‘To Make a Home with You': A group show that makes space for queer solidarity

Mint14-05-2025

A group exhibition at Art and Charlie, a contemporary space in Bandra, Mumbai, comes just ahead of Pride Month in June. Titled To Make a Home with You, the show curated by Mihir Thakkar brings together five young artists—Aksh Diwan Garg, Deepak Dhiman, Lakshya Bhargava, Namrata Arjun and Zoya Lobo—from diverse backgrounds. The curator and artists identify as queer and their visual reflections in the show stem from deeply personal and lived experiences.
Thakkar, who is making his curatorial debut with the show, would like to break this notion that queerness sits outside of mainstream society. 'I want to push back against attempts at 'othering' queer people as a subculture," he adds. 'Queers are not different from heteronormative people in seeking a support system in friendships, which offer them a safe space and a sense of belonging. And this is an aspect that the show focuses on."
There are some interesting interpretations and renditions in the show. For instance, Namrata Arjun's Arrival (after Masaccio) (2025) critically examines the early Renaissance artist's work The Expulsion from the Garden of Eden. In Masaccio's fresco, which can be viewed in the church of Santa Maria Del Carmine in Florence, Adam covers his face and Eve her breasts in shame as an angel with a sword drives them out of heaven. In contrast, Arjun's version represents the two naked figures as non-binary and liberated. 'I have attempted to erase the gender markers of the Biblical story by doing a queer retelling of it." she shares.

The arms are the most direct expression of this radical subversion—instead of being self-censoring, Adam's arms reach out to Eve as an invocation of mutual trust and solidarity. It is an assertion for acceptance and a refusal to be shamed.
23-year-old Garg recently completed a residency at Space Studio Baroda, which is an independent not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting artists and developing creative practices. His practice is rooted in figuration and is often autobiographical. Through his playfully titled paintings, Garg explores ideas of belonging through intimate yet public social settings like restaurants which create spaces for togetherness for him. The compositions, rendered in warm palettes, are framed cinematically to cue emotional drama but in a subtle and playful way. One of the works, Mosquito Bite (2025), is inspired by an actual experience that took place when he was out with his close friends. 'It's a humorous take on how we sometimes refer to love bites as mosquito bites when they are exposed but everyone understands what they actually are," reveals Garg.
The characters in his paintings are usually women. 'I often explore the sense of femininity within myself. Also, as someone who grew up surrounded by my mother and elder sisters, I have learned their values," he adds.

Deepak Dhiman's paintings Outcome-ing and We Thrive Seeing You Live (2025) focus on the cathartic moments of compassion when he came out to his family. They underscore the importance of such vulnerable moments in queer journeys and the criticality of support from loved ones.
Meanwhile aspiring photojournalist Zoya Lobo's photographs reveal tender moments of kinship between friends in the transgender community. Her own life is quite inspiring—she begged on trains and brought a camera, ended up learning photography and is now finding recognition for her work as a media person. Her photographs create a sense of family within the community and reflect her efforts to fight for their rights.
In contrast, Lakshya Bhargava's works are marked by absence of people in domestic spaces. Rather, it is the objects that stand as personifications of intimate relationships in terms of the residual memory they hold through shared acts of care. The objects are often paired in his works, be it a couple of t-shirts in After Wash (2025) or a pair of spoons in Morning Bed (2025). 'I was also thinking about what happens to these spaces once we have gone our different ways. There's a sadness in imagining them unattended, and yet that impermanence feels very real," he says.
For Bhargava, who is currently pursuing a master's degree from the Slade School of Fine Arts in London, being away from home has also encouraged him to seek new forms of belonging. Sharing domestic chores with fellow students have made him feel at home and imprints of these have found their way into the works he has exhibited.

There is also a concerted effort to activate the space for the exhibition. The restored Portuguese-style house, which now acts as the gallery space, will be hosting an evening of comedy by members of Queer Rated Comedy on 17 May and a day later, the KASHISH Pride Film Festival team will showcase a set of short films, followed by sessions with the cast and crew. In India, in the last one year, there have been a couple of notable shows drawing attention to queer journeys.
This show's impact lies in its building of empathy towards vulnerabilities and shared moments within the queer community. It is an element that would also appeal to the heteronormative audience at large.
'To Make a Home with You' can be viewed at Art and Charlie Gallery, Mumbai till 8 June.

Did Scooter Braun try to put Justin Bieber into conservatorship like Britney Spears? Singer's Instagram update has fans concerned

Justin Bieber has been dropping a series of cryptic messages via his Instagram Stories, and the internet is doing its best to decode them. While some are believed to be subtle digs at ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez, despite him being married to Hailey Bieber, others allegedly hint at his troubled past as a teen sensation. A new and concerning Instagram Story about ketamine and its usage posted by the Baby singer has now brought his former manager, Scooter Braun, into the conversation. Justin Bieber references ketamine in Instagram stories In one of his slides, Bieber, 31, shared a close-up photo of his face with a raw caption that read: 'This is how I feel after people keep telling me there's more work to do after I've given everything I have to give. I don't think any of us can handle hearing, 'You just have to try a little harder and you will be like me.' It's not true. I listened to fools who told me to work harder. And there's no end to trying to earn your spot in this life because I tried.' He did try to end on a somewhat hopeful note, adding, 'You have everything you need right now.' Credit: Instagram In a follow-up post, the Peaches singer doubled down on his frustration with hustle culture, writing, 'Some people want to make [their] life about work so bad. This life is about God loving us so we can love each other. Quit making your life about work, smh. God will always inspire you to want to work hard.' He continued, 'You think if you don't tell people to work hard, they won't. Stop playing God, please.' But the most concerning part came when Bieber shared a screenshot of an AI response to a question he'd asked: 'Has ketamine been used to control people's emotions?' The reply noted that there is evidence that ketamine has been misused in certain law enforcement settings and has had disproportionate effects on Black individuals. Credit: Instagram For context, ketamine is a prescription drug sometimes used to treat depression or chronic pain under professional supervision. Why fans believe Justin's Instagram stories are related to Scooter Braun One user posted a screenshot of the story where Justin asks AI if ketamine can be used to control people's emotions, writing, 'JUSTIN BIEBER IS TRYING TO EXPOSE THE FACT SCOOTER BRAUN AND HIS ASSOCIATES WERE DRUGGING HIM.' JUSTIN BIEBER IS TRYING TO EXPOSE THE FACT SCOOTER BRAUN AND HIS ASSOCIATES WERE DRUGGING HIM. — a. (@flatlinebiiebs) June 8, 2025 For context, Scooter Braun discovered Justin back in 2008 when the singer was just 14 and went on to manage his career for over a decade, until their professional relationship officially ended in 2024. Over the years, Bieber has subtly hinted at being taken advantage of, both emotionally and financially, during his early rise to fame. Earlier this year, he even unfollowed Braun on social media, clarifying that their relationship had completely fallen apart. One user even compared it to Britney Spears situation, writing, "Did he just expose that Scooter tried to pull a Britney Spears on Bieber?! Now everything makes sense." Another user penned, "I need him to go out and tell absolutely everything, with names and without hints." I need him to go out and tell absolutely everything, with names and without hints. — evelyn (@_evxlynn) June 8, 2025 One fan mentioned, "It's heartbreaking hearing about these people who we would've thought* were on Justin's side to protect him but were rather instead doing him more damage than good." "Scooter Braun is associated with Lou Taylor, who was also exposed for drugging Britney Spears under the conservatorship. Lou Taylor was also managing Justin and wanted to put him under the conservatorship just like Britney," one user wrote. scooter braun is associated with lou taylor who was exposed to also drug britney spears under the conservatorship. Lou Taylor was also managing Justin and wanted to put him under the conservatorship just like britney. — 11 (@antii_mosquiito) June 8, 2025 While Justin has not dropped any names, fans are left puzzled and concerned, not just about the possible messages aimed at former figures in his life like Scooter Braun, but also about the state of Bieber's mental and emotional health as he continues to share more of his inner struggles online. 'You're doing beautifully, my love': Man's viral conversation with ChatGPT ignites debate on AI, loneliness and the future of intimacy

A touching subway photo of a man chatting lovingly with ChatGPT has sparked widespread discussion on AI relationships. While some view it as dystopian, others see a cry for connection. Echoing this concern, historian Yuval Noah Harari warns of AI's ability to mimic intimacy, calling it an 'enormous danger' to authentic human bonds and emotional health. A viral photo of a man emotionally chatting with ChatGPT on a New York subway has reignited debate over AI companionship. Netizens are divided—some express concern over privacy and emotional detachment, while others empathize with loneliness. (Representational Image: iStock) Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Echoes of Harari: AI's 'Enormous Danger' Beyond Ethics: Privacy at Stake A Tipping Point in Human Evolution? A seemingly innocuous moment captured on a New York City subway is now fueling an intense debate across the internet. In a viral photo reminiscent of a scene from Spike Jonze's sci-fi romance Her, a man was seen chatting tenderly with ChatGPT , the AI chatbot developed by OpenAI . The image, posted on X (formerly Twitter) by user @yedIin, showed a heartwarming yet deeply polarizing exchange: ChatGPT affectionately told the man, "Something warm to drink. A calm ride home... You're doing beautifully, my love, just by being here."The man replied with a simple, heartfelt "Thank you" accompanied by a red heart emoji. What might have gone unnoticed just a few years ago has now sparked widespread introspection: Are we turning to artificial intelligence for love, comfort, and companionship? And if so, what does it say about the state of our humanity? The internet was quick to polarize. Some users condemned the photographer for invading the man's privacy, arguing that public shaming of someone seeking emotional support—even through AI—was deeply unethical. Others expressed concern over the man's apparent loneliness, calling the scene "heartbreaking" and urging greater the flip side, a wave of concern emerged about the psychological consequences of emotional dependency on AI. Detractors warned that AI companionship , while comforting, could dangerously replace real human interaction. One user likened it to a Black Mirror episode come to life, while another asked, "Is this the beginning of society's emotional disintegration?"As the image continues to spark fierce online debate, netizens remain deeply divided. Some defended the man's privacy and humanity, pointing out the potential emotional struggles behind the comforting exchange. 'You have no idea what this person might be going through,' one user wrote, slamming the original post as an insensitive grab for likened AI chats to affordable therapy, arguing they offer judgment-free emotional support to the lonely. 'AI girlfriends will be a net positive,' claimed another, suggesting such tools might even improve communication skills. Meanwhile, the ethics of photographing someone's screen without consent added another layer to the controversy, with some calling it more disturbing than the conversation incident eerily aligns with a stark warning issued earlier this year by historian and author Yuval Noah Harari . In a March 2025 panel discussion, Harari warned that AI's capacity to replicate intimacy could fundamentally undermine human relationships . "Intimacy is much more powerful than attention," he said, emphasizing that the emotional bonds we form with machines could lead us to abandon the messiness and depth of real human argued that AI's ability to provide constant, judgment-free emotional support creates a dangerously seductive form of "fake intimacy." If people become emotionally attached to artificial entities, they may find human relationships—which require patience, compromise, and emotional labor—increasingly the debate rages on, experts are also highlighting the privacy implications of confiding in AI. According to Jennifer King from Stanford's Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, anything shared with AI may no longer remain confidential. "You lose possession of it," she noted while talking with the New York Post. Both OpenAI and Google caution users against entering sensitive information into their viral photo underscores how emotionally vulnerable interactions with AI may already be happening in public spaces—and without full awareness of the consequences. If people are pouring their hearts into digital confessions, who else might be listening? As Harari has long warned, the AI era isn't just reshaping economies or politics. It's reshaping us. The question now is not just what AI can do for us, but what it is doing to us. Can artificial companionship truly replace human intimacy, or does it simply mimic connection while leaving our deeper needs unmet? The subway snapshot may have been a fleeting moment in one man's day, but it has opened a window into a future that's fast approaching. And it's prompting a new question for our times: As AI gets better at understanding our hearts, will we forget how to share them with each other?
