
Ireland's electricity grid struggles with increased supply from renewables
Ireland's electrical distribution system – the grid – is now creaking under the pressure of handling the rapidly growing supply of electrical power from
renewable wind and solar energy
sources.
Electricity is the movement of electrons in a conductor, usually a copper wire. We have known about one form of electricity, static electricity (accumulation of electrical charge on surfaces), since the Ancient Greeks (600 BC). Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) proposed that electricity has positive and negative components and flows between them.
And in 1831, Michael Faraday (1791-1867), a largely self-taught genius, demonstrated electromagnetic induction by demonstrating that a changing magnetic field induces electrical current to flow in an adjacent copper wire. This led to the invention of the first electric dynamo, a crude electricity generator and the basis for the method whereby all electricity is now generated.

Alternating current (AC) varies in direction of flow and in magnitude, as opposed to direct current (DC) that flows only in one direction. Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) invented the AC motor and transformer – and AC is the standard for power transmission/use today.
Traditionally, we generated electricity by converting the chemical energy stored in coal, oil and natural gas (fossil fuels) into electricity in power stations and distributing this electricity around the country via the grid.
Burning fossil fuels releases warming carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Electricity generated by wind turbines on wind farms and by capturing sunlight on photovoltaic receptors does not release carbon dioxide and increasingly supplement fossil fuel generated electricity nowadays. The aim is to become entirely independent of fossil fuels as soon as possible – 'net zero' carbon emissions.
The basic architecture of national grids was established when sources of primary power were restricted to fossil fuels. Grids have been extended/improved since that time, but now struggle to cope with recent greatly-increased inputs of electricity from solar and wind power.
We take reliability of electrical supply for granted and, so, the recent Iberian Peninsula electrical system shutdown last April, leaving the entire Spanish and Portuguese mainland without power for several hours, was a salutary reminder of our reliance on the grid.

The Spanish government has issued a report stating this shutdown was triggered by operator mismanagement and not by difficulties in accommodating electricity generated by solar and wind power.
Problems with the UK grid were recently outlined by Justin Rowlatt on BBC News. He cited a typical example of the problem – on June 1st and 3rd this year, near gale-force winds blew into Scotland's Moray Firth wind farms 21km off the northeast coast.
Operating at maximum capacity, these wind farms should generate enough electricity to meet the needs of well more than one million homes, but the grid is sometimes unable to accommodate their output. Ocean Winds, the company that built and operates the Moray Firth wind farms, was paid £72,000 (€83,000) not to generate power during a 30-minute period on June 3rd. Power output was restricted several times that day.
Such payments are made most days in the UK and also arise in Ireland. Seagreen, Scotland's largest wind farm, was paid £65 million (€75 million) last year to restrict output 71 per cent of the time and, so far this year, such balancing of the grid has cost the UK more than £500 million (€574 million).
The UK National Electricity System Operator warns the total cost could approach £8 billion (€9.1 billion) a year by 2030. This pushes up everybody's energy bills and contradicts government promises that achieving net zero would also deliver cheaper electricity.
The UK operates a single national electricity market. Its government was considering breaking this into smaller regional markets, hoping to make the system more efficient and deliver cheaper bills. This seemed sensible but in July it announced it was dropping the plan.
The UK and Ireland need to build more transmission capacity quickly and new grid architecture must be planned well in advance to attract investors to build these assets in a timely fashion. At present, very cumbersome planning systems greatly delay grid developments in both countries. Current planning protocols must be urgently reformed.

The Irish Times view on Ireland's AI future: the clock is ticking
Given the scale of the claims being made for artificial intelligence, it is striking how slow the Oireachtas has been to give the subject sustained attention. AI is routinely described as having the potential to transform society, disrupt the global political order and even alter what it means to be human. Yet it was only this year that the Joint Committee on Artificial Intelligence began its work, holding its first public session in June. This week its chair, Fianna Fáil TD Malcolm Byrne, set out his thinking on what must happen next. Byrne believes Ireland could position itself as 'the AI island' but warns that the opportunity will be lost without swift and decisive action. He says he would be disappointed if both a new AI office and an AI observatory are not operational by next year. The office will be tasked with implementing the EU's AI Act, while the observatory will assess the technology's effects, from employment disruption to identifying future skills needs. In Byrne's view, those who embrace AI will displace those who do not, whether they are doctors, architects or lawyers. He welcomes the Government's plan for an AI summit during Ireland's EU presidency in 2026 and argues for clear ethical frameworks in education, where students are already using AI tools. He also points to the technology's current uses in Ireland, from automating recycling processes to analysing tax data. Such calls for urgency are sensible and overdue. But preparing the State for the changes ahead will require far more than offices, observatories and summits. The debate is complicated by the sweeping and often speculative claims surrounding AI, from the elimination of entire job categories to science-fiction visions of superintelligent machines destroying the human race. This discourse is unfolding against the backdrop of a global investment surge, with leading AI companies commanding extraordinary valuations and data centres proliferating at breakneck speed. History suggests such frenzies rarely end without turbulence. READ MORE Byrne's proposals are shaped by the EU's AI Act, which will impose a detailed regulatory roadmap over the coming years. That approach contrasts sharply with the let it rip stance favoured by Donald Trump's administration in the US, and with the UK's less prescriptive, more innovation-oriented strategy. Which philosophy will prove more effective is an open question but the divergence will have real consequences for competitiveness. If Ireland is serious about becoming 'the AI island', it must reckon with the reality that others are moving faster and with considerable resources. Ambition is necessary, but so too is a clear-eyed appraisal of the scale of the challenge and the pace of change. Without that, the island will be an observer, not a leader, in the age of AI.

‘Take some time to look up': Perseid meteor shower could be visible tonight
One of the most eagerly awaited astronomical events of the year – which promises one or two meteors or 'shooting stars' a minute – is set to dominate Irish skies on Tuesday night. Gazers of the Perseid meteor shower could see about 60 meteors an hour darting across Tuesday's night sky – weather and light pollution permitting. Met Éireann forecasts clear spells for most, though cloudier conditions are expected to build in the south. In urban areas, where light pollution can hinder sight of the night sky, those hoping to catch a glimpse can still expect a decent show, said astronomer Danielle Wilcox from Blackrock Castle Observatory, Cork. The Perseid meteors are caused by dust particles shed by the comet, Swift-Tuttle. The comet, which takes 133 years to orbit the sun, was last seen in Irish skies in 1992. At this time of year, Earth moves through this debris cloud, making one of the most celebrated astronomical events and arguably the most predictable. Particles from the debris cloud subsequently burn up on entering Earth's atmosphere and create flashes of light. While the shower is active for several weeks, it peaks on the night of August 12th. 'It's such a special time of the year,' Ms Wilcox said. With a caveat to ease heightened expectations, she said the public would not see 'thousands of stars falling from the sky', but could see one or two meteors a minute. The Perseids take their name from the constellation of Perseus, from where they appear to spread in all directions, and towards which Ms Wilcox advised looking on Tuesday night. 'It's a really good meteor shower in particular because it gives us a lot of meteors per hour compared to other meteor showers,' she said. With about 60 meteors an hour, 'you're almost guaranteed, if you sit out and look up for a few minutes, to see a meteor,' she said. 'That's what's so exciting about it, especially for people who have never seen 'shooting stars', this is your chance to get out there and see that,' she said. The number per hour can rise to 100 for those under 'really, really dark skies'. She said August's full moon, known as a Sturgeon Moon, might hinder sight of the less bright meteors, but it was 'luckily' becoming less bright and was rising later. This provided an optimal window, between sunset and moonrise, for stargazers to look north and catch a glimpse of the shower. 'Take some time to look up,' she said.

Move to ease climate targets criticised for allowing continued high methane emissions
Climate scientists have criticised Ireland over proposed measures that would weaken the country's commitments to reducing methane emissions. Countries that export livestock – including Ireland and New Zealand – have proposed a new approach to climate targets, known as 'temperature neutrality'. Scientists say this method would undermine efforts to create a sustainable global food system as it allows countries to maintain high agricultural methane emissions while claiming to meet climate targets. A study containing the warning, published in Environmental Research Letters today, was led by University of Galway researchers with input from scientists at University College Cork (UCC) , University of Melbourne, and Climate Resource, which models climate scenarios. [ Scientists accuse Ireland of 'accounting trick' to justify livestock emissions Opens in new window ] 'If every country adopted a temperature neutrality target, we'd seriously jeopardise the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees or even 2 degrees,' said lead researcher Dr Colm Duffy, a lecturer in agri-sustainability at University of Galway. 'Worse still, this approach doesn't just weaken climate ambition, it entrenches inequality,' he added. 'It protects the status quo for wealthy countries while placing an unfair burden on poorer, food-insecure countries, limiting their ability to grow their own food systems.' This approach, the research concludes, 'dramatically reduces the level of ambition needed for overall greenhouse-gas emission reduction'. Revised targets using the new method were proposed to the Government by the Climate Change Advisory Council , an independent body, in part to reduce potential disruption from Ireland's legal commitment to achieve national 'climate neutrality' by 2050. [ The difference between 'net zero' emissions and 'temperature neutrality' ] It is understood the concept is favoured by the Department of Agriculture , but the Government has yet to adopt it. Minister for Climate and Energy Darragh O'Brien has told the Oireachtas climate committee he has 'not formed a definitive view on that one way or the other'. All views from experts, 'who will have different views on this', will be assessed in determining carbon budgets later this year, he said. Temperature neutrality is based on stabilising a country's contribution to global warming rather than aiming for the more demanding existing target of net zero emissions. [ Ireland's emissions trend 'alarming and shocking, with actions reset required' Opens in new window ] In effect, the researchers say, it requires modest reductions in methane from high-emitting countries, and denying methane emission 'rights' to countries producing less of the gas. As methane emissions are strongly linked with agricultural production, they say widespread adoption of temperature neutrality would lock in current inequalities in the global food system by reducing the need to curtail or offset methane emissions by current major livestock exporters. The study shows 'temperature neutrality severely restricts development space for agriculture in low-income, food-insecure countries where livestock products are most needed to improve nutrition'. The researchers evaluated scenarios to assess impact from the policy – first proposed in New Zealand – on global mean temperatures. Apart from 'business as usual', the temperature neutrality approach performed the worst in terms of global warming emissions. By 2050, Ireland's per capita methane emissions would remain almost six times the global average, it finds. Dr Duffy added: 'The science shows the new policy essentially grandfathers methane emissions – meaning a country's future share of warming is based not on equity or ambition, but on historical share of emissions. In essence; 'I had more, so I get more'.' UCC sustainable energy specialist Prof Hannah Daly said: 'Methane emissions are responsible for around 40 per cent of global warming ... [its] short lifetime in the atmosphere means that cutting its emissions is an essential lever to limit global warming to safe levels. 'For a country like Ireland, with outsized methane emissions, to base our long-term climate target on simply stabilising warming is inadequate to meet our global obligations and sets a dangerous precedent.' Dr Róisín Moriarty of UCC Sustainability Institute said: 'A 'no additional warming' approach to target-setting amounts to backsliding on a country's commitment to the Paris Agreement and is not a reflection of 'highest possible ambition'.'
