Elden Ring live-action movie officially announced and it sounds promising
A film adaptation of FromSoftware's Elden Ring is in the works, with George R.R. Martin on board as a producer.
After rumours emerged earlier this month, FromSoftware has officially announced it is partnering with A24 to make a live-action film adaptation of Elden Ring.
As announced in a press release, Alex Garland will write and direct the project. He's best known for directing films like Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Civil War, but he's also served as writer on several Danny Boyle films, specifically Sunshine, 28 Days Later, and its upcoming sequel 28 Years Later.
Garland has worked on video games too, serving as a co-writer on 2010's Enslaved: Odyssey To The West and a story supervisor on 2013's DmC: Devil May Cry.
George R.R. Martin, who contributed to the story of Elden Ring alongside the game's director Hidetaka Miyazaki, is a producer on the film. He's joined by Game Of Thrones producer Vince Gerardis, Peter Rice, and Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich from DNA Films.
Interestingly, Miyazaki's name isn't mentioned, which suggests he's not involved. Speaking to The Guardian last year, he expressed his interest in making a film adaptation of Elden Ring but said he doesn't think he has the 'knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium'.
Adapting Elden Ring's dark fantasy world to live-action will certainly be a challenge, but the biggest task might be translating the game's lore into a tight narrative, unless it opts to tell its own story within the same universe. More Trending
Between Garland and Martin though, this is probably the most promising film based on a video game currently in development. Others in the works include a BioShock movie at Netflix, a new Street Fighter movie, a Death Stranding film, OutRun with Sydney Sweeney, along with countless more.
There is no indication of when the Elden Ring film will be released, or when it will start shooting, so it will likely be a few years away yet.
This announcement comes a week ahead of Elden Ring: Nightreign, a roguelike multiplayer spin-off which is set to launch on May 30 across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

'Lilo & Stitch' passes 'Sinners' to become 2nd highest grossing film of 2025
'Lilo & Stich' and 'Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning' dominated the box office charts again after fueling a record-breaking Memorial Day weekend. Theaters in the U.S. and Canada had several new films to offer this weekend as well, including Sony's family friendly 'Karate Kid: Legends' and the A24 horror movie 'Bring Her Back. ' According to studio estimates Sunday, it added up to a robust $145 million post-holiday weekend that's up over 115% from the same timeframe last year. Disney's live-action hybrid 'Lilo & Stitch' took first place again with $63 million from 4,410 locations in North America. It was enough to pass 'Sinners' to become the second-highest grossing movie of the year with $280.1 million in domestic ticket sales. Globally, it's running total is $610.8 million. ' Sinners,' meanwhile, is still going strong in its seventh weekend with another $5.2 million, bumping it to $267.1 million domestically and $350.1 million globally. The eighth 'Mission: Impossible' movie also repeated in second place, with $27.3 million from 3,861 locations. As with 'Lilo & Stitch,' that's down 57% from its opening. With $122.6 million in domestic tickets sold, it's performing in line with the two previous installments. But with a reported production budget of $400 million, profitability is a ways off. Internationally, it added $76.1 million (including $25.2 million from China where it just opened), bringing its global total to $353.8 million. Leading the newcomers was Sony's 'Karate Kid: Legends,' with an estimated $21 million from 3,809 locations. The movie brings Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio together to train a new kid, the kung fu prodigy Li Fong ( Ben Wang ). Chan starred in a 2010 reboot of the 1984 original, while Macchio has found a new generation of fans in the series 'Cobra Kai,' which just concluded a six-season run. Reviews might have been mixed, but opening weekend audiences gave the PG-13 rated film a strong A- CinemaScore and 4.5 stars on PostTrak. It also only cost a reported $45 million to produce and has several weeks until a new family-friendly film arrives. Fourth place went 'Final Destination: Bloodlines,' which earned $10.8 million in its third weekend. The movie is the highest-grossing in the franchise, not accounting for inflation, with $229.3 million globally. The weekend's other big newcomer, 'Bring Her Back' rounded out the top five with $7.1 million from 2,449 screens. Starring Sally Hawkins as a foster mother with some disturbing plans, the film is the sophomore feature of twin filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou, who made the 2023 horror breakout 'Talk to Me.' It earned a rare-for-horror B+ CinemaScore and is essentially the only new film in the genre until '28 Years Later' opens on June 20. A new Wes Anderson movie, 'The Phoenician Scheme,' also debuted in New York and Los Angeles this weekend, where it made $270,000. It expands nationwide next weekend. The summer box office forecast remains promising, though there's a long way to go to get to the $4 billion target (a pre-pandemic norm that only the 'Barbenheimer' summer has surpassed). The month of May is expected to close out with $973 million – up 75% from May 2024, according to data from Comscore.

Amazon quietly adds 'simply perfect' horror movie
It was a huge hit with fans and critics alike Amazon Prime has finally added what fans are calling the 'best horror film of 2024', described as a 'masterclass in suspense'. Heretic, which appeared on the platform's coming soon list over a month ago, is now available for streaming at no extra cost to Prime subscribers from today (June 1). The film created quite a buzz when it hit cinemas last year, featuring iconic British actor Hugh Grant in an unexpected role that earned him a BAFTA nomination for Best Leading Actor. The plot centres around two young missionaries who find themselves caught in a deadly game of cat and mouse after knocking on the door of the sinister Mr. Reed (Grant). Trapped in his house, they must rely on their faith to escape alive. Written and directed by filmmaking duo Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, known for writing the original A Quiet Place together, their latest project was equally well received, earning a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reports the Daily Record. One verified reviewer said it 'messes with your mind'. Fans continue to heap praise on the film, with many claiming it is the 'hands down, best horror movie of 2024.' Viewers have been raving about the psychological thriller Heretic, with one commenting: "Thought-provoking. Somewhere between Saw, Cube, and 10 Cloverfield Lane, wrapped in a 'crisis of faith' theme. In 2022 twins Danny and Michael Philippou made their feature film debut with the movie Talk to Me, which starred Sophie Wilde and followed a group of teenagers discovering they can contact spirits using a mysterious severed and embalmed hand. After being released in Australia, it was eventually rolled out in the United States by A24 and became a massive success. Critics called it 'original', 'compelling' and 'brutal', with the film grossing grossed $92million (£67million) worldwide against a production budget of $4.5million (£3.3million), becoming A24's highest-grossing horror film ever. Before releasing this movie, the brothers were best known online as RackaRacka – sharing horror comedy videos on YouTube. They currently have 6.88 million followers. Two years on from their feature filmed hitting screens around the world, they have returned with Bring Her Back, which will likely leave viewers just as unsettled. Ahead of its release, the synopsis of Bring Her Back teased the plot, which is about 'grief and resurrection'. 'A brother and sister uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother,' it reads. Set in the outer suburbs of the sleepy city of Adelaide, the film begins with teenager Andy (Billy Barratt) and his legally blind sister Piper (Sora Wong) facing the sudden death of their father. With Andy just a few months away from being able to legally care for his sister, they are temporarily placed in a foster home with Laura (Sally Hawkins), who is already caring for Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips), who is mute after also losing his family in tragic circumstances. It quickly emerges she's completely unhinged and obsessed with the occult, with the siblings then facing a string of shocking events. Running at 1 hour, 39 minutes, Bring Her Back also stars Sally-Anne Upton, Stephen Phillips, Mischa Heywood, Liam Damons and Olga Miller. After co-host Sarah Harris jokingly asked the pair 'what is wrong with them' after creating a movie with so many jump scares, they spilled on how scared some people had been. 'We've had three faintings at the screenings,' Danny admitted. On Reddit one viewer even declared: 'This movie was so shocking I almost threw up in the car park.' In a recent interview with Variety, the Philippou's (who self-identify as 'bogans') reflected on the lack of belief in them just a few years ago. 'RackaRacka was a talking point in meetings, but not a good one,' Danny admitted. 'They just didn't think we could do a movie. To be fair, we weren't making deep stuff on YouTube.' However, after the success of Talk to Me, they managed to convince Sally to sign up to their follow-up, the actress' first time starring in a horror. She had also even watched their YouTube videos too. 'She enjoyed them! People said our energies weren't going to match, but we got along so well,' Danny shared. He also revealed that they took Sally out during filming to prank some neighbours in preparation for a scene. Early reviews have been coming in for the movie, which hits screens later this week. 'Bring Her Back captures the darkness and fear of losing someone, all while making one of the year's best horror films. It's that mixture, like with Talk to Me, that makes Danny and Michael Philippou two of the most exciting filmmakers in the genre,' Collider wrote in its review. 'The Philippous work in a mode that's impressionistic in an accomplished enough way to justify itself. They don't care about tying up every bloody loose end. They're after a feeling, a lavish sensation of malevolent shock,' Variety shared. 'Bring Her Back is as unutterably sad as it is disturbingly frightening… Michael and Danny Philippou may just be the premiere horror auteurs in Australia after only two films,' The Curb added. Since being released a few days ago, fans have rushed to share their thoughts on the movie, which currently holds an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. 'I went into this movie not having a clue what it was going to be about, and it was absolutely shocking and disturbing in all the best ways. Being an avid horror fan, it is extremely hard to make me look away from the screen …but there were several moments I had to in this movie. 'Despite the extremely gory scenes it had, the storyline and acting itself was brilliant. It wove an absolutely heartbreaking trauma-filled narrative into a movie you won't soon be able to forget, if ever. 'Destined to rank in some of the most legendary disturbing horror film top 10 lists,' user NMP posted on the review site. More Trending 'A horror film that breaks your heart.
