Indian Railways tests first hydrogen-powered coach: What does the project entail?
The ICF project is significant for the Railways as it is one of the key players in India's mission to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase the share of renewable energy in its energy mix. An increased use of hydrogen, which is a cleaner fuel, will further reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Officials said that the project has reached the final stage, wherein testing of various equipment is being done before hydrogen-powered trains are pressed into commercial service.
Indian Railways' Northern Railway zone has undertaken this project which began in 2020-21. The project has two major components. First, the conversion of two conventional 1600 HorsePower (HP) diesel power cars into hydrogen fuel cell-powered traction system, and second, setting up a hydrogen storage and fuelling facility at Jind in Haryana.
The total cost of the project is approximately Rs. 136 crore. The primary design, validation, and testing is being undertaken by Indian Railways' Research Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO).
A senior official of the Ministry of Railways said that the hydrogen train project was conceptualised for conversion of a 10-coach diesel-electric multiple unit (DEMU) into a hydrogen-powered multiple unit, with two 1600 HP Power cars. With a train length of 10 coaches, it will have a capacity to carry more than 2,600 passengers.
It has been planned to operate the hydrogen train between Jind and Sonepat stations of Northern Railway in Haryana, two round-trips of 356 km. The hydrogen storage and fueling facility at Jind will have a storage capacity of 3,000 kg of Hydrogen.
Hydrogen fuel technology is still an emerging field in Railways. There are many challenges and safety concerns, too, as hydrogen is a highly flammable gas. As the project involves the retro-fitment of two diesel-powered cars into Hydrogen fuel cell-powered cars, each power car will carry 220 kg of hydrogen, stored in specially designed cylinders at 350 bar pressure. The mounting structure of hydrogen cylinders and fuel cells is critical and for that, multiple rounds of testing are on.
Hydrogen is the lightest element. It is colourless, odourless, tasteless, and highly flammable. Due to its typical characteristics, safety remains a point of caution while dealing with hydrogen. Officials said that to minimise the risk, Railways have done computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies, wherein the worst cases of hydrogen leak and other failure modes are considered with continuous monitoring.
The official further said that an extensive testing of all in-house equipment like vehicle control system, boost converter, traction converter, auxiliary converter, and traction motor have been successfully completed. The hydrogen train will include safety features such as pressure relief valves, leak detection, flame detection sensors, temperature detection systems, and scientifically designed ventilation.
An independent third-party safety auditor – 'Technischer Überwachungsverein Süd' (TUV-SUD) of Germany has been roped in for ensuring the safety standards. The engineering design and conversion work is being undertaken at ICF, Chennai by Hyderabad-based Medha Servo Drives.
The 3,000-kg hydrogen fuelling facility at Jind will provide the required hydrogen for the operation of the hydrogen-powered train. The storage capacity has been divided into two separate storage spaces — 2320 kg at low pressure and 680 kg at high pressure.
The facility will be operated and maintained in accordance with the standards and specification of Petroleum Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO), a nodal agency under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
Officials said that Northern Railway is undertaking the associated infrastructure works such as power supply, road construction, firefighting tank, etc, to make the facility operational.

ED restitutes properties worth Rs 386 crore in Karnala Bank scam
The Enforcement Directorate(ED) in Mumbai has restituted immovable properties valued at Rs 386 crore to the Competent Authority under the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors (MPID) Act in connection with the financial fraud involving Karnala Nagari Sahakari Bank, Panvel. The restitution aims to compensate depositors who suffered financial losses due to a large-scale properties were earlier provisionally attached by the ED under Section 5 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), following investigations that revealed the erstwhile chairperson, in collusion with other bank officials, orchestrated a fraud involving forged documents and bogus loan accounts. According to an FIR filed by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW), CID, Pune, on February 17, 2020, 63 fictitious loan accounts were created, through which Rs 560 crore was siphoned off for private investigations under PMLA established that the diverted funds were funneled into various entities linked to Vivekanand Shankar Patil and his relatives. The laundered proceeds were used to acquire immovable properties across Raigad District in Maharashtra. These assets, worth Rs 386 crore, were attached on August 17, 2021, and October 12, 2023. A prosecution complaint was filed on August 12, 2021, before the Hon'ble Special Court, PMLA, and the trial is currently ongoing. In response to a restitution application filed under Section 8(8) of PMLA by the RBI-appointed liquidator, the ED granted its consent. The PMLA Special Court, Mumbai, through its order dated July 22, 2025, directed the release of the property located at Karnala Sports Academy, Panvel, to the liquidator for auction. The court also instructed the Competent Authority, MPID, to auction land situated at Posari, Raigad, and distribute the proceeds among affected Nagari Sahakari Bank had over 5 lakh depositors with total deposits amounting to Rs 553 crore. These depositors lost their savings due to the fraudulent activities of the bank's management. In view of the scale of public loss and to expedite recovery for the victims, the ED has taken proactive steps resulting in the current restitution of assets.- Ends

Railways rolls out Kavach 4.0 on Mathura-Kota section for safety boost
Indian Railways has commissioned its indigenous anti-collision system, Kavach, on the Mathura–Kota section of the rail network — part of the Delhi–Mumbai route, one of the highest-density corridors in India. 'Many developed nations took 20–30 years to develop and install train protection systems. The commissioning of Kavach 4.0 (the latest version) on the Kota–Mathura section has been achieved in a very short timeframe. This is a very big achievement,' Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Wednesday. The Ministry of Railways said it will commission Kavach 4.0 on various routes across the country within a short span of six years. 'Over 30,000 people have already been trained on Kavach systems. The Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications (IRISET) has signed memorandums of understanding with 17 AICTE-approved engineering colleges, institutions and universities for incorporating Kavach as part of their BTech course curriculum,' it said. Kavach will assist loco pilots in maintaining train speed through effective brake application. Even in low-visibility conditions such as fog, loco pilots will not have to look outside from the cabin for signals — the information will be displayed on a dashboard inside the cab. The indigenous anti-collision system, which initially saw slow progress — attributed by the government to the project's complexity — has become central to the discourse on rail safety, especially after major incidents like the Balasore train crash in 2023, which claimed nearly 300 lives. 'Indian Railways invests more than Rs 1 trillion per year on safety-related activities. Kavach is one of the many initiatives taken to enhance the safety of passengers and trains. The progress made and the pace of deployment of Kavach reflect the commitment of Indian Railways towards ensuring railway safety,' the railways said.

Now, 1% stamp duty relief to women buyers on properties up to Rs 1 crore
Noida: Women purchasing a house or land worth up to Rs 1 crore will now get 1% waiver on stamp duty, with UP cabinet last week revising the cap on properties eligible for the rebate from the previous Rs 10 lakh. In Noida and Ghaziabad, one has to pay 6-7% of the total cost of a flat in stamp duty and an additional 1% as a processing fee for registration. With the revised limit coming into effect on July 29, women can save up to Rs 1 lakh during property registration. AIG-2 (stamp department) Brijesh Kumar told TOI that nearly 30% of all properties registered per month in Noida are owned by women. Of the 1.8 lakh properties registered across the district in the 2024-25 fiscal year (FY), over 73,000 were owned by women. Real estate experts said the rebate would benefit the mid-segment market, which mostly attracts first-time buyers. "It not only incentivises women to take a more active role in property ownership but also signals a broader shift towards financial empowerment and gender equity in real estate. This initiative will encourage joint ownership, increase formal asset holding among women, and contribute to inclusive growth in the sector," Vipul Giri, president of CREDAI's Ghaziabad chapter, said. New Era Flat Owners Welfare Association (NEFOWA) president Abhishek Kuma told TOI that the rebate would benefit buyers who were waiting to register their properties, but new homebuyers may not feel the cushion as the cost of a 3BHK in Noida currently exceeds the Rs 1-crore threshold. "In Greater Noida, there are at least 30,000 flats in the range of Rs 60-70 lakh awaiting registry. So, a woman buyer could get a Rs 60,000 to Rs 70,000 rebate in stamp duty. However, the cost of flats in most new residential projects is now are above Rs 1 crore. The cap should have been at least Rs 2 crore for Noida, where affordable housing is an issue," Kumar said. Some homebuyers also pointed out that in Delhi, women pay only 4% stamp duty on the property value or circle rate, whichever is higher, while men are required to pay 6%, regardless of the property's price. Meanwhile, state stamp and registration minister Ravindra Jaiswal has directed all districts to revise circle rates to bring them on par with the prevailing market rate of properties. In Ghaziabad, the stamp department is currently conducting a survey to revise the circle rates. The final draft of the circle rates revision awaits approval from the district magistrate in Noida.
