
Charlie Bigham under fire for ‘greenwashing'
Consumer group, Which? found that three in five products advertised as environmentally friendly fell short of requirements set out by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
Brands flagged by the investigation included posh ready meal retailer Charlie Bigham, and Italian vegan food company Mr Organic.
Lasagne meals made by Charlie Bigham advertised on Ocado boast that they use 30pc less cardboard. However, Which? found no meaningful comparison to support the claim.
Which? similarly accused Mr Organic of providing no proof of its claim that its canned chickpeas had 'zero air miles'.
Mr Organic said it was in the process of removing the claim from its packaging as part of a wider rebrand, but that rolling out new labelling had 'taken time due to not wanting to throw away any old packaging for environmental reasons'.
The advertising watchdog requires brands to be 'clear and unambiguous' when making eco-friendly claims, and that any comparisons made must be fair and meaningful.
However, Which? claimed 86pc of products reviewed failed to meet at least one of the CMA's green principles.
This was largely driven by brands boasting that their products were 'eco', 'sustainable' or 'environmentally friendly' in product descriptions, Which? said.
Consumer law expert, Lisa Webb, of Which?, said ' shoppers were being let down by vague or unsubstantiated claims'.
She added: 'Misleading green claims don't just waste people's money – they also erode trust and give an unfair advantage to businesses that cut corners.
'We want to see stricter enforcement so brands can't get away with having vague claims about sustainability on products, and eco-conscious shoppers can be confident in what they're buying.'
Argos was singled out by the investigation over its Hey Duggee bean bag, which is advertised as 'environmentally friendly' without providing evidence for the claim.
Which? also accused the retailer of misleading shoppers with its Chad Valley wooden puzzle set, which is advertised as 'kinder to the environment' without being clear what environmental aspects were being compared.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max is billed by Argos as using 'more recycled materials', but Which? said the description failed to clarify whether this was in relation to previous iPhones or other smartphones on the market.
An Argos spokesman said: 'We take our role as a responsible retailer very seriously and it's important to us that customers are able to make informed choices when they shop with us.
'We offer thousands of products, from hundreds of suppliers and are working to review all product descriptions.'
The CMA requires that brands consider 'the full lifecycle of the product or service'; however, Which? said its investigation found that clothes retailers downplayed the environmental impact of using polyester – even if the material was recycled.
The report gave the example of a pair of Adidas leggings advertised as being made of '85pc polyester', without making it clear to shoppers that even recycled polyester is not biodegradable.
An Adidas spokesman said the 85pc composition was factually correct, and that recycled polyester contained lower carbon and could help to reduce emissions.
Which? added: 'The description does not mention other significant issues that may be relevant to the product's lifecycle, such as the release of microplastics from recycled polyester, and that the source of recycled polyester is often from recycled plastic bottles, disrupting the bottle-to-bottle recycling loop.'
A Charlie Bigham spokesman said the 30pc reduction in materials came from removing an additional cardboard flap.
The company added: 'We believe great food deserves thoughtful packaging. That's why, 18 years ago, we introduced wooden trays, sourced from PEFC-certified poplar and designed to be oven-friendly, compostable, and reusable.
'Since then, we've continued to improve, from switching to energy-saving red clay ceramic pots to using plastic film made with 30pc recycled content and cutting plastic waste by 24 tonnes a year.'
A spokesman for Ocado said: 'We work closely with our suppliers to ensure all the information they provide for our website is accurate. We also have a training programme and toolkits for our colleagues to make sure we're compliant and up to date with the evolving regulatory landscape.'
An Adidas spokesman said: 'The example mentioned is on a third party website that is not operated by Adidas and the wording is not in line with our current marketing communication.
'However, it is factually correct and offers full information about the composition of the product material with 85pc recycled polyester and 15pc elastane.
'Recycled polyester has an environmental benefit since it is not made from virgin material, but from recycled plastic waste. Recycled polyester has a lower carbon footprint than virgin polyester and helps to reduce emissions.'

Even the well-heeled clientele inside the establishment, in the heart of a wealthy London suburb, appear oblivious to the sinister dealings going on around them. For Pavel Vinto, 36, the boss of this swish Iraqi-Kurdish restaurant, helps 'hundreds' of migrants enter the UK illegally by laundering cash from his kebab house in Ealing, west London, for people traffickers in northern France. And he does so right under the noses of affluent locals – and the police. But today, rather than chatting to another lucrative customer, as he believes he is doing, the Iraqi money man is spilling his secrets to an undercover Mail on Sunday reporter. Shocking footage, filmed with a hidden camera inside Vinto's thriving diner, reveals how underground banking networks are syphoning hundreds of millions of pounds a year to facilitate record Channel crossings – while operating in plain sight on Britain's high streets. Sir Keir Starmer has made stopping the flow of money that facilitates people trafficking a key tenet of his vow to 'smash the gangs'. But The Mail on Sunday tracked down Vinto's enterprise with astonishing ease, begging the question as to how he has been able to operate so brazenly. Our undercover investigation also shines a light on the 'hawala' system, an untraceable means of money exchange favoured by smugglers and migrants that protects them from the authorities. The National Crime Agency (NCA) has said that hundreds of millions of pounds are being transferred to and from the UK using this method, with restaurants, car washes and even carpet stores acting as fronts. To unearth these secretive networks, the MoS first made contact with an Iraqi trafficker based in Dunkirk, who was advertising his services on TikTok. Our undercover reporter said he and four friends were travelling from Albania and were seeking passage to the UK. The smuggler, who gave his name as Asoo, told the reporter to go to Hotel de Bretagne outside Dunkirk train station – an area notorious for migrant gatherings – but that payment should be made beforehand to a contact in London. 'I give you a shop in London,' the smuggler said. 'You put the money there as a guarantee. When you get to the UK, I take the money. 'If you don't get to the UK, you go and take your money back. No problem. But if you have cash, no problem – pay me before you get in the boat. 'If you have money in Turkey, no problem. Afghanistan, Iraq, London – anywhere.' Our reporter said he had a friend in London who could make the payment there. The smuggler then sent an address for a Middle Eastern restaurant in Ealing, which we are not naming for legal reasons, and a telephone number for a man named Pavel. In a phone conversation to set up a meeting, Pavel sought to reassure his prospective client that it wasn't a scam. 'Brother, it is not only you,' he said. 'I have one hundred people.' A second undercover reporter met Pavel at his restaurant at 8pm on a balmy Saturday evening. It appeared to be doing good business, with customers on red leather sofas chatting. Pavel's slicked-back hair and bulging biceps were enough to let anyone know he meant business. At one point, he was seen clasping a pair of pliers as he grinned menacingly at our reporter. Soon, it was time to talk cash. The payment was agreed at £1,500 per person. For the proposed five migrants, this came to a total of £7,500. 'You know brother, I am dealing with all the people,' Pavel explained. 'It's like insurance.' He continued: 'It [the money] is going to stay until they arrive. I'm going to wait for a call from you. 'So, they're going to come to London. They're going to disappear for two, three days. They'll be taken to a hotel... Then they call you saying we are here. Then you're going to call me back. 'Pavel, they are here, safe.' Then I'm going to transfer the money to them [the smugglers] in France. That's how it's going to be.' He added that there would be a £100 fee per person to transfer the money. In most hawala exchanges, however, cash is never physically transferred. Instead, it is a transfer of debt. Usually, the money is first paid to the hawala agent in the UK to facilitate the crossing. Once the migrants have arrived in England, the UK broker then owes this money to the smuggler in Dunkirk. If money needs to be sent in the opposite direction, the debt evens out and the agents take a percentage of the transaction as a fee. The system is legal in the UK, provided a broker registers with the Financial Conduct Authority, and is commonly used by immigrants to send cash home to their families. But the informal process makes it attractive to criminals, who leave no trace, and to the migrants, as it acts as a guarantee and protects them from being scammed. The NCA has described this process as 'criminal escrow'. As a Somalian hawaladar admitted in a UN report last year: 'In the hawala system, we don't ask questions. We only offer the service.' But Vinto's description of the arrangements suggests he knew just what the money was for: facilitating the record 20,000 small-boat migrants who have reached Britain in the first half of this year. Vinto told our reporter he has run his restaurant for only two-and-a-half years, the same amount of time he has lived in England. Before that, he lived in Germany, but prefers it here, he said. No surprise, given his current residence in Kingston upon Thames, an affluent area of south-west London. Astonishingly, NCA officers had previously arrested a Kurdish man connected with the same restaurant on suspicion of money-laundering offences. The arrest was not connected to Vinto. The Ealing restaurant is far from the only high-street establishment to be acting as a money exchange for people smugglers. An Iranian carpet business in London was found to be operating as a front in a network of bankers transferring money for people traffickers following an NCA investigation. Asghar Gheshalghian, 48, was jailed for eight years after phone evidence revealed his links with at least eight Iranian migrants who later arrived in the UK by boat or lorry and claimed asylum. And a car wash franchise in Caerphilly, Wales, was busted after the NCA discovered it was a front for a people-smuggling ring. The Prime Minister has claimed that freezing the assets of those who aid illegal migration will allow the UK to 'break' their business model. The Government is set to introduce a new sanctions regime by the end of this year, designed to stop individuals using the UK to launder cash for smugglers. Announcing his plans in January, Sir Keir said: 'If you're going to smash a gang that is driven by money, follow the money.' But critics have argued the measures are too minor to stop small-boat crossings. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: 'Labour is allowing people smugglers and their money men to operate right under their noses with impunity. 'Their laughable claim to smash the gangs lies in tatters. Labour's tinkering around the edges is making no difference. So far, 2025 has been the worst in history for illegal immigrants crossing the Channel. 'Only a removals deterrent will actually stop this – so every illegal immigrant arriving here is immediately removed to a location outside Europe.' An NCA spokesman said: 'Tackling organised immigration crime, including that facilitated via the hawala banking system, remains a top priority for the NCA because the criminal groups involved put lives at risk and threaten the UK's border security. 'We have around 80 investigations ongoing into the highest harm people-smuggling networks impacting the UK and are working with partners at home and abroad to disrupt and dismantle them. 'We'd like to thank the Mail for providing this information, which we are examining more closely.' A Home Office spokesman said: 'Criminal hawaladars are not welcome in the UK. They should be in no doubt they will face the full force of the law. Illegal money laundering for people smugglers can result in 14 years in prison.'

A new Chinese 'super embassy' in London will have on-site accommodation for more than 200 intelligence officers, diplomatic sources have warned. The revelations about the 'spy campus' are likely to increase concerns about the development on the site of the Royal Mint buildings near the Tower of London, which has been revived by No10 despite being blocked by the previous government after warnings from MI5 and Scotland Yard. The Bank of England has also warned Downing Street about the risks of allowing it to be built close to sensitive financial centres. Mapping data shows the proposed site lies directly between financial hubs in the City and Canary Wharf and close to three major data centres, including the Stock Exchange. Earlier this year, The Mail on Sunday revealed that planning documents for the embassy included 'spy dungeons' – two suites of basement rooms and a tunnel, with their purpose redacted for security reasons. A source said: 'There will effectively be a student-style campus for spies in the heart of the City. 'And those spy dungeons are so deep that the sensitive cables are virtually at head height.' The MoS can also reveal that the embassy plans exempt a 'cultural exchange' section from 'inspection and verification' by UK authorities. A US security source said 'cultural interests/exchange' is a 'euphemism for intelligence and security services', adding: 'It's where they often stuff their security and intelligence staff, among other diplomats. And if it's a "cultural" centre/space, why do they always declare it off limits in planning documents?' Ex-Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith said: 'Everywhere there is a mega embassy... Chinese state-sponsored, trans-national repression of those who have fled the Chinese state or who criticise it grows dramatically. 'It's simple: a bigger embassy has more spies and more repression.' Shadow Levelling Up Secretary Kevin Hollinrake said Labour had been 'caught red-handed trying to ram through this sinister embassy' in a 'desperate attempt to woo the Chinese Communist Party to bail out their failing economic policies'. Prince William stops charging charities thousands of pounds' rent
Prince William has stopped imposing rents on lifeboat stations, the fire service, village halls and school playing fields after a Sunday Times investigation revealed his private property empire was making large sums of money from charities and community groups. The Duchy of Cornwall, which provides William with a private income, said it had taken the opportunity 'to stop and reflect' since the story and the estate now wished to adopt a 'new policy' to ensure it was 'a force for good in the years to come'. • Revealed: the property empires that make Charles and William millions In November, a joint investigation with Channel 4's Dispatches obtained the details of 3,536 properties held by the Duchy of Lancaster, which provides the King with an income, and 1,874 held by the Duchy of Cornwall. The files revealed that Charles and his elder son were making millions of pounds a year in tax-free profits by charging charities, the armed forces, the NHS, schools, the prison service and councils for the right to use lands, rivers and seashores largely seized by the monarchy in medieval times. Charles and William operate as commercial landlords while holding a special status exempting them from paying corporation tax on their profits. Last year, the Duchy of Lancaster raised £27.4 million for the King, and this year the Duchy of Cornwall raised £22.9 million for the prince, which they use to fund their private homes, personal income and staff. This private income is separate from the £132 million of public money, the sovereign grant, the royals will receive from the Exchequer this year to finance their formal duties, palaces and official households. The Duchy of Cornwall has now announced it will stop imposing the following rental charges: • £600 a year from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution for permission to use the prince's beaches at Salcombe, Sennen Cove, the Lizard, Rock and St Mary's in the Isles of Scilly.• £15,000 from Devon county council over 50 years to allow Princetown fire station to operate on duchy land. • Thousands of pounds a year from communities for permission to use village halls in Curry Mallet and Newton St Loe, allotments in Bradninch and a community orchard in Newquay used to help disadvantaged groups.• £3,000 over 20 years from the Trinity House maritime charity for the right to operate the Bishop Rock lighthouse in the Isle of Scilly. • Thousands of pounds a year from councils and schools so the public can use playing fields, rugby pitches and recreation grounds in Princetown, Corston, Clandown near Bath and Stoke-sub-Hamdon in Somerset.• £125,000 over 25 years from the government for the use of the visitor centre and shop at Tintagel Castle, which fund the castle's preservation. • £200 a year for the use of a children's play area in Poundbury, Dorset, and rental payments from the Scouts. The duchy said it was also reviewing the rents it charges state schools. Devon county council is required to pay the duchy at least £319,000 over 21 years for the right to operate Princetown Community Primary School, on Dartmoor. Farrington Gurney Church of England Primary School, near Bath, is paying £60,000 for the use of its premises over 25 years. Will Bax, the keeper of the records for the Duchy of Cornwall, said: 'Our new policy recognises our key role at the heart of communities. As such we will waive rents for grassroot community tenants and give up to 50 per cent rental discounts to charity tenants where they directly rent space from the duchy, and are active on the ground within our communities. 'The transition to the leadership of the 25th Duke of Cornwall marked a significant moment for the estate. Together, we are building on the strong foundations and seizing the opportunity to strengthen our positive impact, ensuring the duchy remains a force for good in the years to come.' Despite this new approach, the duchy says it will continue to take large taxpayer-funded rents from government departments. Over the past 20 years, it has charged the Ministry of Defence at least £900,000 for the right to moor boats needed to train recruits on the waters surrounding the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, the country's top naval academy. The duchy also charges the Royal Navy £10,000 a year for access to its own oil depot, which is used to fuel the nation's warships, at Devonport in Plymouth, the UK's biggest naval base. The duchy imposes further charges on the army for the right to train within Dartmoor National Park. The King is head of the armed forces and William is commodore-in-chief of the submarine service. In addition, the duchy says it will continue to charge the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) £1.5 million a year — amounting to £37.5 million over the 25 years of the lease — to use HMP Dartmoor, despite it now standing empty because of high levels of toxic gas recorded on the site. The duchy's lease compels the MoJ to spend a minimum of £68 million over the next decade updating the prison buildings. Last week the duchy said the MoD and MoJ both obtained their 'own independent specialist advice in connection with licences and leases held with the duchy including on matters of rent'. Dorchester Community Church will continue to pay at least £1 million to the duchy over the duration of its 250-year lease. The duchy said: 'This property is subject to a unique legal position. Rent will not be reduced.' The tax and operating status of the duchies has long been a source of contention. The Duchy of Lancaster says it operates as a commercial company and the Duchy of Cornwall says it is a 'private estate with a commercial imperative'. Under a memorandum of understanding with the Treasury, the estates receive special tax status. This means they pay no capital gains or corporation tax and do not have to comply with property laws such as compulsory purchase orders. The King and the prince both say they pay income tax voluntarily at the highest rate (45 per cent) on the duchy money they receive. The last time Charles published his taxes, for the year 2021-22, he paid income tax of £5.9 million, which amounted to 25 per cent of the £23 million duchy profit, because he deducted expenses he considered related to his official duties. William has never declared how much tax he pays. Kensington Palace declined to say how much income tax the prince paid on the £22.9 million he received from the duchy last year. Last week, the Duchy of Lancaster said it was 'actively reviewing' its own rental charges, which include charging the NHS more than £11 million for the right to park ambulances in a London warehouse owned by the King. Its latest accounts have not yet been released. Baroness Hodge of Barking, the government's anti-corruption champion, said the duchy's reforms showed 'the best of journalism does have an impact'. 'This is a good first step but they need to do more,' she said. 'The royals need to remember that they are receiving a huge amount of taxpayers' money via the sovereign grant. That puts the onus of responsibility on them not to exploit their position and charge public services an arm and a leg. In addition, if they want to act commercially it is wrong they get a tax advantage which gives them an unfair competitive advantage.'
