What we know
The 33rd annual New Queens Pride parade kicks off today, June 1, at 12 p.m.
The parade will march down 37th Avenue, from 89th Street to 75th Street, in Jackson Heights, and it will feature over 140 groups.
According to the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT), these streets will be closed for the parade and festival:
Formation: 89th Street, between 35th Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue
Route: 37th Avenue, between 89th Street and 75th Street
Dispersal: 75th Street, between 37th Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue
Festival: 75th through 76th Street, between 37th Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue and 37th Road, between 74th Street and 77th Street
These streets will be closed at the discretion of the New York Police Department in Queens.
There are three Grand Marshals this year – these are individuals that are recognized as ceremonial leaders of the parade.
Andry José Hernández Romero, the honorary Grand Marshal of the parade, is a gay man from Venezuela who was deported by the Trump administration after seeking asylum in the United States. Romero fled Venezuela after facing threats for being a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
Romero was deported to El Salvador and is now detained in the maximum security prison CECOT, or the Terrorism Confinement Center.
Assembly Member Catalina Cruz, one of the two other Grand Marshals, represents Assembly District 39, which encompasses Corona, Elmhurst and Jackson Heights, as well as parts of Middle Village and Rego Park.
The last Grand Marshal is Assembly Member Jessica González-Rojas, who represents Assembly District 34, which includes Astoria, Corona, East Elmhurst, Jackson Heights and Woodside.
The Pride Festival will be held at the intersection of 37th Road and 75th Streetin Queens, Jackson Heights, and it will run from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The Queens Pride Parade was formed in response to two events.
One catalyst was Julio Rivera's murder in 1990 – Rivera, a 29-year-old Jackson Heights bartender, wasattacked and killed by members of a local gang because he was gay.
The other was the public outcry to the Children of the Rainbow Curriculum, created by the New York City Department of Education in 1991 to teach children tolerance towards diverse communities.
The original Queens Pride Parade and Multicultural Festival was held on June 6, 1993, and an estimated 10,000 people were in attendance. The parade inspired the formation of pride marches in Brooklyn and the Bronx, and is the second-oldest pride march in New York City.

While pedestrian fatalities involving e-bikes remain relatively rare — totaling six between 2021 and 2024 — there were 923 pedestrian injuries involving all types of bikes during this period. The proposed 15 miles per hour speed limit would mirror best practices for e-bike speeds in other parts of the world, including the European Union, officials say. 'Thankfully, the vast majority of e-bike and stand-up e-scooter users operate their devices safely, but we are using every tool in our safety toolkit and studying worldwide best practices to ensure every New Yorker is traveling at safe speeds on our streets,' said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. In Wisconsin, you can add an emergency contact to your driver's license, but few have done it
More than 82,000 Wisconsinites have signed up to link an emergency contact to their driver's license within the first year of the feature becoming available. On average, around 1,000 people opt into the program per week, according to a news release from the state Department of Transportation. That represents less than 2% of all 4.47 million licensed Wisconsin drivers in 2024, according to DOT data. At the end of 2024, just over 53,000 had signed up for the program. 'This is a very simple, successful program that helps law enforcement reach a loved one or friend faster in case there's an emergency,' DMV Bureau of Driver Services Director Tina Braddy said. 'It's there if you need it.' If you're interested in signing up for the program, here's how. The program is optional, and an emergency contact isn't added automatically. The easiest way to sign up is online here. 'This is extremely valuable information when it comes to accidents, or even a walk-away situation for an Alzheimer's patient, an overdose, or any emergency when we may need to contact a loved one on a Wisconsinite's behalf,' Sen. Jesse James, a Republican from Altoona and a part-time police officer, said in a press release. Sixteen other states have the same legislation, bill authors said at the time. The effort is led by Christine Olson, a Milwaukee native, who wasn't notified for 6½ hours after her daughter was killed by a drunk driver in Florida. Kokua Line: Is email about ‘recorded violation' a scam?
Question : I am pretty sure this is a scam but my safety check just expired so I want to check. Plus I got an email not a text. It says to pay a fine for a 'recorded violation ' or I will lose my license. Is this real ? I did not get a ticket in the regular mail, which is what I thought happens with the cameras. And the email doesn't give much detail on the supposed infraction. Answer : No, it's a scam—an apparent example of a common tactic among scammers, who adapt their fraud attempts to fit whatever scenario might make people more likely to fall for the scam. Traffic enforcement using automated cameras is relatively new in Honolulu, and some scammers seem to be banking on the hope that their targets don't know how this enforcement actually operates. Traffic safety cameras at 10 Honolulu intersections generate tickets for red-light running and warnings for speeding (ticketing for speeding isn't expected to begin until October ). In either case, a detailed letter is sent by regular mail to the address of the vehicle's registered owner, specifying the date, time, location and type of infraction, along with other information, according to the state Department of Transportation. People who have received these scam texts and emails have been told falsely that their vehicle registration could be canceled, or they could lose their license, or that they may face prosecution. The scammers sometimes mention high fees accruing on a bogus toll booth charge, or threaten that unpaid fines will ruin the recipient's credit rating.
