Donald Trump, Elon Musk In A Fierce Fighting Match Over Tax Bill And EV Credits: Who Said What
Last Updated:
US President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk engaged in a fierce public spat after the Tesla boss criticised his "big and beautiful" $4 trillion tax bill.
US President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk engaged in a public spat over the White House's $4 trillion spending and tax bill, with Trump expressing disappointment with Musk's criticism of the legislation and the Tesla boss accusing the US president of 'ingratitude".
The feud between once-close allies began over Trump's 'big, beautiful bill", which Musk called a 'disgusting abomination", sparking a rift between the two high-profile figures. As Musk's criticism grew, Trump made his frustration apparent today.
The public spat came days after his abrupt exit from the administration, following a 129-day stint leading a cost-cutting initiative through his advisory group, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), after failing to achieve his goals. Trump has expressed uncertainty about his bond with Musk, signalling a possible end to the bromance.
Who Said What?
'Disgusting Abomination'
The controversy began on Tuesday, when Musk sharply criticised the One Big Beautiful Bill Act for the first time, calling it a 'disgusting abomination". 'I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it," he said.
However, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president was unfazed by Musk's criticism. 'It doesn't change the opinion of President Trump. The president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill. It doesn't change the President's opinion," she said.
'KILL THE BILL'
The Tesla and X CEO unleashed another assault on the legislation, urging Americans to lobby Congress to 'KILL the BILL". In a post on X, Musk stated, 'Call your Senator, Call your Congressman, Bankrupting America is NOT ok! KILL the BILL."

In another post, Musk said, 'This spending bill contains the largest increase in the debt ceiling in US history! It is the Debt Slavery Bill."
'I'm Very Disappointed'
Donald Trump made his first public remarks over Musk's repeated criticism of the tax package, saying he was 'very disappointed" and did not know if his friendship with the billionaire former advisor would survive.
'I'm very disappointed because Elon knew the inner workings of this bill better than almost anybody sitting here. He had no problem with it. All of a sudden he had a problem and he only developed the problem when he found out that we're going to cut EV mandate, because that's billions and billions of dollars and it really is unfair," Trump said in the White House.
Trump said he could understand why Musk was upset with some steps he had taken, including withdrawing a nominee to lead the NASA, whom Musk had backed.
'Whatever'
Firing back at Trump's remarks over EV mandate, Musk said, 'Whatever. Keep the EV/solar incentive cuts in the bill, even though no oil & gas subsidies are touched (very unfair!!), but ditch the MOUNTAIN of DISGUSTING PORK in the bill."

'In the entire history of civilization, there has never been legislation that both big and beautiful. Everyone knows this! Either you get a big and ugly bill or a slim and beautiful bill."
Musk also rejected Trump's claims that he was informed about the One Big Beautiful Bill in advance. 'False, this bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!" he said.
'Such Ingratitude'
The feud escalated when Trump said he had helped Musk a lot and would have won the Pennsylvania election without the billionaire's help. Trump also remarked that Elon Musk missed being in the Oval Office, saying that some people become hostile after leaving his administration.

In Pakistan, You Get Rewarded For Promoting Terrorism: Shashi Tharoor
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has sharply criticised Pakistan for its treatment of Dr. Shakil Afridi, the physician who helped the US locate and eliminate Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, responding to a post by US Congressman Brad Sherman who urged a visiting Pakistani delegation to press for Dr. Afridi's release. Taking to social media platform X, Sherman wrote, 'I urged the Pakistani delegation to relay to their government the need to free Dr. Shakil Afridi, who continues to languish in prison for helping the United States kill Osama Bin Laden. Freeing Dr. Afridi represents an important step in bringing closure for victims of 9/11.' Reacting to the statement, Tharoor, who is currently leading an All-Party Parliamentary Delegation from India to the US, said: 'A welcome reminder by Rep. @BradSherman that Pakistan is the country that not only sheltered terrorist mastermind Osama Bin Laden (in a safe house near an army camp in a cantonment city!) but also arrested and punished the brave doctor who identified his location for the Americans. In Pakistan you are rewarded for promoting terrorism and persecuted for exposing terrorists!' Dr Shakil Afridi is a Pakistani doctor who helped the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the hunt for al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden. Afridi served as the senior health official of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. In 2008, he was abducted by Mangal Bagh, a bus driver turned commander of a Pakistani militant group, Lashkar-e-Islam. The Indian delegation in the US also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his statue opposite the Indian Embassy in Washington, continuing a tradition observed in all the countries visited. 'Once again, as in all the countries the delegation visited, we were able to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his statue opposite the Embassy in Washington DC,' Tharoor posted. He further noted, 'It is striking how many world capitals are adorned with statues or busts of the Mahatma, the 20th century's greatest apostle of peace, nonviolence, and human freedom.' Earlier, the delegation held a significant meeting with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. The Indian Embassy in Washington shared the update on the social media platform X, stating: 'The All Party Parliamentary delegation led by Dr. @ShashiTharoor had a warm and candid conversation with US Deputy Secretary of State @DeputySecState today. The Indian Delegation briefed him on the atrocities of the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor,' the embassy posted. Earlier on Thursday, the Delegation had an "excellent meeting" with United States Vice President J.D. Vance in Washington, briefing him about Operation Sindoor, terrorism faced by India, and regional security.

Pussy Riot co-founder back in prison cell -- at LA museum
Nadya Tolokonnikova, the co-founder of the feminist art collective Pussy Riot, is back in a prison cell but this time, she has gone willingly. At the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Russian activist is staging "Police State" a two-week piece of performance art aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of authoritarianism and oppression. Tolokonnikova who spent nearly two years in a Russian penal colony for performing a protest song against Vladimir Putin in a Moscow church in 2012 knows a bit about the topic. Through the installation, which opened Thursday and runs through June 14, she says she hopes to teach visitors about what she believes to be the advent of a new means of control technology. While she is in the mock cell, during all museum opening hours, she will eat, use the toilet, sew clothes as she once did in her real cell and create "soundscapes." Visitors can observe her through holes in the cell or on security camera footage. "People don't treat authoritarianism seriously," Tolokonnikova told AFP. Seated in a makeshift Russian prison cell, wearing a green tracksuit, the 35-year-old activist says in several countries, the concept of a "police state" is expanding. "As someone who lived under authoritarian rule for over 25 years, I know how real it is and how it starts, step by step, on the arrest of one person. You think, 'Well, it's not about me'," she explained. "And then next thing we know, the entire country is under the military boot." For Tolokonnikova, Donald Trump's return to the White House in January has sparked an "erosion of the system of checks and balances," which she deemed "very dangerous." She says the artistic community, and society in general, should do more to counter governmental abuses of power, wherever they may occur, and stop "outsourcing politics and political action." "I feel like it's as if there is someone else who's going to save us from everything. That's not what works really. We all have to contribute." Some who visited the installation said they agreed with Tolokonnikova that society had become too passive. "I feel like Americans don't want to believe that we could be in danger of losing our freedoms," said Jimmie Akin, a graphic designer who said she was worried about the policy changes since Trump took office. "People need to wake up." For 29-year-old Hannah Tyler, "Police State" was a bit of a shock to the system. "We're living in a country where we aren't facing the same extreme oppression that she did in Russia, but getting close to it. I felt inspired to take more action than I have been," Tyler said. Tolokonnikova's installation has some symbolic features. She has books and artworks made by Russian, US and Belarusian prisoners, as well as a drawing by late Russian dissident Alexei Navalny. A sewing machine recalls the manual labor of her incarceration. Words of protest are carved into the walls. For Alex Sloane, the museum's associate curator, the installation shows how "increased surveillance and government overreach" are becoming more and more widespread, and "freedoms are at risk." "We should do all that we can to make sure" that such circumstances are kept at bay, Sloane said. pr/bdx/sst/nl

Trump vs Musk: Donald Trump announces end of friendship with SpaceX CEO, warns of serious… Trump vs Musk: In the latest development in the 'fight of titans', where the world's richest man is fighting with the most powerful man on the globe, with the GOP's sweeping budget bill at the centre, United States President Donald Trump on Saturday stated that SpaceX CEO Elon Musk would face 'serious consequences' if he considered supporting Democratic Party candidates by funding them to run against Republicans. 'If he does, he'll have to pay the consequences for that,' NBC News quoted Trump as saying. However, the US President didn't reveal what those consequences would be. New Twist In Musk And Trump Fight Trum and Musk's friendship deteriorated after the richest man in the world departed from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which aimed at reducing the government's expenses. DOGE had made noticeable progress in reducing governmental spending until Musk broke ties with the Trump administration and started openly criticising him on social media platforms. Friendship 'Over'? As per NBC, President Trump clearly said that he has no desire to fix his deteriorating relationship with Musk after their feud became public for a week. Responding to whether his friendship with SpaceX CEO is over, he responded 'I would assume so, yeah.' Don't Wanna Speak President Trump stated he has no immediate plans to speak with Elon Musk, citing a busy schedule and Musk's alleged disrespectful conduct towards the presidency. 'I think it's a very bad thing, because he's very disrespectful. You could not disrespect the office of the President,' NBC quoted the US President as saying. On Thursday, Trump voiced his frustration with Musk's opposition to his proposed 'big, beautiful bill', noting Musk's prior familiarity with the bill's details. 'I'm very disappointed because Elon knew the inner workings of this bill. I'm very disappointed in Elon. I've helped Elon a lot,' President Trump said.
