BBC Antiques Roadshow guest left speechless as 'treasure' kept in spare bedroom given top value

More info An Antiques Roadshow expert couldn't hide her exhilaration after examining an "extraordinary" item that's kept in her family's spare bedroom. Kay was initially taken aback by the historical significance of the item, revealing: "Sheltering from a passing shower, and sheltering with an object which is, I feel almost radioactive with power. "It's a very interesting phenomenon to be this close to something that is really quite important. I'm recognising, immediately, the personal standard of Oliver Cromwell. "It's a name we all know but let's just put him into his place in history, he was one of the signatories to the death warrant for instance to Charles I. Very much involved with the regicide, killing of the king and then he became in 1653 what was known as the Lord Protector of England. "It was after the Civil War and he ran the country essentially from 1653 to 1658 and that is his importance in English history and why this object has such resonance." The owner of the historical piece then shared its background: "It was in a collection about seven years ago. My father actually bought the collection of militaria. (Image: BBC) "We now own it as a family, it's actually kept in one of our spare rooms and, as you say, it's one of those objects that make you tingle." Kay agreed: "It does make you tingle, because this is the standard that was part of the funeral procession of Cromwell's on November 23, 1658, and this was extraordinary. "Here was the non king being revered really as a king with a royal crown. It is an extraordinary image that we have here which was totally against everything that he stood for." She revealed the item's dramatic history, explaining it had been "stolen from the hearse by a young boy that was in the funeral crowd", with its inscription corroborating the tale. "Snatched from the funeral hearse! At that moment too, it's just brilliant," Kay enthused. The guest proudly mentioned: "My whole family's been into history for generations and my maternal grandparents are actually founding members of The Sealed Knot, the re-enactment society for the Civil War." To which Kay responded: "Which is amazing, what a coincidence! It was meant to end up with you." (Image: BBC) The guest then expressed a deep connection to the artefact: "Absolutely, I believe so. Because we're the kind of people who really want to look after it and preserve it and make sure it's seen by everyone it should be seen by for generations, I guess. "It's a real treasure, it's a pleasure to own." Kay praised the item's condition, noting it had been "beautifully restored" but emphasised the importance of proper care. The expert humorously suggested: "It does and however great your spare room is and I'm sure it has almost museum like qualities, I do think, even if it went on loan somewhere, I think it deserves to be looked after." The expert was visibly challenged by a unique item's worth, noting: "And as far as value's concerned, this is about the trickiest thing I've ever had to value. "It is certain to fetch £25,000 but how much more would it go?" Overwhelmed by the valuation, the guest stood there astonished, while the valuer Kay expressed her elation: "It's going to take me a little while to come down from this. "It'll take a couple of bars of chocolate and a cup of tea but this has been a really special moment with a really extraordinary object, don't you agree?" Antiques Roadshow is available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

But his strong work ethic caught the eye of Maria Mendoza, who posted a video on TikTok after she noticed his attire. She was moved by his decision to delay a well-earned break to work towards his dreams and decided to launch a GoFundMe to help bolster his college funds. The 20 second clip was soon viewed more than three million times. Mendoza wrote: "While many graduates spent the night celebrating with friends and family, one young man quietly showed the world what determination looks like. "Just after receiving his diploma — still proudly wearing his medals — he reported to his shift at Burger King. "He didn't do it for attention. He doesn't even know his story went viral. "But thousands of people were moved by his dedication, humility, and work ethic." Mendoza had just seen her own daughter graduate that same day when she spotted him hard at work in Burger King. Former homeless World's Strongest Man competitor shows his intense training as he bids for success in the USA She added: "Let's get together as a community and support this young kid. "All funds raised will go directly toward helping him with college tuition, books, supplies, and other educational needs. "Let's show him that the world is watching—and rooting for him." The fundraiser has now gathered nearly $45,000 for Baker to make his college dreams a reality. Mendoza returned to the same Burger King this week to present Baker with the donations. "His dedication and quiet strength really moved me. I felt called to do something to recognise that," she told local outlet 11 Alive. "I'm just grateful I got to do something for him." The teen was moved to tears at generosity, revealing the financial uncertainty he had felt after finishing high school. He told Mendoza's TikTok followers how much their kindness meant to him in an emotional message. "Thank you so much, I was thinking of taking a gap year because I didn't have money for school, but thank you to all of you now, I might actually go straight to technical college and get my mechanical," he said. "I never thought this would happen to me, I'm very thankful." 5 The fundraiser has now gathered nearly $45,000 for Baker to make his college dreams a reality Credit: tiktok

Elden Ring live-action movie officially announced and it sounds promising

A film adaptation of FromSoftware's Elden Ring is in the works, with George R.R. Martin on board as a producer. After rumours emerged earlier this month, FromSoftware has officially announced it is partnering with A24 to make a live-action film adaptation of Elden Ring. As announced in a press release, Alex Garland will write and direct the project. He's best known for directing films like Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Civil War, but he's also served as writer on several Danny Boyle films, specifically Sunshine, 28 Days Later, and its upcoming sequel 28 Years Later. Garland has worked on video games too, serving as a co-writer on 2010's Enslaved: Odyssey To The West and a story supervisor on 2013's DmC: Devil May Cry. George R.R. Martin, who contributed to the story of Elden Ring alongside the game's director Hidetaka Miyazaki, is a producer on the film. He's joined by Game Of Thrones producer Vince Gerardis, Peter Rice, and Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich from DNA Films. Interestingly, Miyazaki's name isn't mentioned, which suggests he's not involved. Speaking to The Guardian last year, he expressed his interest in making a film adaptation of Elden Ring but said he doesn't think he has the 'knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium'. Adapting Elden Ring's dark fantasy world to live-action will certainly be a challenge, but the biggest task might be translating the game's lore into a tight narrative, unless it opts to tell its own story within the same universe. More Trending Between Garland and Martin though, this is probably the most promising film based on a video game currently in development. Others in the works include a BioShock movie at Netflix, a new Street Fighter movie, a Death Stranding film, OutRun with Sydney Sweeney, along with countless more. There is no indication of when the Elden Ring film will be released, or when it will start shooting, so it will likely be a few years away yet. This announcement comes a week ahead of Elden Ring: Nightreign, a roguelike multiplayer spin-off which is set to launch on May 30 across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
