BBC commissions documentary about TV chef Heston Blumenthal's bipolar diagnosis
The hour-long film, Heston: My Life With Bipolar, follows the aftermath of the chef's diagnosis as he explores the mental health condition and rebuilds his life.
The film will also explore the state of bipolar care in the UK as Blumenthal meets people to hear about their experiences and the challenges they face.
Blumenthal said: 'It took me 50 years to get a diagnosis, so it's been an extraordinary journey to get where I am today.
'There is still a big stigma around bipolar, but it is vital to be able to talk openly about the condition. I know this isn't always easy, but I hope by sharing my experience in this documentary people will gain a greater understanding of bipolar and an insight into my life now.'
Since his diagnosis, the TV personality, who has has been awarded seven Michelin stars over the course of his career, has become an ambassador for Bipolar UK, which describes the condition as an episodic disorder characterised by sometimes extreme changes in mood and energy which has the highest risk of suicide of any mental health condition.
Mike Radford, executive producer, said: 'This is the first time Heston has given his account of what happened for a documentary. We're grateful to Heston for giving such a raw and unfiltered view of his life with this condition, which we know impacts the lives of so many people.'
Filmed over six months, the film will include testimonies from Blumenthal and some of those closest to him about how his undiagnosed bipolar disorder affected his life and the challenges he faces undergoing long-term treatment for the condition, including its impact on his creativity and energy levels.
The chef, best known for his experimental dishes including snail porridge and bacon and egg ice cream, has previously said that the medication he has been taking for bipolar initially dulled his culinary imagination.
The film captures Blumenthal as he continues on his journey back to health and running his renowned restaurant, The Fat Duck, which has been awarded three Michelin stars.
The film is set to air on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer on Thursday June 19.

Last month I revealed the Say You'll Be There singers had rejected a personal approach from Louis to talk on the show. Now Cheryl Tweedy and her bandmates have followed suit. A TV insider said: 'This documentary has huge potential to be controversial — that's what viewers saw happen with Boybands Forever, which was made by the same team. 'It picked apart the many negative points associated with being in these pop groups, exposing divisions, bust-ups, resentments and recriminations. 'The concern for those groups taking part in the girlbands version is that it might end up doing similar. 'It now raises the question of how you can make a documentary about girl bands without two of the prime examples being a part of it.' Although the two biggest female groups of the era aren't contributing as talking heads, it's understood others still will be. They include members of Eternal, All Saints, Atomic Kitten and Sugababes. As with music mogul Simon Cowell's chat for last year's programme, some of the interviews will likely be face to face with Louis, whose production company Mindhouse is currently making the new show. In Boybands Forever, Robbie Williams discussed his turbulent time in Take That, and members of East 17, 911, Damage and 5ive all outlined the many issues that came with fame. But even a personal invite from Louis couldn't bag the Spice Girls or Girls Aloud, which is pretty tricky given that Mindhouse is hoping to have the project in the can and ready to air by this October. The Traitors winner and former Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins star Harry Clark was reportedly involved in a 'drunken scuffle' with a TikTok influencer following a recent showbiz event After viewers watched Harry Clark get the chop from Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, reports of a previous bust up and a glitzy bash came to light. The Traitors star exited the gruelling Channel 4 show at the midway point after being caught out. And now allegations have came to light on a boozy brawl involving Harry and a TikTok star at the Brit Awards. According to reports, the reality TV star had a 'drunken scuffle' with social media star Moe Osman at the awards ceremony in March. Sources claim the alleged incident saw Harry, 24, retaliate after being "antagonised" by the influencer. A source told The Sun that Moe, who is known as Hellacreps online, and Harry clashed at the event. They said: "Harry is clearly really enjoying being able to attend amazing events like the Brits but at the event he and Moe clashed. 'It got physical. It was a drunken scuffle. There is never a fight at that sort of thing so everyone was really shocked.' Following his exit from Celeb SAS, it was revealed that Harry has now joined Pause For Thought in a permanent role. He recently appeared on BBC Radio 2's long-running segment where he opened up about his religious beliefs. Joining Scott Mills live on air on Tuesday, he said: "I know that some of your listeners will know me from winning The Traitors, and I wanna know more about that next week but for now, for this Pause For Thought, I thought I'd tell you more about what makes me tick. So, I'm Harry, I'm 24, and I come from a massive family. "There's five of us children, I've got two brothers, two sisters and a mum and dad. Despite achieving something, I'm still just a normal kid from Slough who lives with his parents and sisters in a council house. "Both of my brothers have now moved out. Luckily, thanks to my mum, religion has always been a big part of my life and has helped me all the way through." He went on: "Faith has been, and it means a lot to me always and it's amazing to be a part of something bigger that is outside of myself. As soon as I could I decided I was off to North Yorkshire at the age of 16 to become an avionics technician, which is technically a helicopter engineer, which is easier to understand but it's still just as crazy as it sounds. "I'd never seen a helicopter before I left Slough, so becoming a helicopter engineer is the coolest thing ever." And speaking of his involvement in The Traitors, he said: "I was asked to go on Traitors series two, which to my surprise, I actually managed to win somehow. "Since then, it's been a rollercoaster of ups and downs and around summertime again last year, I seemed to lose myself mentally but then the thing that saved me for a second time was my faith. When I prayed, I didn't feel alone and I felt that there was something there for me just like there always has been."
