Over 3 lakh children to be administered deworming tablets in Eluru district
Eluru DM&HO P.J. Amrutam in a press release on Monday said that a total of 3,76,263 children will be administered Albendazole tablets to eliminate intestinal worms, such as roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms, with the aim of improving their overall health and development. Children between the age of 1 to 2 would be given half a tablet (200 mg), while those between 2 and 19 full tablet (400 mg).
The programme will be implemented through ASHA workers, anganwadi staff, and ANMs in primary and upper primary schools, and through male and female health supervisors in high schools, residential schools, ashram schools, model schools, KGBVs, gurukuls, minority institutions, intermediate colleges, and degree colleges. The tablets will be given after lunch.
Teachers, cooks, and staff will be given the tablets first, followed by the students. For those absent on August 12, a 'Mop-up Day' will be conducted on August 20 to ensure complete coverage. The initiative will be monitored at the primary health centre (PHC) level by medical officers and at the mandal level by Mandal Education Officers and CDPOs (Anganwadi Project Officers).
Departments including Education, Medical and Health, Women and Child Welfare, Rural Development, Zilla Parishad, Municipal Commissioners, Welfare Hostel authorities, and other concerned officials will participate to ensure 100 per cent implementation of the programme, she added.

Andhra Pradesh government approves gratuity, maternity leave, and higher retirement age for ASHAs
In line with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's announcement in March this year, the Andhra Pradesh government on Tuesday, August 12, approved key welfare measures for Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) — including gratuity, paid maternity leave, and an increase in their retirement age. According to an official press release from the Department of Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare, the government will provide gratuity of up to ₹5,000 per year, amounting to a total of ₹1.5 lakh at the time of retirement. With around 43,000 ASHAs in the State, the annual outlay for gratuity will amount to ₹645 crore. The government has also sanctioned six months of paid maternity leave for the first two deliveries and increased the retirement age for ASHAs from 60 to 62 years — addressing long-standing demands that had led to State-wide protests towards the end of 2023. Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Minister Satya Kumar Yadav thanked the Chief Minister for sanctioning the gratuity funds despite the State's financial challenges, noting that the decision reflects a strong commitment to the welfare of ASHA workers.

Deworming key to complete health, says Eluru Collector
Deworming is essential to achieve complete health, said District Collector K. Vetriselvi on the occasion of National Deworming Day on Tuesday (August 12, 2025). The Collector launched a campaign by administering Albendazole tablets to students. Speaking on the occasion, she said that those who miss taking the tablets on Tuesday (August 12) will be covered on August 18 through a mop-up programme. Worm infestations, she noted, pose a serious obstacle to children's physical and mental development. Intestinal worms can cause anaemia, loss of appetite, weight loss, and other health issues. Taking Albendazole effectively eliminates the worms, paving the way for a healthier life, she said. District Medical and Health Officer Dr. P.J. National Deworming Day: Over 200 girl students given tablets in Kashi school
Varanasi: Chief medical officer Dr Sandeep Chaudhary inaugurated the National Deworming Day programme on Monday at the Composite School in Mahmoorganj. The programme began with administering albendazole to 229 female students. The CMO emphasised that personal hygiene and cleanliness are crucial for a healthy future and better health. Parents should wholeheartedly support such health campaigns conducted by the health department from time to time. He urged children to understand that worms in the stomach can result from open defecation, eating without washing hands, having untrimmed nails, and lack of cleanliness. Therefore, everyone should wash their hands thoroughly after using the toilet and before eating. He stated that to prevent worms, children aged 1 to 19 years are given the medicine to relieve them from worms and ensure continuous physical and intellectual development. This pill is administered once every six months. The CMO said that worms in the stomach can lead to malnutrition in children , causing anaemia and resulting in weakness. Additional chief medical officer and programme nodal officer Dr Sanjay Rai said that on National Deworming Day, approximately 10 lakh children were given medicine across all schools and Anganwadi centres in the district. For children who missed taking the medicine on this day, a mop-up round will be organised on Aug 14. The aim is to cover all left-out children with the medicine and achieve 100 per cent target completion. He informed the children about the symptoms of worm infection, such as diarrhoea, stomach pain, weakness, vomiting, and loss of appetite. School principal Preeti appreciated the organisation for the initiative.
