It's the first time the Longhorns have been No. 1 in the preseason poll. Texas was also the No. 1 ranked team in the coaches poll.
The Longhorns edged out the Nittany Lions for the No. 1 ranking after receiving 25 first-place votes to Penn State's 23 from a panel of 65 media members. It's the closest preseason vote since 1998, according to the Associated Press.
The SEC has the most teams ever by a conference in the preseason Top 25 with 10, one more than 2024 and feature four teams in the top 10 for the second consecutive year. There's plenty of Big Ten love as well as for the third straight year the conference has two of the top three teams and six in the Top 25.
The last team to begin the season No. 1 in the AP preseason poll and win a national title was Alabama in 2017.
The 2025 college football season begins on Aug. 23. The first premier matchup of the season will take place on Aug. 30 at Ohio Stadium when Ohio State hosts Texas in a rematch of last season's College Football Playoff semifinal.
The Buckeyes finished last season in the No. 1 spot after winning the national championship over Notre Dame. The Irish ended up at No. 2, their highest post-season ranking since 1993. Oregon landed at No. 3 after losing to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.

Is Jerry Jones the biggest problem for the Cowboys?

Yahoo Sports' Jason Fitz and Caroline Fenton discuss how the Dallas team owner continues to favor making headlines over winning on the field. View more Video Transcript But to your point about the Cowboys, I think to me it is abundantly clear, and I believe if my pulse on the Cowboys fan base is correct, I believe it is now becoming more and more clear to Dallas Cowboys fans. That as long as Jerry Jones is running this franchise and doing the drafting and making free agency decisions, this team will not win a Super Bowl, because Jerry Jones cares way too much about being in the headlines, about being the number one story than he does about actually winning. Because if Jerry Jones actually cared about winning, I don't believe Brian Schottenheimer would be the head coach of this organization. I believe Brian Schottenheimer is the head coach of this organization because Jerry Jones can't handle anybody else getting more publicity and more love and more credit for the Cowboys than he is. What do you do when you realize the owner of your favorite team just isn't a very good owner, you know, and there's nothing you can do. We could talk all day long about Jayden Daniels and what it meant for the resurgence of the Washington Commanders, but you have to acknowledge that that became a heck of a lot easier to accomplish when they cleaned house of everybody in the building. And simply being bad at your job isn't a reason that you're going to be. Forced to sell a team. So if you're a Panthers fan, guess what? You're gonna have Tepper forever until, you know, he decides he wants to go off and mess something else up. If you're a Cowboys fan, you're, you're sort of stuck with whatever this version of Jerry Jones is. I'm a, I'm a diehard Raiders fan. Everybody knows that. I'm stuck with whatever Mark Davis decides year in and year out. Like there is really nothing you can do. For all of the conversation about drafting and quarterbacks and GMs and head coaches, at the end of the day, culture is created from the top down. If the person that leads your Organization is just not good at identifying talent all the way down and then not good at staying out of the way, you suddenly end up being a fan of a team that stinks every single year. Jerry Jones at one point was incredible at his job and I'm not sure that there's been anybody more important to the modern NFL when it comes to modernization and branding. But if you want that, That's great, but if you want Jerry Jones right now to run your favorite football team, I think you're just looking at an abject disaster year in and year out. Close

Oregon's Jeremiah McClellan reveals reason for Ohio State commitment flip

Oregon's Jeremiah McClellan reveals reason for Ohio State commitment flip originally appeared on The Sporting News The Oregon Ducks have a solid cast of wide receivers heading into the 2025 NCAA season. One of their top options is Jeremiah McClellan, and back in 2023, he nearly wasn't coming to Oregon. He had initially committed to Ohio State, but later flipped his commitment, joining the Ducks instead. It was an interesting decision, especially with a crowded wide receiver room at Oregon. But after a recent fall workout ahead of the 2025 season, in a piece from Mario Nordi of Sports Illustrated, McClellan revealed why he made such a decision, and it has a lot to do with head coach Dan Lanning. "It was basically just the connection that Coach Lanning and the staff have here," McClellan said, "I really just didn't feel like I had that connection at Ohio State. So the connection I have here, and the way Coach Lanning and Coach Terry, Coach Stein, and the guys that recruited me, it just felt like family here." Not only is this a great endorsement of Lanning from McClellan, but it's a sign of a good organization that McClellan pointed out other coaches and also the recruiters who, eventually, helped convince him to come to Oregon over Ohio State. MORE: Oregon receives negative injury update involving 5-star freshman With the offensive line coach A'lique Terry and the offensive coordinator Will Stein playing a huge role in McClellan coming to Oregon, it was a group effort that helped the four-star receiver decide to join the Ducks over the Buckeyes in 2023. He didn't factor into the team much, hauling in just three receptions for 24 yards in 2024, but the 2025 season is one for McClellan to take the next step and become a contributor for the Oregon offense. With a new quarterback for the third year in a row after Dillon Gabriel departed for the NFL, being drafted by the Cleveland Browns, the Ducks will need to hope for a reestablished offense to pick up where they left off in 2024. McClellan came to Oregon thanks to Lanning, among other coaches on the staff. Lanning has led the Ducks to impressive offensive seasons year after year, and in 2025, McClellan could be a huge piece of that potent offense at Oregon, as they pursue a deep playoff run after a disappointing end to 2024. Longhorns first AP preseason No. 1 in history to be underdog in Week 1

It has never happened before. No preseason No. 1 in the AP Top 25 has been an underdog in Week 1. But that's exactly what the Texas Longhorns are. UT is a 2.5 point underdog to the Ohio State Buckeyes at the Horseshoe in Columbus, OH in the first week of the season, according to ESPN BET lines. According to ESPN BET, Texas-Ohio State as its most-bet college football game so far for the 2025 season. 54.1% have bet on Texas on the spread and 73.6% have bet on Texas in the money line, which is +115. If you use the US LBM Coaches Poll, this will also be the first time No. 1 and No. 2 have played each other in the first week of the season. ESPN College GameDay will be on hand. So will Fox Sports' Big Noon Kickoff. The game already has huge storylines. It is Arch Manning's first start as QB1. It features the defending national champion. It features college football's only back-to-back semifinalist. It is a rematch of last year's college football semifinal in the Cotton Bowl. Now it is historic in two ways.
