The unveiling of the historical marker begins at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. It's an updated version of a previous marker and includes more historical information.
The name Buckroe Beach first appeared in official records in 1617.
Virginia's first Green Book marker unveiled at site of former Bay Shore Hotel

The park has been closed on and off since Oct. 3, 2024 in order to allow for necessary roadway improvements, which included widening the entry way to the park and repaving the parking lots and park lanes throughout the park. (WAVY) — The Elizabeth River Trail (ERT) Foundation announced they have received the designation as a National Recreation Trail on Monday. Study: Elizabeth River Trail boosts Norfolk's economy by over $18M According to a release, the designation is given out by the U.S. Department of the Interior. Monday's announcement makes the ERT just one of over 1,300 National Recreation Trails across the United States, and the only one in entire Hampton Roads region. 'This designation is a big win for our region, securing the Elizabeth River Trail as a national destination,' executive director of the ERT Foundation Kindra Greene said. 'This recognition goes a long way in ensuring the longevity of our urban trail for the future.' The release states the designation will allow for the ERT to have opportunities for regional collaboration, increased tourism and long-term preservation.
