IT cos set to hire more freshers during FY26

Hans India05-05-2025
Bengaluru: Indian IT services companies are likely to hire higher number of freshers in FY26 as compared to last fiscal despite macroeconomic uncertainty induced by reciprocal tariff imposed by the US.
Industry experts are of the opinion that such uptick is driven more by low hiring in past years than any significant uptick in the demand environment. They also said that offer letters given to the freshers during campus placement should be turned into appointment letters in a specified time frame.
'What has happened that hiring of freshers has seen an uptick because of low hiring in last two years. We also know that giving an offer and converting that into appointment letter are two different things. The situation is very dynamic because clients of IT firms are giving mandate for short-term projects. When long-term projects fall, it directly affects fresher hiring,' said Aditya Narayan Mishra, CEO of CIEL HR Services.
'Fresher hiring usually happens taking into account the long-term deal pipeline of an IT firm. It is basically about getting the supply right considering the future. They don't bring revenue immediately,' he added.
Last month, management of big and mid-tier IT services companies has indicated that hiring of freshers will continue in FY26 amid an uncertain demand environment.
India's largest IT firm, TCS has said that it would hire more number of freshers than it recruited last year. The company hired around 42,000 fresh engineering graduates last fiscal.
'We will hire slightly higher number of freshers (from campuses) in FY26 as compared toFY25. The hiring number each quarter will depend on the demand environment,' said Milind Lakkad, Chief HR Officer, TCS.
Similarly, Infosys is planning to hire more than 20,000 freshers in FY26, while HCLTech is expected to hire around 10,000 engineering graduates from campuses in the current financial year.
Among mid-tier firm, L&T Technology Services will recruit around 2,500 freshers in FY26.
While many firms have given fresher hiring target for ongoing fiscal, some have not done so on the back of uncertain demand environment. Companies like Wipro, Tech Mahindra have said that they would hire freshers as per the demand environment.
Meanwhile, experts opined that undue delay in giving appointment dates should be avoided by all IT firms. Recently, companies like Infosys had fired freshers undergoing training saying that these interns were not able to clear various stages of the training programme. 'Freshers are expected to be good in new technologies because companies have increased the benchmark for final absorption,' said an industry source.

Indian Largecap IT stocks: A relative safe haven amid market volatility?

Indian largecap IT stocks, once trading at premium valuations, have seen a sharp derating amid a sectoral slowdown, persistent negative news flow, and an uncertain global demand outlook. Industry bellwether Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has seen its trailing twelve-month price-to-earnings (PE) ratio fall from 41x to around 20x, even as its profit CAGR stood at 8.5% and stock CAGR at about 6% over the past five years. While the Nifty IT Total Return Index (TRI) and sectoral earnings per share (EPS) have compounded at roughly 12.5% annually over the past two decades, the index has lagged the broader Nifty over the last three to five years. Analysts at DSP Mutual Fund note that IT's weight in the Nifty is now hovering near decade lows, but the sector's fundamentals remain robust, with top-tier companies continuing to deliver return on invested capital (ROIC) above 40%. This could set the stage for relative outperformance if valuations correct further. However, this positioning is more about relative safety than absolute return potential. Market strategists at DSP MF suggest that in the current volatile environment, a defensive portfolio comprising largecap IT, banks, and select other blue-chip stocks could help investors weather short-term turbulence while preserving capital. "With IT's weight in the Nifty near decade lows, and leading firms still generating ROICs above 40%, the sector may offer relative outperformance if valuations fall further. This doesn't signal that these stocks can deliver absolute returns, but when compared to the rest of the market, this may act as a relatively better investment avenue. The defensive bucket of IT, Banks and a few other largecap stocks can be used to tide over the market volatility," said Sahil Kapoor, Market Strategist and Head of Products at DSP Mutual Fund. This cost leadership translates into superior margins versus peers. With a strong revenue CAGR of 37% in FY23–25, Regaal is set to double capacity from 750 TPD to 1,650 TPD, diversify into high-margin modified starches, maltodextrin, and liquid glucose, and reduce high-cost debt using IPO proceeds. Government incentives, such as a 100% interest subsidy and SGST exemption, further enhance profitability. Risks include current high leverage (Debt-Equity ~2.1x) and dependence on maize, which is exposed to commodity and weather risks. Given its location advantage, expansion plans, and margin-accretive product mix, we recommend subscribing for the Long Term." Anand Rathi has also assigned a 'subscribe' tag to the public issue, saying, "On the valuation front, based on annualised FY25 earnings, the company is seeking a P/E of 21.9 times, and a post-issue market capitalisation of approximately ₹ 10,477 million, making the issue appear fully priced. We believe it has a capital-intensive nature of operations, exposure to Agri cycles, and limited pricing power in a commoditised market. However, its strategic location, diversified customer base, and expanding footprint support long-term scalability. Thus, we assign SUBSCRIBE for LONG TERM rating for this issue." In addition to these brokerages, Arihant Capital Markets, BNK Securities, BP Equities, Canara Bank Securities, Reliance Securities, SMIF, Swastika Investmart, and Venture Securities have also assigned a 'subscribe' tag to Regaal Resources IPO. 'It is estimated that around 55 per cent of the total value of India's merchandise exports to the US will be subject to this reciprocal tariff,' Chaudhary said.
