Aid Trucks Face Prolonged Congestion at Rafah as Israeli Restrictions Intensify
Long queues of aid trucks continue to build up at the Rafah crossing as Israeli authorities tighten restrictions on the flow of humanitarian supplies into the Gaza Strip, leaving critical relief stranded on the Egyptian side.
Convoys carrying food, fuel, and medical aid remain active despite the bottlenecks at Kerem Shalom — the only crossing Israel permits for humanitarian deliveries. On Sunday, the 11th convoy left for the crossing, including fuel trucks vital for running hospitals and pumping water, along with hundreds of tons of food and medical supplies.
Three trucks carrying hospital beds and medical equipment were turned back by Israeli forces without explanation. No official lists are provided to clarify such rejections, complicating aid coordination and prolonging shortages in Gaza, where a deepening humanitarian crisis has already left civilians struggling to access food, clean water, and medical care.
Last Thursday, only 64 out of 170 trucks dispatched were granted entry. Many of the refused consignments — including medicines and infant formula — return daily to the Rafah crossing, adding to the congestion.
Egyptian authorities, in coordination with the Egyptian and Palestinian Red Crescent Societies, continue to send hundreds of trucks daily in line with Gaza's urgent humanitarian needs. But aid agencies warn that persistent Israeli restrictions are blocking vital life-saving supplies from reaching civilians in the war-battered enclave.

UN Rapporteur Albanese urges UEFA to expel Israel from its competitions
UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese has called on Europe's football governing body, UEFA, to expel Israel from its competitions following the killing of Suleiman al-Obeid, a Palestinian footballer known as the "Palestinian Pele," who was shot dead by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip. "Time to expel its killers from competitions, UEFA," Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, posted on X. "Let's make sport apartheid and genocide free. One ball, one kick at a time," she added. Albanese's call came after the killing of former Palestine international Suleiman al-Obeid, 41, in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday. According to the Palestinian Football Association (PFA), Israeli forces "targeted people waiting for humanitarian aid," killing the retired Palestinian footballer. Francesca Albanese is one of the most outspoken critics of Israel's war of extermination and starvation in the Gaza Strip. She has faced sanctions from both the United States and Israel, yet remains steadfast in her principled stance in support of the Palestinian people and in calling for an end to the Israeli occupation. Born in Gaza City, Obeid was married and had five children. He played 24 international matches for Palestine's team. His death added to the mounting toll of sports figures and civilians killed amidst the ongoing genocidal Israeli war on Gaza. Liverpool Egyptian international star Mohamed Salah has criticised UEFA for posting a tribute to al-Obeid that did not mention the former international died after being hit by Israeli gunfire in Gaza. UEFA on Friday issued a brief message on X, paying homage to al-Obeid, with a statement that read: "Farewell to Suleiman al-Obeid, the 'Palestinian Pele'. A talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times." However, Salah found the tribute insufficient, with the Liverpool forward responding publicly, questioning, "Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?" Salah then shared a screenshot of UEFA's post on his Instagram account, with over 65 million followers, escalating the pressure on international sports bodies to clarify the circumstances of al-Obeid's death. Since the Gaza war began in October 2023, Israel's army has killed more than 61,000 Palestinians, including 662 people from the sport and scouting sector — 321 of them from the football community — according to the Palestinian Football Association (PFA). Egypt's Al-Sisi calls for comprehensive roadmap to develop media sector
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi on Sunday called for the creation of a comprehensive roadmap to develop the country's media sector, directing authorities to ensure the media has access to data and information, particularly during times of crisis. Al-Sisi made the comments during a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and the heads of the Supreme Council for Media Regulation, the National Press Authority, and the National Media Authority, his office said in a statement. The president praised the vital role of the Egyptian media in shaping national identity and public awareness. He affirmed the state's 'firm commitment to upholding freedom of expression and embracing all national viewpoints within the Egyptian media system, in a way that enhances pluralism and intellectual openness,' the statement said. Al-Sisi directed that a comprehensive roadmap be developed, with the help of specialised experts, to ensure the national media keeps pace with rapid global changes and can perform its mission in line with the state's modern direction. He also stressed the importance of providing data and information to the media, 'especially during times of crisis that capture public attention, so that topics are handled without exaggeration or understatement.' The president emphasised the need to rely on qualified young cadres for media work and to organise educational and training programmes for those in the field, with a focus on national security concepts and openness to different opinions to entrench the principle of 'opinion and the other opinion.' During the meeting, Al-Sisi was briefed on efforts to develop the Egyptian Radio and Television Union (Maspero) and modernise national press institutions. In this context, the president approved a cash allowance proposed by the government for journalists and directed that the issue of end-of-service benefits for Maspero employees be resolved.

Chad Opposition Leader Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison
Israa Farhan Former Chadian Prime Minister and prominent opposition figure Succès Masra has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being convicted of disseminating racist and xenophobic messages inciting violence, Reuters reported on Saturday, citing his lawyer. Masra, a staunch critic of President Mahamat Idriss Déby, served as prime minister in Déby's interim government for nearly five months before running against him in the May 2024 presidential election.
