Isuzu D-Max X-rider: Comfortable and stable in all conditions
There are now more entries into the market such as LDV and BYD, but the original workhorses are what South Africans have come to know and love.
The
Mail & Guardian
had the Isuzu D-Max X-rider on test for a week.
It is very stylish from the outside with black accents on the grille, side-steps and a roll-bar. This allows the Isuzu D-Max X-rider to express itself and stand out for its looks. The aggressive nature of the exterior helps the vehicle maintain that big and bullyish bakkie feeling.
Stepping inside the bakkie, you are treated to a very comfortable experience: leather upholstery with red stitching and nice red designs along the dash.
But I did have a small issue with how unresponsive the infotainment system was. It felt as if I had to really push the screen for it to process what I was trying to do. Luckily for Isuzu, it hasn't packed too much into the infotainment system, so it was not an inconvenience at all.
When you get to drive the Isuzu D-Max X-rider, you begin to understand why these bakkies sell like hotcakes.
The 1.9 litre turbodiesel engine delivers 110kW of power and 350Nm of torque, and while those are not the most boastful figures, it certainly is enough to get you through when cruising at the national speed limit.
It's not exactly refined, but it is a 4×4 bakkie at the end of the day and the six-speed automatic gearbox is effortless. You will experience a touch of turbolag, but handling wise, even for a bakkie, there was very little body roll around bendy roads.
You also have the option of off-roading with all the necessary features such as 4L and 4H that will make off-roading an easy task for the Isuzu D-Max X-rider.
The suspension is also tuned for both on-road and off-road driving, so that does make the drive on this vehicle comfortable no matter where you are.
In terms of safety, the Isuzu D-Max X-rider includes multiple airbags — driver and front passenger airbags, front side airbags, curtain airbags and a driver's knee airbag.
Additionally, it features a rear view camera with rear sensors and cruise control.
Ultimately, this bakkie is comfortable and stable in any condition. It doesn't discriminate or is not specifically built for one thing or another.
It also feels solid and like a proper workhorse.
The Isuzu D-Max X-rider starts from R652 500 and goes all the way up to R757 800.

Jetour to launch more new models after strong start in SA
The T2 is 93mm shorter with a more upright, Land Rover Defender-esque styling and a similar off-road driving disposition. It will compete with the GWM Tank 300 and BAIC B40 as prime examples. My walkabout at the company's parts warehouse in Waterfall, Midrand, this week revealed parts boxes labelled T1 and T2, confirming the VP's commitment for an October 2025 debut for the new pair. With South Africa a changed landscape from when Jetour arrived in 2024, with new buyer trends, a struggling economy and US-imposed import tariffs, d oes Campbell support the call that more Chinese brands should start to assemble cars locally to safeguard the local automotive industry? He said there are no plans to build Jetour cars locally, and he is aware of unconfirmed reports claiming group brand Chery has been looking at taking over Nissan's plant in Rosslyn, Pretoria. However, Campbell said plans to manufacture locally need a viable export programme. Jetour SA supports the local industry through partnerships with local suppliers of aftermarket accessories such as tow bars, and Campbell said he would be willing to support the three remaining tyre manufacturing companies operating in the country after Goodyear announced its exit.

Speculation over: BYD-owned Denza coming to South Africa
Upscale brand will launch with a rebadged version of off-road sister brand Fangchengbao's Boa 5 plug-in hybrid SUV. Speculated at the beginning of the year as being another Chinese manufacturer heading to South Africa, a new report has confirmed BYD-owned Denza as, indeed, heading to market next year. Three-pointed star influence Founded as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz 15 years ago, a complete line-up reshuffle five years ago resulted in Stuttgart reducing its stake in Denza, before being bought out last year. ALSO READ: BYD Sealion 7 priced as brand's new flagship EV crossover Soon to launch in key other right-hand-drive markets such as the United Kingdom and Australia, the brand, which specialises in electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, will reportedly launch a single product initially, before expanding its portfolio. First product coming According to CAR Magazine, the model in question will be a B5, a rebadged version of the Boa 5 sold under the Fangchengbao brand in China. Unveiled two years ago as the first Fangchengbao product, with the long wheelbase Boa 8 arriving the following year, the Boa 5/B5 rides on the same body-on-frame DMO or Dual Mode Offroad platform as the BYD Shark bakkie, with dimensions with 4 890 mm in overall length, a width of 1 970, height of 1 920 mm and wheelbase of 2 800 mm. Bao 5 or Denza B5 will ride on the same platform as the BYD Shark. Image: Fangchengbao China Sporting a ground clearance of 220 mm, the B5 can, however, be equipped with BYD's Disus-P hydraulic suspension developed for the YangWang division of ultra-luxury, performance vehicles, which raises its clearance to 310 mm. Offering an approach angle of 35-degrees and departure of 32-degrees, up front, the B5 uses the familiar combination of a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine combined with BYD's own battery pack driving two electric motors. Boa 5's interior sports three displays. Image: Fangchengbao China Similar in layout to the Shark, the battery pack outputs 31.8-kWh, with the front motor producing 200 kW and the rear 285 kW. Combined with the petrol engine's 135 kW, the Boa 5/B5 develops a combined 505kW/760Nm, resulting in a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds. Supporting DC charging up to 100 kW will require a waiting time of 16 minutes from 30-80%, with the claimed EV range being 125 km according to China's CLTC measuring system. With the petrol engine included, Denza reports a total range of 1 200 km. In terms of spec, the Chinese market Boa 5 comes equipped with three displays; a 15.6-inch infotainment, a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch on the passenger side. Three-row Boa 8 could, possibly, also arrive in South Africa. Image: Fangchengbao China Retaining the same centre console as the Shark with physical buttons and switchgear, the B5/Boa 5 also sports a Head-Up Display projected onto the windscreen, three locking differentials and a Devialet sound system. Priced from 289 800 yuan to 352 800 yuan in China, which amounts to a directly converted R721 499 to R878 489, stickers for the South African B5 remains unknown at present. Other products likely Aside from the Boa 5/B5, other models line-up for South Africa could include the newly launched N9 SUV, the D9 MPV and possibly the Z9 that will spearhead its operations in Europe, along with the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo fastback estate-styled Z9 GT. As mentioned, full plans about Denza's market launch will only come to the fore next year. Additional information from Denza China, NOW READ: Plug-in hybrid BYD Sealion 6 lands in South Africa

Hilux named world's best-selling bakkie, SA among top markets
Having taken first place with the previous-generation RAV4 as the world's best-selling vehicle of 2024, Toyota has also ranked top as the best-selling bakkie manufacturer over the past 12 months. Global top 10 The Citizen reports that, according to a six-month market study by renowned automotive analyst Felipe Munoz, the Hilux ranked above the Ford F-150 as the world's best-seller with sales of 618 200 versus 594 100. Admittedly sold in more markets compared to the F-150's North American focus, the Hilux finished as one of three Toyota products within the global top 10. Its US counterpart, the Tacoma, placed eighth with 215 600 units sold, while the full-size Tundra ranked ninth on 179 400. The Blue Oval also secured three places within the top 10, with the Ranger in fourth (386 900) and the F-250 10th (167 300). General Motors filled the third and sixth spots with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (418 300) and its upscale twin, the GMC Sierra 1500 (267 500), respectively. Stellantis followed in fifth with the Ram 1500 (282 300), and Isuzu took seventh with the D-Max (262 200). View this post on Instagram A post shared by Felipe Munoz | Automotive (@carindustryanalysis) South Africa ranked In a separate ranking of the biggest non-US market bakkies, South Africa featured in the top 10 for no fewer than six mainstream global models. These include the Hilux (4th), D-Max (4th), Ranger (5th), Nissan Navara (7th), Volkswagen Amarok (4th) and Peugeot Landtrek. Most likely a result of their local production — with Landtrek manufacturing set to start next year — the report excludes Chinese brands and the ageing Mahindra Pik Up, which is sold in fewer international markets. So far this year, South Africa's perennial top three — the Hilux, Ranger and D-Max — again feature among the 10 best-selling vehicles for the first half of 2025, with the Hilux remaining at number one overall, followed by the Ranger in second and the Isuzu fifth.
