Roberts to represent SA in the World Cup in Malaysia
This premier tournament is designed as a preparation event for the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and has generated great anticipation across the world bowls community.
The World Cup, a platinum event on the World Bowls Series calendar, will be hosted at the prestigious Bukit Kiara National Lawn Bowl Centre—a world-class venue that staged the lawn bowls competition during the 1998 Commonwealth Games.
A total of twelve nations will participate, including the host country Malaysia and the top 11 countries from the 2023 World Championships.
The format is as elite as it is inclusive: six-person teams comprising two Open Women, two Open Men and two Para athletes (one male and one female), competing across seven events including singles and pairs in each section.
Roberts' selection is well-earned. In November 2024, he donned the green and gold at the World Champion of Champions tournament at Brown's Bay Bowling Club in Auckland, New Zealand and earlier this year, he secured the Fairtree PBA Singles title.
In Malaysia, he will compete in the open men's singles and pair up with Jason Evans (Johannesburg Bowling Association) in the men's pairs.
The full team is a blend of experience and talent: Evans and Roberts in the Open Men's division, Anneke Scheepers (Western Province) and Bridget Herselman (Sables) in the Open Ladies' division, and Jared James (Ekurhuleni) and Margie Palmer (Western Province) representing the physically disabled category.
Susan Nel of Amanzimtoti Bowling Club will coach the ladies' squad and accompany the team when they depart on October 31 to allow for practice and acclimatisation on indoor greens.
Roberts is seen as a shining inspiration for young bowlers across South Africa. His dedication, work ethic and composure on the green are widely admired. Within the Port Natal bowling community, his selection has been met with pride and high expectations.
Port Natal League action heats up
Meanwhile, on the local scene, the Port Natal Inter-Club leagues kicked off on Saturday 5 July. In the Men's A Division, Westville BC bagged 15 out of 17 points in a convincing win over Amanzimtoti BC, and Umhlali CC matched that score against Stella Park BC. Thanks to a slightly superior shot difference, Westville tops the league table.
This weekend promises a gripping double-header: on Saturday, Westville travel to Parkhill BC, who currently sit third, while on Sunday they host Northlands BC. Umhlali, sitting in second, face Hillary BC on Saturday and Hillcrest BC—keen to upset the log leaders—on Sunday.
In the Ladies A Division, Stella Park claimed 10 out of 12 points in their clash against Umhlali, placing them firmly at the top. All first division clubs head to Mount Edgecombe on Saturday, where Stella Park will take on the hosts in another key showdown.

Bethell to become England's youngest cricket captain against Ireland
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM - Jacob Bethell is set to become England's youngest international men's cricket captain after the 21-year-old was named Friday as skipper for next month's T20 international series in Ireland. The talented Warwickshire all-rounder is regarded as one of the rising stars of the English game, even though he has still to score his first professional century in any format. Bethell, however, has still been appointed to lead England in a three-match T20 series against Ireland in Dublin from September 17-21, which will serve as part of the team's preparations for next year's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Bethell's most recent international appearance was in the fifth and deciding Test against India at the Oval this month where, having replaced injured red-ball captain Ben Stokes, he managed scores of just six and five, while not taking a wicket with his left-arm spin. But former England captain Michael Vaughan said team management had made a "diabolical" decision to call-up Bethell for such a key match on the back of so little first-class cricket this season. Bethell has been given the chance to lead England after team chiefs decided regular white-ball captain Harry Brook should take a break following the ODI and T20 series against South Africa. Three weeks before the 2019 World Cup, the Springboks' preparations received a jolt when attack coach Swys de Bruin resigned from the management team. The popular coach cited personal reasons that he later disclosed to be stress-related. De Bruin withdrew from coaching for some time and worked as a television analyst, but a year later, he was tempted into a return to coaching when he was offered the different challenge of heading the Springbok Women's team. It has been a marriage made in heaven — if that is the correct terminology — with De Bruin loving his new lease on life and the Bok Women improving hugely over the last 12 months. De Bruin, speaking hours before taking his team to the Women's World Cup in England, was honest about what went down in 2019. 'What happened to me? It is a good question,' De Bruin said. 'It was a case of burnout. Thank goodness I am over that. I know the traps — I must not get too involved in refereeing decisions, social media, and try and read everything. 'I was with the Springboks and also a head coach in Super Rugby (with the Lions) — you go from one group to the other, and the stress just builds and builds.

GOOD news for Proteas as Aiden Markram is set to captain the Proteas all the way to the 2026 World Cup. | BackpagePix PROTEAS T20I captain Aiden Markram confirmed that he will continue to play as an opening batter through to the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. In the shortest format of the game, the 30-year-old had been playing as a middle-order batter for the two years that former coach Rob Walter had been in charge, despite having started his career as an opening batter. The ongoing series against Australia is the first in which the right-handed batter has returned to opening batting for South Africa, a decision that all-format coach Shukri Conrad has made since taking over the T20I and ODI teams. Markram confirmed that the move to the top of the order is not temporary and explained that it is also pushed by the nature of the batters that are currently in the team. Having been a viable fifth bowling option as well for the past couple of years, the 30-year-old did not confirm whether or not he will continue playing that role, although he finds it exciting. "Going through our squads and the players that we've got around, we think probably that's the best fit. We've got some guys in the middle order that are a lot more destructive than myself and we feel probably it's better off for myself and Ricks (ryan Rickelton) to be up top," Markram told the media on Friday. "I did it a bit at the IPL, starting to do it now again at international cricket. It's an exciting role. It's always nice to bat in the power play, and the focus is to get the team off to good starts. "I don't know (if I will bowl as well). It's very much a feel thing. It's quite a daunting task, to be honest. You just see the ball flying nowadays, and you're like, I'm not so sure I really want to be a bowler. But there'll be occasions where you feel like the wicket might be on the slower side or might offer something, and you sort of take that punt. "But the other way I try to operate is just go on my gut feel, whatever my gut's telling me in the moment, run with that and back that and sort of reflect on what could have been and what should have been possibly after the game."
