Two suspects arrested in connection with train heist of Nike shoes
Police arrested two suspects Thursday in connection with train heists that yielded Nike shoes in Arizona.
Over the last year, thieves have targeted freight trains traveling through the Mojave Desert in the southwestern U.S. Many of the heists have taken aim at millions of dollars of Nike sneakers, the Los Angeles Times first reported in February. Authorities are investigating at least 10 similar robberies.
The Hualapai Nation Police Department pulled over a maroon Chevy Tahoe at 2:40 a.m. on Thursday that was "suspected to be involved in train robberies in the area," the agency said in a post on Facebook. It was not clear how police connected the vehicle to the robberies.
Officers detained the driver, a man from Mexico, as eight people fled the car while it was stopped, police said. Officers found the stolen Nike shoes nearby.
Police said in the same post they made another arrest during the investigation: A woman driving a white Toyota 4Runner that was stopped for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.
When officers approached the car, they "observed evidence of criminal activity" that police said was also related to the train robberies. It was not clear what criminal activity was observed or how officials connected it to the robberies.
Officers asked the driver to get out of her car, which she did at first, before getting back into the car and driving away from the scene, police said. During her attempt to flee, she hit a patrol officer, who did not receive any injuries.
Police chased the suspect for approximately 80 miles before the woman's car lost control in a construction zone near the Arizona-California state line, hit a guard rail and ejected the driver. She had minor injuries and was taken to the Valley View Medical Center in Mohave Valley, Arizona, for treatment, police said in the statement.
Both of the suspects were booked in the Mohave County Adult Detention Center for their involvement in the train robberies case. Police also said both suspects were in the U.S. illegally.

New image emerges of Glasgow man missing in Portugal
Greg Monks went missing after leaving the main strip in Albufeira in the Algarve region after a night out between the evening of May 27 and the early hours of May 28. Alison Fraser, Greg's cousin, has now posted a picture taken of the 38-year-old before his disappearance. It reads: 'I'm Greg's cousin and I'm here in Albufeira, this is the last official sighting of Greg at around 3.27am on Wednesday, May 28. 'He was walking by the villa circled and in the direction of the arrow. Please share, particularly to any local residents' groups.' 'We are desperately seeking Greg's safe return and need your help. There are professional search teams out looking for Greg, and the family have all flown out to try and help find him, but they don't know how long their stay will be. 'They are doing everything they can. Every donation, no matter the size, will make a difference in our efforts to bring Greg home. 'Thank you for your support and prayers.' Man arrested after teenager raped in Edinburgh
The 15-year-old was raped in a basement area on York Place, Edinburgh on Sunday, May 25. A 20-year-old man has been arrested following the rape of a teenager in Edinburgh. The 15-year-old girl was targetted by a man at a bus stop on Princes Street in the capital last Sunday shortly before 5am, before being led through the city on foot to York Place. She was then raped in a basement area on the street before the suspect left on foot towards Dublin Street. Police announced on Sunday that a 20-year-old man had been arrested in relation to the attack, while inquiries remain ongoing. It follows an appeal from Police Scotland for information over the Sunday, May 25 attack, in a bid to track down the rapist, who was white and spoke with a Scottish accent. Officers said he was wearing a balaclava and had blonde stubble and was wearing a black zipped hoody, khaki green trousers, and Nike trainers. At the time, Detective Inspector Mhairi Cooper from the Public Protection Unit in Edinburgh said: "This was a frightening incident for the girl and we have specialist officers supporting her and her family. "From extensive enquiries within Edinburgh City Centre, we know the suspect approached her on Princes Street and then led her onto South St David Street, around St Andrew Square, onto Queen Street, then to York Place. "Despite the early morning there was daylight in this busy commercial area. I am asking people who were within the area at the time and could have seen the suspect alone or with the victim, to come forward. " CCTV from the New Town area is being gathered and checked – I would ask anyone with private systems to check these and submit anything of relevance to us as soon as possible. "We continue to carry out door to door enquiries and I'd appeal to local residents and businesses in New Town who may have premises off street level to check any storage areas or lock ups and report any suspicious items or behaviour to us.' Last picture of Greg Monks emerges as search continues for Scot missing in Portugal
The 38-year-old was on a stag do with pals when he vanished. The last picture of Greg Monks has emerged, as searches to track down the missing Scot continue in the Portuguese holiday hotspot of Albufeira. The 38-year-old, of Cambuslang, near Glasgow, vanished from the Algarve on Tuesday evening, hours after he arrived in the sunshine destination with his friends. And the last picture taken of him before he vanished has now been shared online in a bid to help track him down. The picture was posted in a Facebook group set up to help the search. It shows that he was wearing navy Nike shorts and a t-shirt by the sports brand and gives loved ones and the authorities searching for him more to go on in the hunt to find him. It was thought there were no pictures of him on the night he disappeared, with his sister saying previously they did not know for sure what he had been wearing. The social media picture was shared over 800 times by people desperate for him to return to his friends and make contact with his loved ones again. Well wishes also flooded in, with people saying they were praying for him and the family that he is found safe and well, following CCTV sightings of him. Greg - who was on a stag do with pals, ahead of being an usher for one of his friends - sparked a major search when he disappeared after leaving the popular bustling strip to head back to the group's apartments. However no one has seen or heard from him since and his worried parents and other loved ones currently out in Albufeira desperately seeking answers to his whereabouts. Portuguese search cops have told relatives he was last sighted on CCTV around four miles from his apartment and the strip in a quieter residential area of Cerro de Águia. Sister Jillian Monks says the exhausted search-party, including Greg's mum, dad, cousin and girlfriend Nicole, are numb as they scour the Algarve. Jillian, 36, who has had to remain in Glasgow with her two young children says she is doing everything she can to share appeals and reach out to locals on social media. Speaking with the Record, she said: "This is every family's worst nightmare. We have never known pain like this. It is just horrendous. We are all trying to keep positive but we know how out of character this is for Greg. "We know if he could contact us he would. We're all just numb and we're praying he's safe. We are all worried sick for him." Jillian has told how the stag party quickly got changed after checking into the Novochoro Apartments. They then headed out, and are believed to have been in King's Cross karaoke bar in Albufeira's nightlife hub before Greg became separated from the group. Jillian said: "His girlfriend, Nicole, is over in Albufeira, she checked through his case to see what was missing. We think he might have had a navy blue Nike shorts and top set on. "She's absolutely devastated right now, she just wants him back." Jillian says gutted mates were left "devastated and shocked" when they realised that Greg hadn't returned to the apartments. They immediately contacted police after he was missing for 12 hours. She said: "The group had only been there for a matter of hours. They checked in and were only in the apartment for 20 minutes before heading out again. "They are all devastated and shocked by what has happened. They spent the rest of the time there searching for him and trying to help. They have all returned home today, Greg should be back home with them." Jillian says the family are in constant contact with local police who have altered the national police force in Portugal. But she says the family have yet to see proof that Greg was spotted in Cerro de Águia and are asking police to show them the CCTV clips.
